Gardening Tips for Beginners

Good planning is essential to successful gardening. Start your garden off right by selecting the right location that receives plenty of direct sunlight and has good drainage. Try to steer clear of trees and shrubs that would compete with your garden plants for water, light and nutrients. Pollination Is Essential in Home Orchard
If growing your own fruit is in your landscape plan, you'll need to make sure you've provided an adequate opportunity for pollination to occur. In most cases, you will need to plant at least two of each type of fruit tree. Learn more about the two types of pollination of fruit trees Home Gardener's Guide (PDF)
Planning is the first and most basic step in home vegetable gardening. It not only saves time when you're ready to plant but also gives you an idea of the types and quantities of seeds or plants you'll need. Before the season starts, make a rough "blueprint" of your garden plot. Include in your sketch the vegetables you will plant, which rows they will be in, the distance between rows, the expected planting date, and any other information you feel would be helpful.

Fall: Saving Seeds from the Garden
Collecting seeds from garden plants to plant next year may seem like a good way to save money, but you may be in for a surprise. Some seeds can be saved from year to year with good results, particularly the old-fashioned cultivars. But modern hybrid cultivars rarely breed true from collected seed. Pears Best Ripened Off the Tree
One advantage to growing your own fruit trees is that you can get tree-ripened fruit, a real rarity in the grocery store. But, unlike other fruits, pears will reach their best quality when ripened off the tree. Hot Weather Tough on Plants and Gardeners
Sultry summer weather is not only tough on gardeners but on our plants as well. In addition to garden and landscape plants gasping for water, some vegetable crops have trouble producing when under stress. August: Question and Answer, Kiwi

4 steps to get your winter vegetables safely through to spring
By Paige Bowers You should begin to harvest carrots when they are about 3/4 of an inch in diameter. Regardless of the season or vegetable, there's a real difference between caring for cool- and warm-weather crops. If you want good-quality produce from fall plantings, you must give your plants the best growing conditions possible to make them less vulnerable to disease and insect infestation. That said, check out these four steps to cool weather crop care so you can reap a bountiful harvest next spring. South Carolina-based gardener Chad Henderson says that before anything else, backyard farmers need to make their first plantings whether they're broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, or lettuce well after the hottest months of summer and about a month before the first freeze.

A beehive in the garden ensures a good seed crop and fresh honey for the table
By Marla Spivak Honeybees can help pollinate your garden crops. If you've never considered the possibility of raising bees, think of all the garden crops that rely upon pollination. Even accounting for native bee pollinators, honeybees still do most of the pollinating of fruits and vegetables in your garden. If you've ever suffered poor fruit sets of apples, cherries, cucumbers, melons, or strawberries, the reason might be too few honeybees. And then, of course, the honey you will harvest is your reward for keeping your garden pollinated and your bees healthy. Small-scale beekeeping is very doable. But before you plunge too deep, a few preliminaries need to be covered. If you're in an urban or suburban environment, check with your neighbors to see if they have bee sting allergies. Some people have severe, even deadly, reactions to bee stings.

31. Practices To Enhance Marketing Of Fruits And Vegetables
A diverse group of crops is ideal, since market demand changes rapidly. There areno federal support prices for fruits and vegetables to help the grower
http://marketingoutreach.usda.gov/info/99Manual/marketfruit.htm
Practices to Enhance Marketing of Fruits and Vegetables
Charles A. Mullins, Professor The future shows more promise for large scale producers or small scale producers than for mid sized producers. The large scale producer can afford the large equipment needed for production, and the use of migrant labor. Small scale producers can use smaller equipment, often hand operated, and family or local labor to substitute for other equipment. Large producers are linked through brokers to supply produce over a relatively long season or year round and it is difficult for small scale producers to supply the quantity and quality required over a long period. Both types of producers can be highly successful or can go broke as production and marketing practices are highly volatile. A mid sized producer is less efficient, and often can't economically justify the purchase of needed equipment or substitute labor for equipment. There are opportunities for small scale producers for on-farm markets, organized farm markets, locally owned supermarkets, and locally owned fruit and vegetable markets. When selling to any market, and especially to local supermarkets or fruit and vegetable markets, good communication between producer and buyer is essential. A producer needs to know what, when, and how much the buyer can use. The buyer needs to know what is available and when, as he has to keep the shelves stocked. Determining a fair price can be difficult. Daily market prices are available on the internet. County Extension personnel can access this information for producers. Retailers generally double the price paid to account for shrinkage and spoilage.

even fruits, nuts, seeds, grains, and vegetables used in baby food
In the 1970s, reluctant food processors "voluntarily" took processed free glutamic acid (MSG) out of baby food. Today it's back, in fertilizers called "Omega Protein Refined/Hydrolyzed Fish Emulsion" and "Steam Hydrolyzed Feather Meal," both of which contain hydrolyzed proteins; and in a product called AuxiGro WP Plant Metabolic Primer (AuxiGro) produced by Emerald BioAgriculture (formerly Auxein Corporation). AuxiGro is being sprayed on some of the vegetables our children will eat, into the air our children must breath, and onto the ground from which it can move into drinking water. Head lettuce, leaf lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, and peanuts were among the first crops targeted. On September 12, 2000, the Auxein Corporation Web site gave the following information: Crops registered include: Celery; Fresh Market Cucumbers; Edible Navy and Pinto Beans; Grapes; Bulb Onions; Bell, Green and Jalapeno Peppers; Iceberg Head Lettuce; Romaine and Butter Leaf Lettuce; Peanuts; Potatoes; Snap Beans; Strawberries; Processing Tomatoes; Fresh Tomatoes; and Watermelons. Today, there is no crop that we know of that has not been approved for treatment with MSG by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Inoculations Problematic
Inoculating these impoverished children is almost impossible with the current technology, Arntzen says. Vaccines that are now available have to be injected, with the single exception of the oral polio vaccine. And injections are too expensive and too problematical in much of the world.
Although philanthropic organizations pick up most of the cost, hundreds of millions of children are left unprotected because an inoculation that may cost pennies to produce is simply out of their reach.
