Description Clinics DENVER BAR ASSOCIATION PUBLIC LEGAL EDUCATION The Public Legal Education Department works with the Legal Services Committee to provide the community with information, education and assistance in the understanding and use of the legal process, to enhance public trust in the legal profession, to give direction and opportunities for members to participate in these efforts and to coordinate these efforts with other community organizations. The Director of Public Legal Education coordinates various programs to provide member attorneys opportunities to provide law-related education, improve communication and expand relationships in the community through voluntary service. The following educational programs are available. The clinics are generally held monthly and are open to the public. Attorney volunteers are offered CLE training for most of these clinics and are encouraged to volunteer for a program even if it is not within their specialty area. CLINICS BANKRUPTCY CLINICS Attorney volunteers teach bankruptcy for debtors only (not creditors). The volunteer attorneys give general overview information regarding bankruptcy and provide tips and helpful hints. These clinics are also held at selected Denver Community School locations and are open to the public. Participants must call Gove central reservations, (303) 399-6510, to reserve a spot in any clinic.

This initiative is designed to make judges, lawyers, crown attorneys and other justice system personnel more accessible to students, particularly at the secondary school level. Teachers can access speakers who will either come to the classroom, or will welcome students in visits to courthouses, simply by completing a Teacher Request Form . The Teacher Request Form is then faxed to a local courthouse administrator, who will ensure that a speaker - a judge, a lawyer, a crown attorney, a court administrator, or a legal aid representative - addresses the topic(s) of student interest. The speaker may be part of a visit to the courthouse, also available upon request, or will visit the classroom. This initiative is intended to enhance any previous contact you may have had with court and legal system personnel and is being implemented through local committees. The local committees have representatives of the speaker groups and teachers are encouraged to access these organizations. If you are interested in being a part of this initiative, please contact the program department of your Board of Education.

Indiana Courts: How do they work?
A curriculum unit for secondary school teachers This lesson plan is constructed to work with any resources a classroom teacher regularly uses in the course of teaching an American History, Government, or Indiana History class. In addition to the materials that a teacher might have at hand, some online suggestions are provided. A few general legal links are included at the bottom of the lesson to aid a teacher or student interested in further exploration of this or any other legal topic. A glossary of legal terms used in this and other Courts in the Classroom lesson plans is available on-line as well. Learning Objectives At the end of this lesson a student will be able to:
  • Identify the various branches of Indiana's judicial system Understand and discuss the difference between trial and appellate courts Understand and discuss the difference between a civil and a criminal case Determine what is the appropriate place within the judicial system for a given case to be heard

Ira C. Ritter and The Kroger Co. v. Jerry and Ruth Stanton Lesson 3: Oral Arguments Online
A lesson plan for secondary teachers on the constitutional protections of trial by jury* *The staff of the judicial branch chose this case as a useful tool to teach an interesting aspect of the law. Its selection has no bearing on how the case will ultimately be decided. Since the members of the Court did not participate in the preparation of the lesson plan, the issues raised in it will not necessarily be addressed in the oral argument. Background:
Teachers should ask their students to read the case summary and the briefs of the appellants (Ira C. Ritter and the Kroger Co.) and the appellees (Jerry and Ruth Stanton), and to watch the one-hour webcast of the November 14, 2001 oral argument before the Indiana Supreme Court for Ritter v. Stanton.
