The Amerindians migrate to, and inhabit South America. The legend of the Empire Of Eldorado is born. The earliest account of the territory of Guiana is made in a dispatch to the Royal Council of Spain in which the Governor of Trinidad, Antonio de Berreo, describes his journey down the Oronoco and his attempt to explore Guiana. Sir Robert Dudley makes inquiries about the rumoured Empire of El Dorado  when his ship puts in to Trinidad. A small boat is sent to investigate and its crew returns to say that the natives (Amerindians)had told them of gold-mines so rich that the people of the country powdered themselves with gold dust. 'And farre beyond them', they said, 'a great towne called El Dorado, with many other things.' The Dutch make their first voyage to Guiana. Dutch West India Company receives a charter for the Essequibo. Slaves arrive in the colonies from Africa. A small Dutch settlement is established on the Pomeroon River. War breaks out between England and Holland.

Culture
The visual arts, especially painting and sculpture, are highly developed and can be seen at special exhibitions in the capital. International success has greeted poet and novelist ER Braithwaite and the British-based actor Norman Beaton. Cricket and football (soccer) are the major outdoor sports, while the national indoor pursuit is dominoes. The majority of Afro-Guyanese are Christian, usually Anglican, and there's also a handful of Black Muslims. Most of the East Indian population is Hindu, but there's a sizeable Muslim minority. Guyanese food is distinctive and usually based on seafood or creole dishes like pepperpot, a spicy stew cooked in bitter cassava juice. Added to this are East Indian dishes such as curries and roti . Chinese food is also common. Beverages include Banks beer, local rum, brandy and whisky, and delicious fruit punches.

Terror in Guyana?
Short History of Guyana:
Pre-Independence
  • Guyana was originally settled by the Dutch in the 17th century. The British gained control of this territory, and it remained a colony from 1814 until 1966, when it gained its independence. The area that is now Guyana was 'discovered' by Spanish expeditions in 1499. By the mid-18th century the Dutch had forced out the Spanish and British expeditions. British control began in 1814, but the 'Colony of British Guiana' didn't officially come about until 1831. Slavery played a major role in the early history of Guyana. Guyana's first constitution was during British rule in 1928. The Right To Vote was granted in 1953. British Guiana gained full self-government in 1961, and the People's Progressive Party (PPP), under leader Cheddi Jagan, gained the majority in the legislative assembly. In 1962 Premier Jagan introduced a programme of radical economic measures. The violent riots and general strike that ensued wreaked havoc. British troops were called in to restore order in February 1962 and again in 1963.

Guyana (pronounced as it is spelled, guy ana, not ghee ana) is an Amerindian word which means "land of many waters". The country is aptly named because if its profusion of rivers, creeks, and other bodies of water. It is located in the northern part of the Amazon Basin of South America, so it is quite understandable that there should be many waterways to the Atlantic Ocean. The three main rivers are, from west to east, the Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice Rivers. Guyana, formerly British Guiana, is the only English-speaking country in South America , and its neighbours are Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname (formerly Dutch Guiana) to the west, south and east respectively. Although on the South American continent, Guyana is regarded as the only country in the West Indies the rest of the West Indies are island states. At 83,000 sq.miles (215,000 sq.km.) Guyana is about the size of the United Kingdom, and is the largest country in the West Indies. Of this area, some 90% of the population live in the coastal belt, some 270 miles long by 10 to 40 miles deep. This area is below sea level at high tide, so to stave off the relentless onslaught of the Atlantic Ocean, sea walls (or dykes) and sluices (or kokers ) line the coastline.

ST. JOSEPH MERCY HOSPITAL'S HISTORY T he St. Joseph Mercy Hospital had its beginnings when a group of catholic laymen of the "Sword of the Spirit" movement saw the need for another hospital in Georgetown, Guyana. The Sword of the Spirit was an Association of lay people pledged to the love and service of others with no exception. The idea of a catholic hospital was not a new one and over the years was being considered by different people, but for one reason or the other, had to be put aside. It was at a group discussion of the "Sword of the Spirit" that the idea of a catholic hospital was once again considered and a challenging decision was taken to build a catholic hospital. They envisioned that this hospital would have as its philosophy, the commitment to serve the community by making available competent health care to those who sought it, irrespective of race, colour or creed, mindful of the teachings of Jesus Christ, Gospel values and the spiritual/physical nature of humankind endeavors. The dignity and individuality of every person was to be honoured by rendering this care in a compassionate and Christian manner. As a result of this decision, a committee was setup to bring this project into being. The committee was comprised of doctors, lawyers and businessmen, all members of the "Sword of the Spirit" movement. Thus, in December 1943, with St. Joseph as it patron and a donation of three thousand dollars, the

Indian groups include the Warao (Warrau), Arawak, Carib, Wapisiana (Wapishana), Arecuna, the mixed “Spanish Arawak” of the Moruka River, and many more in the forest areas. The Makusí (Macussí or Macushí) are the most prominent of the savanna peoples. Sizable concentrations of Amerindians inhabit the far west along the border with Venezuela and Brazil. They are rarely seen in the populated coastal areas, although a few have interbred with blacks and East Indians. Since 1970, traditional Amerindian lands near the international borders have come under government control, although Amerindians continue to hold village lands informally throughout Guyana's interior.

GUYANA UNDER SIEGE A History of Political Alliances in Guyana:
by Hazel Woolford
HOME THIS article seeks to examine the status of political alliances in Guyana, during the second half of the twentieth century. It will be noted, that there was no scope for independents to contest elections, after 1953, and that the major political parties, only opted for alliances when their power appeared threatened, or when they were in the opposition. In 1951, the Waddington Constitution provided for universal adult suffrage in British Guiana. This historic step in our political history, meant that all Guyanese who were 21 years old and over, had the opportunity to vote, at the 1953 General Election. It was this election which sharply etched Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham in Guiana's political landscape. Jagan had successfully contested in the 1947 elections as an Independent candidate. But the 1953 general election was different. Jagan had become leader of the PPP, and the chairman was Forbes Burnham. While Burnham had not previously contested for a seat in the Legislative Assembly, he had participated in the municipal elections. Burnham had been elected a member of the Georgetown Town Council in 1952. Hence, he had a taste of the cut and thrust of politics. Both of these men were charismatic leaders who had established a strong relationship with the very militant trade unions. However, in the 1950s, they could not win the general elections easily, unless they joined forces. Jagan controlled the rural Indian votes while Burnham exercised a strong influence on the voting patterns in the urban centres, particularly in Georgetown. It was Norman Cameron's opinion that the coalition of Burnham and Jagan was an alliance of the major races and the two socialist ideologies.

Guyana Overview
GUYANA: LAND OF MANY WATERS ocated on the littoral of South America between Suriname on the east, Brazil on the south and Venezuela on the west and with its northern shores caressed by the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean, is the Republic of Guyana. Guyana is a relatively small developing country of 83,000 square miles. Better known in the history books as "Demerara" or "British Guiana," Guyana has a multi-ethnic population of just over 800,000 people which reflects the country's immigrant history. The largest ethnic group is the descendants of the East Indian indentured labourers from India. The descendants of Africans who were brought as slaves from West Africa, comprise the next largest ethnic group. Other significant groups are the native Amerindians, (who it is believed, came originally from Mongolia) Chinese and Europeans, many of the latter being of Portuguese extraction. Like the Indians and the Chinese, the Portuguese who came to "Demerara" mainly from Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde, were indentured labourers. During colonial rule they were regarded as separate and apart from other Europeans because of their indentured status. Due to many years of interracial marriage, a large segment of Guyana's population today is racially and ethnically mixed. The name "Guyana" is derived from an Amerindian word which means "

Brief History of the West Indies and French Guyana
by Philippe Rossignol. Translation by Tian Uddenberg Historic Highlights It is with the islands that Christopher Columbus and Europe had their first historically verified contact with America. These islands, situated as they were 'before' the continental landmass, were therefore known as 'Ante-islas' or Antilles. These were separated into Windward islands, the first encountered by a sailor coming from Europe, and Leeward islands, in particular, Saint Domingue. Nowadays, under the influence of the USA, one speaks of the islands of the Caribbean Sea, referring to those inhabitants who, together with the Taïnos and the Arawaks, peopled the islands. It was not until the C17 that France could begin to settle the Antilles, this in spite of the Treaty of Tordesillas which partitioned the New World between Spain and Portugal, to the exclusion of all other nations.

THE GUYANA STORY
G uyana, formerly known as British Guiana, is situated on the northern edge of South America between Venezuela to the west, Brazil to the south, and Suriname to the east. The land is rich in minerals, gold, diamonds, Savannah grass lands, rivers, and forested mountains. Guyana is Caribbean rather than Hispanic as other South American countries. Wide avenues, cool wooden buildings, and tropical vegetation go together to make Georgetown, the capital, a graceful city.
T hough once owned by the British, Guyana gained its independence in 1966. In 1970 the government was restructured along socialist lines with strong ties to Russia and Cuba. Now, twenty-eight years later, the country is slowly making economic recovery.
T he 800,000 plus inhabitants are composed of descendants from Africa and India with some Europeans, Chinese, and original Amerindians mixed in.
A ll toll they are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. Religious beliefs are varied. The British brought the Anglican, Catholic, and various Protestant religions to this nation. A large segment of the population came to this country from India, therefore both Muslim and Hindu religions are very popular.
T he name of the country means, "Land of Many Waters." The huge Essequibo River flows from near the Brazilian border northward for 400 miles. Much of the country is empty and unexplored, a challenge for anyone with a desire for pioneering and roughing it.
