Futurism Here is a brief overview of the Futurist movement. The artists mentioned are but a few of the many that contributed to the movement. All of the works mentioned can be viewed in the Artist's Gallery. "Futurism was a far-reaching Italian movement that included poetry, literature, painting, graphics, typography, sculpture, product design, architecture, photography, cinema and the performing arts and focused on the dynamic, energetic and violent character of changing 20th century life, especially city life. It particularly emphasized the power, force and motion of machinery combined with the contemporary fascination with speed while at the same time denouncing the 'static' art of the past and the passéist or old-fashioned establishment. On the downside it also glorified war, apparently denigrated women, initially favoured Fascism and vilified artistic tradition wanting to '…destroy the museums, libraries, academies of every kind…'." http://www.futurism.org.uk/futurism.htm

Italy, 1908 In a stylistic idiom that integrated some of the techniques of Cubism [more] and Divisionism, the Futurists glorified the energy and speed of modern life together with the dynamism and violence of the new technological society. In their manifestos, art, poetry, and theatrical events, they celebrated automobiles, airplanes, machine guns, and other phenomena that they associated with modernity; they denounced moralism and feminism, as well as museums and libraries, which they considered static institutions of an obsolete culture. 93. CPR - Toward The New Futurism, By Garrick Davis
Toward the New futurism. futurism, in fact, was the hidden lever that transformedPound into a Modernist poet and thus, through him, English poetry.

The artistic movement which Filippo Tommaso Marinetti launched on the front page of Le Figaro in 1909 with his famous manifesto, which Guillaume Apollinaire would soon call le nouveau esprit , and which quickly spread throughout continental Europe as the last great art fashion, Il Futurismo , never took root in England or America. The explicit program of Futurism in every country which embraced it was an assault against tradition in all of its forms: political, social, and cultural especially. Thus it exercised an immense influence in the more tradition-bound and backward countries such as Italy and Russia, whose citizens watched the modernization of their more industrialized neighbors in jealous admiration. But it is not a coincidence that Futurism was least appreciated in those countries which had already experienced the Industrial Revolution; for the citizens of Manchester and New York, the future was already there, and it wasn't pretty.
Marinetti traveled across Europe giving theatrical lectures on his new movement, inciting riots in some places and applause in many others. He never made it to America, but his English visit in 1913 impressed Wyndham Lewis and Ezra Pound enough that they promptly created the Vorticist movement that same year, and stocked it with Futurist themes. In the first issue of the house magazine

FUTURISM IN POLAND FUTURISM was a movement based on a strong protest against established cultural values and the hierarchy of these values accepted by society and inherited from the past generations. Major representatives of this movement include: Jerzy Jankowski Bruno Jasienski Stanislaw Mlodozeniec Tytus Czyzewski All of the above were associated with the Krakow based group, founded in 1917 and called "Barrel-organ" (Katarynka). The name of the group referred to "low art" aimed at the ordinary reader but identified only with an active minority within Polish society. The second centre of futurist art was Warsaw; their main representatives being: Anatol Stern Aleksander Wat Soon after 1920 the two groups co-operated closely and together "performed" poetry reading evenings. They recited their works, read out their manifestos and engaged in harmless scandalous behaviour. All their activity focused on getting maximum attention, offending the aristocracy and local authorities and destroying the existing deeply -rooted cultural habits and patterns of behaviour. Futurist artists wanted to occupy the central position in order to dictate new rules and mould the future according to their own vision. What were the main elements of the futurist vision and their new poetics?

The only modern movement to be largely independent of Paris, Futurism was nevertheless born there when an article was published in Le Figaro announcing `a new beauty ... a roaring motor car, which runs like a machine-gun, is more beautiful than the Winged Victory of Samothrace. We wish to glorify war.' In 1912 the Futurist Exhibition was also held in Paris, and then moved on all over Europe, causing riots and general uproar. Here we examine the work of Italian and Russian Futurists such as Russolo, Boccioni, Larionov and Goncharova, and their relationship with the French Cubists. What they all had in common was an approach to avant-garde art which can broadly be termed `dynamism,' the attempt to present movement. As a Futurist manifesto put it: `universal dynamism must be rendered as dynamic sensation ... motion and light destroy the substance of objects.'

Cubo-futurism
Cubo-futurism developed in Russia around 1910. It was essentially a synthetic style, a reinterpretation of the French Cubism (Picasso and Braque) and Italian Futurism (Marinetti, Boccioni) popular at that time in Europe, combined with a strong Neo-primitivist belief in the dynamic possibilities of color and line. The Cubo-futurist movement attracted such talented artists as Goncharova, Larionov, Popova, Malevich, Tatlin, and many others. In Russian interpretation, sometimes there is no significant difference between a Cubist and Cubo-futurist painting. Both feature bold colors, and the fragmentation of the objects on the canvas' surface. Perhaps Cubo-futurism places more emphasis on movement and action; it is also often characterized by the inclusion of various letters, even complete words, in the composition. Goncharova's The Cyclist (1912-13), Popova's Italian Still-Life (1914) and Seated Figure (ca. 1915), as well as Malevich's An Englishman in Moscow (1914) and The Knife Grinder (1912) are not only good examples of the painterly possibilities opened up by the Cubo-futurist style but also excellent illustrations of various artistic approaches to it.
