    Vivre la Difference
by Mr. Diction , the Language Pedant So, just what is the difference between "different from" and "different than?"
When "different" is used in the midst of a comparison (rather than as an unelaborated marker of otherness, as in "That style is certainly different"), it always takes the preposition "from," not "than." A handy method of confirming this rule is to turn "different" into a verb and see what preposition works with it in that form. For example, "I've discovered that being a Prodigy Internet community contributor is considerably different from/than what I anticipated after being a Prodigy Classic MemRep," resolves fairly simply when you recast it as "I've discovered that being a Prodigy Internet community contributor differs from/than what I anticipated after being a Prodigy Classic MemRep."
    Easy, huh?
Well, perhaps not. It seems that Webster's Dictionary of English Usage (WDEU) distains the notion that "different from" is preferable to "different than" by extension from the fact that "differs from" is right but "differs than" is wrong, no matter how awkward it sounds to the ear. WDEU even goes so far as to call upon H. W. Fowler (whose commentaries in A Dictionary of Modern English Usage it regularly bitchslaps!) to make the counterargument:
