Art and Culture [top]
Eskimo art continues to show signs of the close relationship between form and function. Artefacts were an integral part of everyday life and also of religious life, and art as understood in western Europe did not appear until late. The Greenlandic word for art, erqumitsuliaq, literally means "something odd, which has been constructed" and was only coined after the first meeting with the Europeans. The interpretation of Nature, Man, animals, legends and myth reflected the Eskimo world, in which everything had an inua and was considered to be alive. The old adage that animals will only let themselves be killed by a beautiful weapon clearly illustrates this belief. Decorations are widely used; as reinforcements for the seams of garments, as skeletal decoration on figures and masks, and as women's facial tattoos. Today they are only used decoratively, particularly by artists from East Greenland. The sealers, who carved their own tools, found it just as natural to carve small figures. Sculpture was therefore the dominant art form, also because of the raw materials available (bone and soapstone). The artistic expression was generally realistic, grotesque or more stylised. catechists (teachers and assistant priests), now emerged from the shadow of anonymity, among them Israil Gormansen and Aron of Kangeq, who amongst other things painted a large series of water-colours. In 1905, the shaman Mitsuarnianga was persuaded to create two assemblage-like sculptures representing the secret and evil magic being known as a

49. Whaling - A Part Of Our Culture
Whaling a Part of our culture. Whaling is part of our culture and history. Ifthis attitude becomes widespread it can become a problem for greenland.

Whaling - a Part of our Culture
Whaling is part of our culture and history. Like other forms of hunting, whaling is an important part of our present-day life, and for us is both a symbol and a living reality. But whaling has now become a symbol for many people in the western world. The whales have become a symbol of how human beings should treat living resources. This led to the so-called "moratorium" which meant a five-year total ban on all commercial whaling. During those five years extensive biological survey were carried out which showed that a number of whale stocks are far more plentiful than was believed just a few years ago. Nevertheless, strong economic and political forces are working to extend the whaling moratorium. In certain circles, the whaling issue has become a matter of ethics. If this attitude becomes widespread it can become a problem for Greenland. Greenland is part of the international community - also when it comes to whaling. So we must cooperate and negotiate with other countries and peoples, even if we disagree with them in their view of whaling.

Early Dorset chronology
The Dorset culture is the latest of the Palaeo-Eskimo cultures in the eastern Arctic. Its earliest and latest datings are found in the Ungava Bay area, southern part of Hudson Bay. Dorset may be split into three periods:
In Greenland only the early phases and latest phases are represented in the dated material, approximately 700 BC - 200 AD and 1100 - 1300 AD.
Early Dorset geographical area
Between these recently surveyed areas a few stray-finds indicate, that the Early Dorset groups also lived in entire East Greenland. By delineating the Early Dorset distribution to the above regions, we exclude the northernmost regions of Greenland, which is the traditional area of the largely contemporaneous Independence II culture . The separation of the two groups is difficult, but minor differences in the lithic artifact designs can be seen, probably as a reflection of the variations in resource base, which is conditioned by the extreme climatic settings in northernmost Greenland.

Thule culture chronology
The Thule culture is the latest of the so-called Neo-Eskimo cultures. Developed around 1000 AD in North Alaska it spread eastwards along the Arctic shores of North America to Labrador and Greenland, which was reached approximately 1200 AD.
From the 15 th century Thule culture sites were found throughout the eastern Arctic region. After that time, the culture was absent in the High Arctic and concentrated at lower latitudes. Recent migration from Canada into the Avanersuaq (Thule) area in northwestern Greenland began in the 18 th century. Radiocarbon datings from Thule sites
Geographical areas of Thule culture Social organisation of Thule culture Relatively large settlements dating to the early occupational period tell about co-operation in whaling, especially in central West Greenland, the Avanersuaq (Thule) district and Northeast Greenland. On several sites, one larger structure has been interpreted as a qasse, or men's house. From the 17

Culture Greenland: Using Images and Technology to Bring People Together
Sisimiut, Greenland

The Sisimiut Museum determined in 2000 to make the cultural heritage of Greenland available on the Internet. Culture Greenland was opened in 2002, and is a portal to many aspects of Greenland and its history. The northernmost Internet café in the world is located here. Says Andreas Sakariassen, a hunter from Innaarsuit, "You have now opened an Internet Café. It must not be closed again, because then we will be missing something in our lives. There will be an emptiness.” This is the northernmost Internet café in the world. Within Culture Greenland, one of the main sources of information is the National Image Database. Both modern and historic subject matter are collected from all over Greenland and outside the country as a result of software developed by the Sisimiut Museum. Over 100 local image databases exist as independent units which are not accessible from the Internet. Software developed by Sisimiut Museum is distributed free of charge to private persons, organizations, and companies who commit themselves to provide images and information to the main database. In Greenland connection to the Internet is expensive, and the Internet connections are 'thin'. Culture Greenland uploads the information off-line to avoid the costs of long connections. Data from the local database is burned onto a CD and sent by mail to Sisimiut Museum where the actual uploading to the Internet takes place. This construction makes it economically possible for any one who has a computer to participate, and a variety of images and information accrue to the National Image Database of Greenland.
