Teens Prefer Talking To Mom About Drugs
Study Finds 'Normalizing' Drug Talks More Effective
POSTED: 11:48 a.m. EST January 27, 2003
When it comes to talking about serious subjects, such as taking drugs, U.S. teens apparently believe that mother knows best, according to a Pennsylvania State University study. "Seventy percent of the adolescents in my study stated that they were more comfortable discussing important topics with their mothers," said Dr. Michelle Miller-Day, assistant professor of communication arts and sciences in Penn State's College of Liberal Arts. Miller-Day found that 12 percent of teens favored talking with their fathers, while 7.4 percent preferred grandparents, 7.4 percent went to siblings, and 3 percent preferred talking with other extended family members. "Neither race nor gender had any significant impact on the overall tendency of teenagers to confide in their mothers," Miller-Day said. The study, which was based on a survey of 67 teenagers ages 11 to 17, was published in a recent issue of the

    Critical Theory of the Family

Entire book (out of print) by historian Mark Poster, Professor of History at University of California - Irvine. "People are intensely interested in finding out how the family is faring, how it has evolved from the past and what forms it may take in the future. Yet social science does not have an adequate definition of the family, or a coherent set of categories from which to analyze it, or a rigorous conceptual scheme to specify what is significant about it. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate the weaknesses of existing theories of the family in the fields of history, sociology and psychology and to offer at least the beginnings of a more adequate theory."
    Domestic Violence Clearinghouse

The Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline (DVCLH) has been working to reduce domestic abuse in Hawaii for over a decade. We are the only agency in the State whose services are uniquely designed to provide civil legal assistance and advocacy to domestic abuse victims, and whose caseload is comprised exclusively of these victims.

Case study and ethnographic methods used in the context of student-family field-based experiences appear promising for guiding students in understanding family perspectives and in developing personal theories about early interventions in rural settings. These personnel preparation processes have the effect of helping students engage in a life-long process of establishing their own professional identities.
