Computers Teach Language and Culture
Languages and Linguistics Faculty Present Findings at Two Conferences
Edward Dixon This summer the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics (FLL) played a major role in two conferences designed to illustrate the use of technology in teaching language and culture. Complete descriptions of these and other conferences pertinent to language and linguistics instruction using technology are described at Japanese Pedagogy
The Ninth Virginia Japanese Pedagogy Workshop was organized and hosted by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Georgetown and ran from June 4 to 6. Over 70 K-12 and university professors from around the country, including Hawaii, attended the conference. The theme of the conference was “The Integration of Technology in Japanese Teaching.” The opening reception was held at the Embassy of Japan. The computer presentations and workshops were held at Georgetown. Presenters from public school systems and universities, including Georgetown, demonstrated new and stimulating ways of using technology and the Internet to teach Japanese language and culture to American students. Participants received hands-on experience developing multimedia lessons and Web pages with Kanji characters and digital video in Georgetown’s computer labs. Professor Yoshiko Mori chaired the Program Committee consisting of Professors Sachiko Hashimoto, Motoko Omori, Ikuko Muroga, Hisae Fujiwara, East Asian Languages and Cultures, and Ed Dixon from Research and Curriculum Development within UIS. Organizers were especially pleased to hear participants remark that they were impressed with Georgetown’s computer facilities and would like to return.

PLANNING A CAREER IN LANGUAGE TEACHING Getting Started Are you ready to start an MA or certificate program? Whether you are new to the field of language teaching, or an experienced language teacher professional contemplating further professional development, the Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics has programs to enhance your skills. But deciding among the varied array of degree and certificate programs offered in the language teaching field is not always easy. Clarifying your interests and career goals, will help you select the academic program best suited for you. Are you interested in a long-term career in language teaching? Think about where you would like to work - in terms of institutions and geography. Think about the student population you prefer children, teens, or adults. In addition to teaching, are you also interested in research and writing, administration, or other areas, such as testing or computer assisted language learning? Take that in to consideration when you are choosing a program and school. Spend some time studying job announcements (in publications, such as the Chronicle of Higher Education, or on line at websites such as Dave's ESL Café, TESOL Online or The Linguist List). This will give you a better idea of what qualifications and experience are needed for the kind of positions in which you're interested. Talking with individuals who are working in the field is also very helpful.
