Imagegallery In 1905 , during the excavation for the construction of the most prestigious hotel of the island, the Quisisana, was founded a layer of red clay which returned primitivestone weapons and several bones of huge animals.Ignazio Cerio, one of the three brothers "numi tutelari" of the island, immediately inquired the scientific word about the discovering, and was ascertained the bones had belonged to mammoths, (elephas primigenius), rhinos, stags, and other animals, and that the weapons dated back to the Quaternary Age. That discovering put a question at once: how had had been possible that those animals should had reached Capri in so far times? What used to be only an hypothesis, actually we know for certain: Capri is tied to Sorrento by a submarine branch which is about 5 Km. long, and this branch once was above sea level.Other primitive remains were founded toward the south, coast of the island, into a cavern, (the Ferns Grotto), which is 150 metres high. Many students who, starting from Cerio, studied the cavern, founded a lot of Palaeolithic tools and marks of tombs. The Ferns Grotto is situated in the stone face of the Solaro, and in the past it could be reached by sea rather easly, (but, actually, the path is broken down), and it was also an excellent refuge for the primitive people.Despite the fact that the population was rather diffused on the island, a real colonization started only by Greeks, infact the etymology of Capri derives just from Greek.Since then, the island was divided in two lived zones, tied with difficulty by a long stairway called Phoenician owing to a wrong attribution.

But those who agree that we live in apocalyptic times of war and loneliness will find much here on which to pray. - James J. Buckley The Battle for Christmas . By Stephen Nissenbaum. Knopf. 381 pp. $30. Not much escapes the scrutiny of this University of Massachusetts history professor. From the origins of the interior Christmas tree (no, the Hessians did not bring it to America from Germany during the Revolutionary War) to the message of Clement Moore's poem, "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (yes, there is meaning behind St. Nick's placing his finger "aside of his nose") to an intriguing interpretation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol , Nissenbaum shows how in the nineteenth century there emerged the tradition that is now, more or less, our way of observing Christmas. Concentrating largely on America, he examines in minute detail the transformation of Christmas from a rather unruly winter carnival to a quiet, domestic, and child-centered event. At times the detail can be numbing, but Nissenbaum keeps the narrative flowing with a minimum of academic vocabulary. Though the epilogue indulges an odd thesis about acceptance of Santa Claus and Christmas trees serving to protect nineteenth-century children from grasping the connection between family life and the commercial economy, the book remains a good reference volume for all those who enjoy learning how we came to do the things we do.

of Religious Belief Chinese citizens' right to the freedom of religious belief is protected by the Constitution and laws. The Chinese government has promulgated the Regulations on the Administration of Sites for Religious Activities so as to protect the lawful rights and interests of such sites. The Regulations specify: Sites for religious activities shall be run independently by the administrative organizations thereof, whose lawful rights and interests and normal religious activities at the sites shall be protected by law. No organization or individual may violate or interfere with such rights, interests or activities. Anyone who encroaches on the lawful rights and interests of the sites for religious activities shall bear legal responsibilities. Religious activities conducted at the sites, however, must conform to laws and regulations. Each country has its own history, culture and national conditions, which decide that each country's protection of freedom of religious belief has its own characteristics. While stressing the protection of freedom of religious belief China pays equal attention to the protection of the freedom not to believe in religion, thus ensuring freedom of religious belief in a complete sense. This is a more complete and more comprehensive protection of citizens' basic rights.

1,300 Mexican Soldiers Marching on San Antonio
Failed to Stop Ball Honoring Davy Crockett.
San Antonio Express newspaper, February 21, 1937, Sunday. It was 1 o'clock the morning of Feb. 11, 1836, and the chivalry and beauty of San Antonio danced in honor of Mr. David Crockett who had come a month before. A galloper slid wearily from a fagged horse and knocked authoritatively at the door. He inquired for Colonel Erasmo Seguin. The colonel was not present. He ask for Antonio Menchaca. When that gentleman came forward the rider handed him a letter. James Bowie came up and read over his shoulder and Bowie called to a youthful lawyer, senior officer at San Antonio, William B. Travis. Col. Travis was dancing with the belle of the evening. He smiled at his partner and told Bowie he had no time for letters. But Bowie was insistent. Travis knew his man. Bowie was not a man given to excitement or to making mountains of mole hills. If Bowie said it was important in was probably important. Travis courtesied to his lovely partner and excused himself. With Crockett, he joined Bowie and Menchaca. Travis read the letter. It was from Placido Benavides at Camargo. Travis read: "At this moment I have received a very certain notice that the commander-in chief, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, marches for the City of San Antonio to take possession thereof, with 13,000 men."

Reunification of China Is Necessity of History: Commentary
Human history has entered the new century and the new millenium. How should the United States , the world's biggest developed country; and China, the world's largest developing country, make a correct positioning and choice in regard to the Taiwan issue, the most important and most sensitive core issue in Sino-US relations, not only affects the future of the two countries of China and the United Sates, but also has a bearing on the development of peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world as a whole, it has become a focus of the attention of the world people.
In the past few months, the repeated wrong actions in relation to the Taiwan issue taken by the US government in violation of the three Sino-US joint communiques have directly harmed China's national interests, constituting damage to the foundation of Sino-US relations.
The one-China principle is the foundation and prerequisite for peacefully solving the Taiwan issue. Any form of "Taiwan independence" is absolutely impermissible. Since the US government has clearly indicated that it will adhere to the one-China policy and will not support Taiwan independence, it should implement the one-China policy and abide by the three Sino-US joint communiques and its related commitments. Only by doing so will it be possible for the Taiwan issue to be properly solved and the Sino-US relations be effectively improved and developed.

BRITAIN: A SHORT HISTORY T.A. Jenkins Chapter 1: The Making of Great Britain (Extract) Introduction The Kingdom of England However, the Reformation was not a single event occurring in the 1530s. Following the premature death of Henry's only son, Edward VI (reigned 1547-53), the throne passed to Mary I, the daughter from Henry's first marriage, who had been brought up as a strict Catholic. She proceeded to launch a counter-Reformation, restoring England's links with Rome, and during her brief reign some three hundred Protestants, one-third of them clergymen, were burned as heretics. This helped to engender a ferocious hatred of Catholicism in the English mind, which equated that religion with tyranny and persecution. On Mary's death in 1558 she was succeeded by her Protestant sister Elizabeth I, the child of Henry's second marriage, and it was through her religious settlement in 1559 that England's Protestant identity was definitively established. History - or, to be more accurate, mythology - is a vital tool for forging a national identity, and sixteenth-century England was notable for its people's eagerness to learn about their own past. There was a public appetite for books about English history, recent and distant, which were often given official encouragement, as in the case of John Camden's Annals of the Reign of Queen Elizabeth. One of the best-known works was the Chronicles of England, begun by Raphael Holinshed and completed in the 1580s by John Hooker and others. The Chronicles struck a patriotic and robustly Protestant tone, and provided source material for Elizabethan poets such as Edmund Spenser. Above all, they inspired the remarkable cycle of history plays by William Shakespeare who, in Richard II (1597), act II scene I, memorably expressed the proud insularity of an island nation:
