Writing a Philosophy Essay Grammar and Style Introduction When writing a philosophy essay you should adhere strictly to the grammatical rules of the language, as well as to its principles of morphology (word formation) and punctuation; you should also take care to avoid solecism (i.e., choose the right items of vocabulary for what you want to express), and write in a style which is clear and appropriate to the matter in hand. You should write formal prose; avoid informal constructions and colloquial turns of expression. (Note that this document is written fairly informally, so that in a number of respects – for example in its use of contractions like don't won't shouldn't etc. – is not to be imitated when you write your philosophy essays.) Following these injunctions is partly a matter of courtesy to your reader (who may also be your examiner): it shows that you are taking him or her, and your subject matter, seriously. But the main reason for doing so is that this is the best way to convey your thoughts clearly and accurately, so that your reader knows exactly what you are trying to say and is not distracted by irrelevancies or misled by extraneous difficulties of comprehension, such as unintended ambiguities. Here is a small example of what I mean. In colloquial English it is perfectly acceptable, and entirely normal, to omit the conjunction that at the beginning of a noun clause in such cases as He said that he was coming later , or She denied that he had done it .
