Related Books and Items Recent studies indicated that the iguana iguana or known as the rainforest common green iguana is one of the few completely herbivorous (plant-eating) lizard in its natural habitat. Therefore, the information on iguana care and its food supply should be based on that aspect. It is important then, to consider physiology, environment and diet in order to keep an iguana in the picture of good health. Iguana management is dependent on the understanding of the digestive system of a pet. They are considered Hind-Gut fermenters which means the general well being is directed by the lower intestinal tract. The lower intestinal tract is responsible for vitamin production, fatty acid production, water reabsorption, etc. It is essential then that, even in juvenile iguanas, a crude fiber of 14-16% should be observed to satisfy this requirement. Older iguanas should receive a greater proportion of 16-18% in their diets. It is noteworthy to caution that many iguanas suffer for malnutrition and inappropriate management resulting in unwanted, sick or abandoned lizards. It is difficult to get an accurate guide for care since many recommendations are based on personal experience and not scientific research. So the best way to approach it is to examine the wild iguana's natural habitat and food supply.

A Humane Education Center And Home For Abandoned and Abused Animals Get An Update On Life At The Sanctuary Our Cover Kids Sam and Camellia, Raga and Bruce lay together in the Downstairs Warren. They are four of more than two hundred and fifty Animals who have found their way to The Sanctuary. Camellia, one of the butterscotch colored Rabbits, was one of 23 Rabbits who were rescued from a Golf Course where many had been born after residents near the course dumped adult Rabbits. Her apparent twin, Samantha, is really not a relation. Sam along with her three sisters were found in a box in a shopping center's parking lot. Luckily, concerned employees of nearby stores called the Shelter and Humane Officers were able to pick them up quickly. One of her sisters, Spot can be seen on our Rabbit's Page Bruce and Raga are related, sister and brother, though they came from different litters. The humans who were responsible for allowing their parents to breed were desperate to place them along with their siblings. They claimed, and this is a direct quote, "We didn't know what would happen if you put a male and a female together." It took them five litters to figure it out. The Sanctuary no longer accepts Animals from private individuals. We are committed to working with our local Shelter, where we are making a real difference for the abandoned Rabbits and other Animals in our community.

Pet Sitting is a great alternative to kenneling your pet or having your neighbors or friends watch your pet.
Kennels restrict pick up times, they can be very expensive, they usually do not conform to our pets schedules and most importantly they often make our pets uncomfortable by being away from home.
Asking neighbors or friends to watch your pets can create a difficult situation because you often feel like you are imposing on them, so you don't lay out clear guidlines as to what you want, how many visitis you want, and how often they need to be feed and walked.
Consider Pet Sitting. Your pet stays at home, where he or she is comfortable. When you arrange for us to visit your pet, feed your pet, and exercise your pet you arrange them based on your pets schedules, not at the whim of the kennels, and not when your neighbor or friend remembers to show up.

    92. Care Of Green Iguanas
iguanas have short, powerful limbs equipped with strong, sharp claws (for climbingand digging), and a long, strong tail. They can reach lengths of 66½ feet.
    http://www.caringtogether.com/exotics/iguanas.html
The green (or common) iguana (Iguana iguana) is an arboreal (tree-living) and diurnal (daylight-active) lizard usually found at elevations below 3000 feet in tropical and subtropical regions from northern Mexico to central South America. It is most often found in the vicinity of rivers and streams. Male iguanas tend to be larger and have brighter overall coloration than females. The distinct color of males is especially pronounced during the breeding season. Males tend to have larger heads than females, in part because of swollen jowls. Both sexes have 12-13 prominent pores arranged in a row on the underside of both thighs. These glandular structures secrete a waxy substance with which iguanas mark their territory and identify each other. As the males mature, their "femoral pores" develop slight outward projections. This developmental modification probably enables the male to better grasp the female during copulation. An iguana's skin is entirely covered with very tiny scales. Iguanas cannot change their coloring (as chameleons do), but certain areas of their skin can become darker when exposed to direct sunlight. Young iguanas are pale blue-green with dark-ringed tails. They mature to a lighter, more earthy color, usually with dark vertical bars on the body and tail. Vision, hearing and the sense of smell are acute. In their natural environment, iguanas tend to be very wary, hiding or fleeing at any sign of danger. Iguanas are somewhat clumsy but accomplished tree climbers. They tend to bask by day on tree branches, often over water. When frightened or threatened, they usually drop (sometimes from great heights) into the water below. Being excellent swimmers, they quickly make their way to protective cover by pressing their front limbs along their sides and swishing their powerful tails from side to side. Iguanas can also safely land on the ground and run to protective cover after jumping from substantial heights. When threatened or cornered, iguanas can defend themselves with astonishingly quick, whip-like lashes of their tails and with their claws and jaws.
