Flag of South Africa Background:
After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics.
The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants.
The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races.
The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

You are looking for hotels in Africa, one of our top-level locations. To help you find a hotel, we have divided Africa into 50 countries - from Algeria to Zimbabwe. To find your hotel, just click on one of the text links above or use the pull down menu, above right. As you focus in on the location you get nearer to the hotel listings. Optionally, there is a clickable map of Africa, accessible from the drop down menu, above and to the right - just click the button. Concerning the links on this page: it's your choice whether you use the plain text links (above), the regions menu, the map menu or the quick search. Employ whichever method is best for you - they all lead to the same hotel information. Note that, unfortunately, not all locations have a map (this one does).
Africa Washed by the warm Mediterranean Sea to the north and swept by Antarctic winds at its southern tip, Africa is a continent with many faces. North of the Sahara the climate is hot and dry, the greenery confined to river banks and oases, and the culture is mainly Arabic with French influence still remaining.

GOVERNMENT AND POLITICAL CONDITIONS
The Lesotho Government is a modified form of constitutional monarchy. The Prime Minister, Pakalitha Mosisili, is head of government and has executive authority. The King serves a largely ceremonial function; he no longer possesses any executive authority and is proscribed from actively participating in political initiatives.
The Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) won the majority in parliament in the May 1998 elections, leaving the once-dominant Basotho National Party (BNP) and Basotholand Congress Party (BCP) far behind in total votes. Although international observers as well as a regional commission declared the elections to have reflected the will of the people, many members of the opposition have accused the LCD of electoral fraud. The 1998 elections were the third multiparty elections in Lesotho's history. The LCD, BNP, and BCP remain the principal rival political organizations in Lesotho. Distinctions and differences in political orientation between the major parties have blurred in recent years.
The constitution provides for an independent judicial system. The judiciary is made up of the High Court, the Court of Appeal, magistrate's courts, and traditional courts that exist predominately in rural areas. There is no trial by jury; rather, judges make rulings alone, or, in the case of criminal trials, with two other judges as observers. The constitution also protects basic civil liberties, including freedom of speech, association, and the press; freedom of peaceful assembly; and freedom of religion.

Maseru Members of the ruling Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) vented their anger on the motion proposed by a PR member of Parliament, and leader of the Popular Front for Democracy (PFD), Lekhetho Rakuoane that members of the house declare and register their assets and sources of income with the clerk. Rakuoane had also proposed that there be a select committee that would be designated 'the committee of ethics and code of conduct' and have powers to investigate all complaints of alleged breaches by failure to disclose assets, gifts and sources of income and corrupt practices of power abuse that would bring the house into disrepute, also calling for those members who fail to declare to be taken to task or even get suspended from the House.

Thomas Mofolo Library
History
The library of the National University of Lesotho is named after a Mosotho author, Thomas Mofolo (1875?-1948). Mr. Mofolo's most noted work is "Chaka," a literary biography of the renowned Zulu chief. The history of the Library is closely associated with that of the University, which was initially founded as the Pius XII College, in April, 1945 ( see history of NUL below ). Since then the Library has gone through a lot of changes and developments. Its present building was built with funds provided by the World Council of Churches and the World University Services and was officially opened on 1st April, 1966.
Mission
The library mission statement (quoted from the Library Plan, which has just been prepared by the University Librarian) is as follows: As the principal information resource for the University community of staff, students and researchers, the Thomas Mofolo Library provides a dynamic information service to its clientele in order to give practical meaning to the University's purpose as a centre of excellence in learning, teaching and research.
