Greek Geography
Geography is the study of landscape, such as the mountains, the rivers, the plains, the coastline, and the placement of cities. We begin to look at the geography of ancient Greece when we examine how Greeks lived on their farms, why they traded, road systems, and the plant life that ancient Greece had. Geography has always had a great influence on Greece and its inhabitants. It is largely responsible for numerous continuities in its extensive history. While the mountains that split the Greek lands have contributed to localism they have been a major barrier to unity as a nation. The struggle of communication by land and the significant presence of the sea have made mariners out of Greeks for numerous generations. The natural resources ensure a steady flow of abundance and guarantee sustenance if governed wisely. There are enormous obstacles in the way of studying the geography of ancient Greece. One obstacle is that because of the tradition of fragmented land holding; plots of land became very small and rarely have the same names through time. Because of this, archaeologists cannot identify a feature mentioned in a document and go and see what is there today. The second obstacle is that we are separated from the classical Greek landscape by a great gap in time: well over a thousand empty years with almost no relevant written record to show how the landscape was developing. Archaeological survey bridges this gap, but for geographical purposes, this information is extremely limited, in that much of the material found cannot be closely dated.

The Geography of Greece This page is the first stop on your journey through ancient Greece. Here you will get a better idea about the geography of Greece by reading the questions and traveling long ago and far away to ancient Greece to answer them. Where on Earth is Greece? photo courtesy of Pat Taylor Greece is located on a peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea. As you can see in the map above, Greece is almost completely surrounded by water. Many islands can be found around the peninsula. The large island at the bottom of the map is Crete. What does the land in Greece look like? photo courtesy of the Department of Archaeology, Boston University, Saul S. Weinberg Collection Much of Greece was rocky and barren and bad for agriculture . Most Greeks lived along the coast where the soil was good for farming. There were many mountains and valleys. The climate was hot and dry, and rainfall was limited to the winter months. With a shortage of land for farming, the Greeks came to rely upon trade with other countries for food, building supplies, and other goods. How would I get from place to place in Greece?

    Geography
Greece, officially known as the Hellenic Republic, lies at the southeastern tip of Europe. To the north, it borders with Albania, the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Bulgaria and to the east with Turkey. The area of the country is 131,957 sq. km and it consists of a peninsula and over 2000 islands. Though a relatively small country, Greece boasts an astonishing variety of landscapes —from the legendary mountains of Olympus, Pindos and Parnassos to miles of pristine coastline. Indeed, due to the large number of islands, Greece has a particularly long coastline (15,021 km.), which is the most extensive among all the Mediterranean countries. The climate is mostly dry and temperate, though it snows on the mountains and in the north. The climate of Northern Macedonia and northern Epiros is similar to the one of the Balkans, with freezing winters and very hot, humid summers, while the Attica region, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Crete and the Central and Eastern Peloponnese have a rather typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Greece is divided into the following geographical regions: • The Attica region (Athens)
    • Sterea Hellas (excluding the capital area)
In this region, at the heart of Greece, lies Delphi, which was the oracle of Antiquity. Running through central Greece is the rugged Pindos mountain range, with a peak of 2,637 m (Mt Smolikas).

    Ptolemy's Geography
The Science of the Earth's Surface
Ptolemy, who gave Greek astronomy its final form in the second century A.D., did the sameand morefor geography and cartography. His massive work on the subject, which summed up and criticized the work of earlier writers, offered instruction in laying out maps by three different methods of projection, provided coordinates for some eight thousand places, and treated such basic concepts as geographical latitude and longitude. In Byzantium, in the thirteenth century, Ptolemic maps were reconstructed and attached to Greek manuscripts of the text. And in the fifteenth century, a Latin translation of this text, with maps, proved a sensation in the world of the book. A best seller both in the age of luxurious manuscripts and in that of print, Ptolemy's "Geography" became immensely influential. Columbus one of its many readersfound inspiration in Ptolemy's exaggerated value for the size of Asia for his own fateful journey to the west.
