Technical Articles: Programming Dynamic HTML in Java

With Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, Microsoft introduced its implementation of a revolutionary HTML object model that content providers can use to effectively manipulate HTML properties on the fly. Until now, this object model has primarily been accessed using script technology. The com.ms.wfc.html package of the Microsoft Windows® Foundation Classes for Java (WFC) framework now lets you access the power of Dynamic HTML (DHTML) on a Web page directly from a Java class.
Introduction to the com.ms.wfc.html Package
To help you get up and running using the com.ms.wfc.html package to implement Java and DHTML, here are the basic steps you can perform to create a simple DHTML project and add your own dynamic behavior to it. While this is by no means the entire story, it sets the stage for the rest of this topic and for the samples. There are five basic steps when using the com.ms.wfc.html package:
  • Create a new project by choosing New Project from the File menu and selecting Code-behind HTML from the Web Pages category.

    A Brief Introduction
Welcome to The Programming Resevoir! Thank you in advance for visiting my programming website. My name is Kurt Kruger and I am a *budding* 18 year old self-taught computer programmer from South Africa (now you understand why my code is so sloppy). This website will, in future, be dedicated to games and more specifically, 2D and 3D graphics programming - not that I know much about the latter. Since I have recently completed my matric final exams, I'll have plenty of time to improve upon this site, so watch this space for updates! To other matters...if there are any demo groups out there on the lookout for new memebers I would be very happy to join. Even if I don't get involved with any public coding, I am very eager to learn new techniques and tips. NOTE! This page is still under construction, so certain portions will not be navigable yet. I'm still trying to complete most of the progamming documents, but hopefully everything will be up and running within the week. Still, have a look at the downloads section; you might find something useful.

I'm adding a new section where I will be presenting pages for classic video games. I'm starting off by allowing 5 people to host video game pages on my server, this includes MANY benefits. I hope eventually to have 20+ game sites on my page hosting graphics movies etc.. on Final Fantasy 1-9, Zelda 1-6, and all the other truly classic games that are out there. Just to let you know, I don't believe in having 1 zelda page for all six zelda's, people spread themselves to thin when they do that, one page per one game. For more information please visit Here

I appreciate the time you take to do that, I realize that it's a lot to ask, but it'll help put back into this site. I'm ALMOST breaking even now :-) With the money from the Gator I'm going to buy new books that I will not only review, but learn so that I can publish tutorials based on the knowledge from those books. To the reader: constructive criticism and commentary is welcome! Introduction to Thoughtful Programming This is also the view of businesses in the increasingly information-driven economy of the United States. They believe that software should be developed and shipped as quickly as possible to make it to the market on time. If this involves cutting corners in terms of runtime speed, code complexity, size, system requirements, or bug testing, it is considered a sacrifice which can be remedied after the product ships. After all, the business has a bottom line, and if the code works, marketing is perfectly willing to sell it to people. Now, it is doubtful that many programmers, perhaps after some hard thought, would consider this kind of software beautiful. It is certainly suboptimal in many aspects already mentioned, there are certainly sections of code which could be rewritten or done away with, perhaps it was written in a scripting language when it should have been written in a lower level language, etc. And let's not forget the hundreds or thousands of bugs that still lie in the code because the deadline was hit. This is not the kind of code that a programmer would be proud to admit to writing. For years now, the computer industry, largely in marketing efforts, has given the average consumer the impression that computing technology is abundant and ubiquitous

  • All source code must have your name in it. This includes project files, header files, script files, etc. that pertain to a Programming Assignment.
  • Unless otherwise specified, any generated executables should have the name prog n , where n is the program number.
  • All projects must run correctly in the environment it was designed for (e.g. PC platform or Unix). Disk Submissions (for PC platform only)
    • All source code connected to a programming assignment will be submitted in either a 3.5" diskette or CD. Your name must also be clearly written on the disk label. (Large programs that will not fit in a diskette have to be submitted in a CD.)
    • Successfully completed Assignments should come with an executable file and anything necessary for the code to run (e.g help files and other text files, sample data, etc.). Your programs will still be recompiled during the evaluation process.

    Why Functional Programming Matters
    John Hughes
This paper dates from 1984, and circulated as a Chalmers memo for many years. Slightly revised versions appeared in 1989 and 1990 in the Computer Journal and the Year of Programming. This version is based on the original Chalmers memo nroff source, lightly edited for LaTeX and to bring it closer to the published versions. Please excuse the slightly old-fashioned type-setting, and the fact that the examples are not in Haskell!
    Abstract
As software becomes more and more complex, it is more and more important to structure it well. Well-structured software is easy to write, easy to debug, and provides a collection of modules that can be re-used to reduce future programming costs. Conventional languages place conceptual limits on the way problems can be modularised. Functional languages push those limits back. In this paper we show that two features of functional languages in particular, higher-order functions and lazy evaluation, can contribute greatly to modularity. As examples, we manipulate lists and trees, program several numerical algorithms, and implement the alpha-beta heuristic (an algorithm from Artificial Intelligence used in game-playing programs). Since modularity is the key to successful programming, functional languages are vitally important to the real world. The paper is available as postscript and pdf , and here is a bibtex entry. There is even a
