by Dr. Moses Seenarine Introduction A History of the Guyanese Working People, 1881-1905 Gender Contributions How Europe Undeveloped Africa Although Guyana have had many native historians, Rodney is one of the first to discuss the position of African women in Guyanese society after the abolition of slavery. In A History of the Guyanese Working People, 1881-1905 they (women) sought to earn for themselves, but few survived without turning to an employed male relative, a husband, a "child-father" or some such. Little wonder that the women were so vociferous and so active during the riots. They were backing their men, and they were also fighting for themselves and for the reproduction of their families - as they had done before in the 1889 when they attacked the Portuguese retailers (1981:207). After making a careful analysis of the Court records of the 105 people convicted in the 1905 agitation, and another 45 charged and released, Rodney concludes that at least one in every three of the "rioters" was female (1981:205). Rodney also comments on the agency of urban African women like the "Tigress of Tiger Bay," and "Daisy, the centipede Queen," who became known for their independence and resistance to colonial exploitation. Besides urban resistance, he reveals that African women were involved in rural labor struggles as well, on the West and East coast, for example, where women like Dorothy Rice led in Ruimveldt rebellion in 1907 (1981:206-208).

Welcome to the Caribbean Home Page Welcome WTTC News Business ... Sports Caribbean Culture I. Culture Defined: Time and space are viewed through the lenses of history and geography. The human coefficient (the individual, group, community, nationality) constructs the unfolding of time, which offers the perspective through which culture is interpreted.
Culture is often hard to objectively define in study but can be simplified as the body of people's expressions, values, meanings and artifacts that anchor peoples' identity. Caribbean culture is identifiably linked to the approaches to survival taken by her peoples. This is the definition of 'livity' - the Rastafari lexicon offering to explain how people live, ideas that inform livelihood, responses to them, and ultimately how this impacts others. In respect of the Caribbean, culture can be viewed as a continuous inspiration of 'livity', organic and inorganic materials, organized around a constellation of landmasses, peoples and epochs, within a Western 'carried beyond' or Caribbean dispensation.

G uyana, a country of exceptional natural beauty, is a splendid combination of the Caribbean and South America, with fascinating touches of a sometimes turbulent past. Perched on the north-east corner of the South American continent, Guyana stretches 450 miles from its long Atlantic coastline into dense equatorial forest and the broad savannah of the Rupununi. T he picturesque capital and primary port is Georgetown, a city of comfortable, modern hotels, fine colonial buildings, and broad, tree-lined boulevards. The striking wooden architecture is reminiscent of Guyana's centuries as a Dutch, and then a British colony. Georgetown offers an evocative introduction to the land of Guyana. Don't miss the imposing St. George's Cathedral, reputed to be the tallest wooden building in the world. L ife in Guyana is dominated by mighty rivers, including the Demerara, the Berbice and the Essequibo, which provide essential highways into the rain forests and jungles of the interior. Mankind has made little impact here, and today Guyana remains one of the world's most exciting destinations for adventuresome travel and exploration.

South America > Guyana GUYANA - formerly spelled GUIANA - is an Amerindian word meaning -Land of many waters- because of the many rivers and creeks which crisscross the land. It lies on the north-east corner of the South American continent between latitudes 1 and 9 North and longitudes 56 and 62 West. Its borders are Venezuela to the West, Brazil to the South, and Suriname to the East. The country has three distinct geographical areas: the coastal belt, the forest area and the savannah zone. Guyana lies 1 to 1.5 meters below sea level at high tide. The flatness of the coast necessitates an equally elaborate system of drainage canals. The most valuable mineral deposits are bauxite, diamond, gold and manganese. Its rivers are Demerara, Berbice, Essequibo and Corentyne. Essequibo is by far the largest. Guyana is also called "the land of six peoples." Guyana is 214,970 square kilometers in area - 83,000 square miles with a population of approximately 780,000.
