Photographs: Simone Poirier-Bures On kumys and commodification. from Resurgence issue 215 back to top I am speaking of Kyrgyzstan, a small mountainous country deep in Central Asia, a country that for seventy-five years was part of the former Soviet Union. If you stop at one of the herders’ yurts (round tents made of felt), they will give you kumys in a small ceramic tea bowl. You can buy whole bottles of it, but the bowls they offer are always free. And never do they press you to buy. "It used to be, in the old days, kumys was never sold," our friend Zina says. "It is a sacred drink and was always given free of charge. But now, when things are so hard for the people, they sometimes take money." Things are hard, because after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and Kyrgyzstan became an independent republic, the entire economy went into a free fall. Now the people are struggling to find a viable way to live.
