We have no creative writing courses in English so for a moment I thought it to be a task that was far beyond our power but then the temptation of such a challenge finally made me change my mind. Some of our students do write, a few of them have even published some pieces of poetry and short fiction so there might be more of them, the secret ones who write just for themselves trying to find new ways of self-expression or looking for new values in our changing world where most of the old ones seem to have lost validity. And it seemed to be a plausible possibility. All I had to do was to find them and make them come out of hiding. And out they came, hundreds of Hungarian originals reached us some of them anonymous others just using their initials and though they suddenly felt extremely vulnerable by revealing their most intimate doubts and their suspense yet they took the risk and let us have their secret loneliness. I was reading and reading and amazed. Then my students of the Translation Program, who had just tried their hand in translating Hungarian literature into English, took their pick and bravely set to work with the aim of true fidelity in their mind. a two-year program. Hungarian Literature and Civilization (3 credits) Judit Hajnal Ward jhajnal@rci.rutgers.edu This course is intended for students interested in the traditions and characteristics of Hungarian culture and civilization. In the Spring 2002 semester students will also participate in an American-Hungarian cultural awareness program The course aims at discussing a variety of topics on Hungarian civilization, history, literature, arts and music through students’ active participation in class discussions, correspondence with Hungarian students and presentations as well as comparing issues in Hungarian and American culture. Students are encouraged to do research on the subjects they have chosen in Hungarian civilization using English and Hungarian language materials prior to their presentation, then consider the issues of the class discussion. Students are also supposed to attend a workshop to be held April 29-30, and give a presentation on their findings. The course paper should focus on one or more issues of the main topics and the discussions including the impressions and findings of comparative cultural studies. Class Discussion and Presentation For the class discussion, each student should thoroughly read the assigned texts before class. Texts are available on this website. The class discussion includes a 15-minute presentation of the subject, raising and answering related questions, commenting on the texts, and moderating a free discussion on issues related to the text, the topics, the author, or the era. Attendance and participation are reflected in your final grade.

Literature relationships between Hungary and Estonia Arvo Valton Affinity, above all, is being aware of affinity. Generally, the voice of blood starts to appeal if such awareness exists. A clearer awareness of affinity of Finno-Ugrian nations emerged only at the last century. First assumptions by linguists about affinity of Hungarian and Lappish languages were rather shocking for the most part of the Hungarian society. The knowledge that one or another Finno-Ugrian nation is not an exceptional relic in this world became one of the pivots of our self-consciousness probably only in this century. Providing actual support – no matter how moderate – to each other has turned into a practice only in the recent times. So far, a smaller nation’s eyes continue to be fixed with hope on a bigger nation. Generous care for one’s weaker sisters still remains a rarity, as well as cognition that supporting smaller ones makes us greater both in our and the world’s opinion. After the World War I, Hungary was one of the first countries to recognise the Republic of Estonia, though the whim of history was to have them on opposite sides in the battle. One of the first trade agreements of the young Estonian Republic was concluded with Hungary – notwithstanding that, earlier, tangible trade relations were rather modest. One of the reason, indeed, was the awareness of affinity. It is worth to note that the solidarity of Finno-Ugrian nations is based on the idea of importance of the proximity of languages rather than that of blood or race. This is probably the reason why numerous joint projects in the areas of language, literature, traditional art and education have been paid special attention.
