PHYS 0103: Physical Geology with Laboratory
PHYS 0104: Physical Geology A broad introductory survey of geology that focuses on the role of plate tectonic theory in providing a fundamental understanding of the Earth as a global system. The course also provides students with an introduction to scientific methodology and to the multifaceted interactions between science, technology and society. Topics to be covered include the minerals and rocks that make up the Earth's crust, the processes of weathering and erosion that shape the Earth's surface, the internal structure of the Earth, geological hazards, and energy and mineral resources. Students may receive credit for either PHYS 0103 or PHYS 0104, but not for both.
PHYS 0106: Historical Geology A survey of Earth history (with an emphasis on North America) and on the scientific principles on which that history has been based. The course also provides students with an introduction to scientific methodology and to the multifaceted interactions between science, technology and society. Topics to be covered include the interpretation of sedimentary rock sequences in terms of depositional environments, the history of life on Earth as inferred from the fossil record, and a synthesis of Earth history in terms of plate tectonics.
PHYS 0230: Earth and Space Sciences Seminar Offers students a chance to pursue topics in astronomy, geology, or related fields at a level beyond that of the introductory courses in those areas. One or more topics from a single discipline will serve as a focus for the course each semester. Topics will vary depending on the interests of the instructor and the students. Active student participation is required. May be repeated for credit with a different topic.

INTRODUCTION
The Internet includes a complex World Wide Web (WWW) of resources on Earth and the geosciences that grows each second. As you read this note, people all over the world are adding information to the Internet for you to find and use. Some of this information is historical in nature. But much Internet information is added in real timethat is, as fast as events occur, observations are made, and the data are recorded and/or interpreted. Unfortunately, a search for specific information can take a long time, and addresses of specific sites (called "universal resource locators", or "URLs") tend to change often. Some of the URL's listed on pages in your laboratory manual or this Internet site may even have changed already. Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology is produced under the auspices of the American Geological Institute and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers Richard M. Dreamweaver Cheat Sheet Physical Geology Website Assignment Earlham College, Geology 211, Spring 2002 As one component of your lab grade in Geology 211, you are assigned the task of preparing a website for publication on the internet. The topic of your website is up to you but must be about a facet of physical geology that we will be discussing in this course. You may decide to discuss several related geological phenomenon. There are several provisions and for you to consider while deciding on a topic. You are encouraged to use the resources available on the internet to create your project. (Use the web to build the web). When selecting information, it is up to you to identify sources that provide authoritative information on your specific geological interest. When building your website, you may approach it in 2 different ways. First, you may use DreamWeaver 4 to edit the Template provided. DreamWeaver 4 is available on the PCs in the Wildman Science Library Computer Lab. A "cheat sheet" to ease your use of DreamWeaver is provided in the link to the left. If you are already versed in webpage design, you may prepare your webpage in any manner you please, using any software to which you have legal access. The end product must be a viable, readable and comprehensive survey of your topic.

  • Summary and Purpose
The natural environment sector aims to better understand the physical and natural environment of the Wadi el-Far'a. This study of the natural environment includes the sub-disciplines of geology, physical geography, hydrogeology, and biology. Due to an extremely limited access to the study area, the majority of information is based on previously published reports and tests done in the Wadi el-Far'a, and the maps produced were based on synthesizing available map data.
Geographically, the Wadi el-Far'a study area is located in the northern region of the West Bank. It is notable that the topography of the region changes from -300m to 700m above sea level.
Because only one climate station is located within the Wadi el-Far'a study boundary, the climate and meteorological information relied on the use of other stations with a similar climate to get a complete picture. The climate is dominantly a Mediterranean semi-arid, with mild rainy winters and moderately dry, hot summers. The highly variable rainfall and temperature are influenced by both elevation and the circulation of the air-stream.
The Wadi el-Far'a study area is almost completely contained within the Eastern Mountain Aquifer, one of the three main West Bank aquifers. The regional direction of ground water flow is toward the Jordan River. Because springs provide the base flow component of the system, the Wadi el-Far'a stream does not dry up in the summer. Gaining a firm understanding of the hydrogeology is complicated by the regular interaction between groundwater in the fractured limestone aquifer and by the poorly defined aquifer boundaries. The large variations in transmissivity have, to date, been presumed to be a result of a more interconnected network of fractures as well as more solution activity in the lower part of the study area near the Jordan River discharge location.

For the last seven years I have been teaching introductory Geology, Physical Science, and Energy classes at College of the Redwoods (CR) as a Associate Faculty in the Math and Science Departments, as well as Physical Geology and Earthquake Country at HSU. Additionally, Dave Bazard* and I offer every semester (at CR) a popular field geology course in which we go to various locations in the Pacific Northwest. Two of these field trips are provided below as links. * A Geology alumnus who is now Full time instructor at College of the Redwoods Research Interests My research interests for the past 30 years have been North Coast Seismicity and the interaction and geometry of the plates that make up the Mendocino Triple Junction. Every earthquake that occurs, I immediately look at its focal mechanism, and see if it fits the model we developed while at TERA Corp. So far, so good!
