My exercises are the strictly mechanical manipulation type, which students find useful as a foundation before proceeding to more creative use of the language: e.g., things like tense changing, choosing the right mutation, gender agreement, preposition choice, etc. Not fascinating reading, but necessary practice, at least for those whose learning style is formally oriented..." History and Facts about the Irish Gaelic Language Introduction
Irish is a language spoken today by approximately 300,000 people (including myself)
mostly in Ireland but also scattered throughout the world. Irish, also known as Gaelic and
called Gaeilge by its speakers is the first official language of Ireland. The language has
become an important part of the identity of the Irish people since independence in 1922.
My purpose is to show the history, the geography, and the many other factors which have
affected this language.
Characteristics
Irish is a member of the Indo-European language family and is a Celtic language. The
other Celtic languages which are still alive are: Welsh, Scots Gaelic, and Breton. Like the
other Celtic languages, Irish has peculiarities which are found in just the Celtic languages and nowhere else in the Indo-European language group. One difference is that words in Irish can change in the front along with the end. Plurals, the genitive, and the dative (which is rarely used) cases are usually shown by endings. Words change at the front when they are after certain prepositions or expressions. The word cuid (part) with mo

This tribe was a hospitable group, placing much importance on family and friends - and widely known for their strength and valor in combat, and strong sense of culture in time of peace. Winning battle after battle, the Celts eventually conquered most of modern Europe; occupying lands from the Iberian peninsula in the west, to the Scottish highlands in the north, spanning Europe to the Black Sea in the East, and touching as far south as Central Italy.
During their history, the Celts gathered many names from the other tribes and cultures in Europe. The very word "Celt" comes from " Keltoi " (meaning "secret people"), which was the Ancient Greek name for the tribe. Regionally, the Celts who lived in the Iberian Peninsula were identified as

14. Beginner's Guide To Irish Gaelic Pronunciation
Simplified guide to pronouncing the irish language designed for people unfamiliar with the language.
http://www.standingstones.com/gaelpron.html
A Beginner's Guide to Irish Gaelic Pronunciation
I have put this guide together as a service to traditional musicians, radio announcers and anyone else who is interested in traditional Irish music, and would like to be able to pronounce tune titles, people's names and the like in Irish, but is not familiar with the language or the spelling system. This guide is not intended for linguists or people who are learning Irish as a language. It is simply a rule of thumb for people who are unfamiliar with Irish (e.g., most English-speaking people outside Ireland). As an example of what I mean, most English-speaking people in California or the U.S. Southwest, seeing the placename "San Joaquin", would pronounce it "San Wah-KEEN". This is not exactly the correct pronunciation in Spanish. You would, however, be understood a lot better by a Mexican than if you said "San JOE-a-Kwin", which is what applying English spelling rules to Spanish would give you. In our part of the world most people have a rough concept of the Spanish spelling system. If you are involved with Irish music, why not try to acquire a similar knowledge of Irish spelling? Never again need you feel uneasy when confronting words like bhfuil or Maedhbh Spoken Irish has three main dialects, Munster (Cork and Kerry), Connemara and Ulster (Donegal). This guide is more or less based on the Ulster dialect.

We strive to preserve the language and culture of Ireland, and feel that with hard work and dedication, those in Ireland and abroad can make a genuine step towards promoting the beautiful and vital culture against threats of standardization. Irish is a viable language that has adapted to the modern age; we feel that it is worth saving and perpetuating for generations to come. Because we wish to promote the language as well as the culture, we encourage people to take classes and use Irish whenever possible, and we facilitate learning groups and classes. However, the only pre-requisite for joining the Gaelic League is a love of the Celtic cultures and a desire to share in our common love of Celtic music, art, literature, history and language.
  • Meetings on the second Sunday of every month, where we can gather to have fun, learn something new about Celtic cultures and discuss League business.
  • Workshops, both formal and informal, on Irish language and history

Sociolinguistics of the current situation of Celtic languages, with particular attention paid to the gaelic tongues (irish, Manx, and Scottish gaelic).

This message was originally submitted as a three-part message to Celtic-L by Stiofan MacAmhalghaidh
Gaeilge - the language and the state
The Celtic peoples of Europe are presently represented by the population of six separate nations. These are Alba (Scotland), Breizh (Brittany), Cymru (Wales), Eire (Ireland), Kernow (Cornwall) and Mannin (Isle of Man). These six have a total combined population of about 17 million. Of these, a little over 2.5 million can speak a Celtic language, with approximately another 1.25 million speakers living outside the home nations. Each of the nations has its own separate language, all of which are currently living languages in the sense that there is in each case a group who can speak it fluently. Of these the least known and used is Cornish (c.200 fluent speakers). I have listed each nation and its respective language below: Nation Language
Alba Gaedhlig (Scots)
Breizh Breizoneg (Breton)
Cymru Cymraeg (Welsh)
Eire Gaeilge (Irish)
Kernow Kernewek (Cornish)
Mannin Ghaelg (Manx) In addition, there are the two existing Celtic Colonies in Nova Scotia, Canada (Scots) and Y Wladfa, Patagonia, Argentina (Welsh). The Nations themselves are divided into two groups of three, according to the type of Celtic tongue used - Gaelic and Britonnic. These are described below.
