Maps of the Byway
Geography of the Byway The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway travels through the rugged landscape of windblown silt deposits along the Missouri River Valley. The steep, sharply ridged topography supports many rare plants and animals, many of which can only be found in the Loess Hills. This guide to the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway help to take you through Iowa's Loess Hills, county by county through the seven counties where the hills are located. The Loess Hills are located in seven western Iowa counties, including (traveling from north to south): Plymouth, Woodbury, Monona, Harrison, Pottawattamie, Mills, and Fremont. Traveling the Byway The main part of the route, also called the spine, is on paved roads, ranging from two-lane county highways to state highways and four-laned interstates. On the maps, the spine is always marked in dark blue. Excursion loops, marked in green, are a mix of gravel and paved roads. A few words of caution for those who have not driven much on gravel roads: stay to the right when going up hills take curves slower than usual, allow extra time to stop and don't speed because gravel doesn’t offer the best traction

62. Description Of The Quad Cities Area
Subarea geography. The QC SACP comprises Scott County, iowa, and Rock Island County,Illinois, and the cities contained therein, including Davenport, Bettendorf
http://www.great-lakes.net/partners/epa/SACP/Description.html
Quad Cities Sub-area Contingency Plan III. Description of the Quad Cities Area Basis for Metropolitan Governance Approach The metropolitan areas were selected because in each case at least two large cities are separated by a major river, which is a shared resource, requiring joint stewardship and coordination among local municipalities, two states and in the case of the Quad Cities and St. Louis, two federal regions. Releases of oil or hazardous materials into the rivers may impact multiple jurisdictions and necessitate prompt notifications and coordinated responses. Sub-area Geography The QC SACP comprises Scott County, Iowa, and Rock Island County, Illinois, and the cities contained therein, including Davenport, Bettendorf, and Riverdale, Iowa, and Moline, East Moline, Rock Island, Milan, Silvis, Cordova, Port Byron and Rapid City, Illinois. The area extends along the Upper Mississippi River from river-mile 503 near Cordova, Illinois, downstream to river-mile 470 near Buffalo, Iowa. The combined population of the two counties is in excess of 400,000, with approximately 250,000 in Rock Island County and slightly more than 150,000 in Scott County. A map of the QC sub-area, which includes municipal boundaries and major highways, is included on Page 6. Sub-area Climate Rock Island and Scott counties are subject to substantial precipitation during the year, with from 25 to 35 inches falling as rain or snow. Winds during fall and winter are typically from the west and average 11 miles per hour, while spring and summer winds are from the south and average 8 miles per hour. Temperatures fluctuate from 40 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the spring and summer and from below to 40 degrees from November to March. The area is one of the few along the Mississippi River that does not have a levee system and parts of Moline and Davenport are susceptible to high waters originating from upstream precipitation.

Map the Mississippi Watershed PDF Instructions for students: Use the map template " The Mississippi River and Watershed " and other resources to complete the following. Use another sheet for your answers.
  • On the lower right corner of your map place an arrow that indicates which direction is north on the map. Put a capital "N" at the tip of the arrow. Add the letters S, E & W around the arrow to indicate the directions south, east and west.
  • Using a light green pencil, carefully outline the Mississippi Watershed on your map by following the dashed lines. Write "watershed boundary" neatly along this line.
  • Using a light blue pencil, carefully highlight the Mississippi River; neatly label it.
  • Where does the Mississippi River begin? Mark that place with a blue dot.
  • Place a red dot on your map where the Twin Cities are located.
  • Highlight the Minnesota River with a light yellow pencil, highlight the Missouri River with light brown, and the Ohio River in orange. Label each river.
  • Using other colors, neatly highlight at least two other rivers on the map that are tributaries to the Mississippi; label each river.

For Open-Space Locales By J OEL K OTKIN
F or much of the past twenty years, high-tech development has generally followed a predictable pattern: towards the periphery of major metropolitan areas. Starting with Route 128 near Boston and Silicon Valley, the fastest growing tech areas have been those close to certain urban centers. Yet, with the rise of the Internet and growing frustrations with life in the increasingly crowded Nerdistans, there has been a discernible movement of skilled professionals and their wealth- generating capacity to what may be called "leapfrog" tech poles. Increasingly influential environmental and "anti-growth" movements in places like the Route 101 Corridor, Orange County and Northeastern New Jersey may also play a role in shifting development further away. "Leapfrog" areas are defined as those that have substantial open space between themselves and any major metropolitan area. In some cases, they are areas that are a county or two outside the metropolitan fringe; in others, they can be hundreds of miles from any major metro area. Recent evidence in the last census, as well as technology surveys conducted by the Milken Institute, indicate that the high-tech revolution is beginning to move further out into these communities in the nation's hinterlands. In many ways, this parallels the 20th-century pattern of industrial growth which started in New England and the Middle Atlantic states and gradually shifted first to the less expensive, more centrally located Midwest and, later, to the states of the Old Confederacy. Today, although often very different in terms of their needs, the digital revolution may be about to follow a similar pattern out of its home base in the Nerdistans and "boutique cities" and into at least certain parts of the great American hinterlands.

Iowa - A State Unit Study This mini unit on IOWA uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study IOWA. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child's needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about IOWA and enjoyable for all who are participating. Iowa's State Flag Having three vertical stripes blue, white and red the Iowa flag resembles the flag of France. On the white stripe is a bald eagle carrying a blue streamer in its beak. The state motto " Our Liberties We Prize, and Our Rights We will Maintain" is written on the streamer. The name of the state is emblazoned in red letters. Flag adopted 1921. Create a State "Infodesk": Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect.

    Geography of Agriculture
Dateline: 02/23/98 Around ten to twelve thousand years ago, human began to domesticate plants and animals for food. Before this first agricultural revolution, people relied on hunting and gathering to obtain food supplies. While there are still groups of hunters and gatherers in the world, most societies have switched to agriculture. The beginnings of agriculture did not just occur in one place but appeared almost simultaneously around the world, possibly through trail and error with different plants and animals or by long term experimentation. Between the first agricultural revolution thousands of years ago and the 17th century, agriculture remained pretty much the same. In the seventeenth century, a second agricultural revolution took place which increased efficiency of production as well as distribution which allowed more people to move to the cities as the industrial revolution got under way. The 18th century's

You are to choose 2 cities from the list at the right and analyze the city's site and situation. You will need to look at a variety of maps(see below) and both zoom in and zoom out to look at the city's physical features (site morphology) and its relative location and hinterlands (situation). I have emphasized location, site and situation in class. You should know what they are by now, but just in case:
Site: This extends the location description to include the ground a town occupies. The physical features of the landscape favor the placement of towns. It also allows for classifying towns according to physical features: rivertowns, gateways, natural resources.
