Wildlife facts: frogs and toads
The spread of London's urban environment has led to the destruction of over 90% of the City's natural ponds - sites vital to the survival of amphibians. The saviour of the common frog and toad has been the increase in the number of garden ponds, providing an artificial alternative to lost wildlife habitats. Sadly, toads have been less successful than frogs in adapting to garden ponds and their numbers have been particularly affected by the loss of natural wetland habitat.
Spotting The Difference
Common Frog Rana temporia The most obvious difference between these two amphibians is their skin. Frogs have moist smooth skin, greenish brown to yellow in colour, with a distinctive brown patch behind the eye. Toads have drier bumpier skin, which is often brownish. The slimy look of frogs (they don't feel slimy) is caused by a secretion from glands in the skin, which keeps it moist and supple. This is extremely important as frogs breath through their skin as well as through their lungs. Toads do this to a lesser extent. Common Toad Bufo bufo
Growing up: from egg to adult
Frogs lay their spawn in shallow, still water, forming large clumps of eggs which rapidly swell up as they absorb water. Toads tend to spawn in deeper water forming ropes of eggs, which wind around plant stems. There can never be too much spawn! Out of 2,000 eggs, on average only 5 adults will survive to breed. The rest form part of the diet for fish, newts, birds, water beetles, and even tadpoles.

Often, the area was flooded when there was heavy rain. Even when it rained lightly, puddles of water formed on the ground. And in the night, frogs and toads would call loudly. Sometimes their "chorus" could be quite deafening. One frog species, the Banded Bullfrog, Kaloula pulchra (family Microhylidae), was plentiful then. There seem to be fewer of them around now. I had difficulty finding them during the occasional trips back to my hometown. The call of the males of this species has been described as being like the "bellow of cattle". This frog would puff itself up when disturbed. In dry conditions, the frog would hunker down under logs or rocks and perhaps it could even bury itself in the ground. (Note: The frog shown here is not the Banded Bullfrog, but the Cooper-cheeked Frog. The photos shown here were taken in various localities.)

Scientific Name: Bufo americanus
Length : 2 1/2 to 3 inches
Picture by The Ohio Dept. Of Natural Resources
American toads are very common in Ohio. They have either one, two, or three warts in the dark spots on their backs. American toads spend the spring breeding in shallow ponds. When these toads leave the ponds, they leave behind long strands of eggs. One female American Toad can lay as many as 12,000 eggs. Soon after these eggs are hatched, little black tadpoles emerge and soon turn into tiny toads. Unlike most animals, this toad does not drink water. Instead it absorbs water through its skin. (Denny, 19)
Name: Bullfrog
Scientific Name: Rana catesbeiana
Length : 3 1/2 to 6 inches
Picture by The Ohio Dept. Of Natural Resources
This frog is considered to be the largest frog in North America. The bullfrog's "jug-o'-rum" sound can be heard throughout Ohio's, marshes, and streams from late April through late summer. During their breeding season, they get very aggressive and become very protective over their territory. (Denny, 25)

Frogs and Toads of Florida
Joe Schaefer and Jennifer Liebertz Frogs and toads are members of the class Amphibia, the first backboned animals to live on land. The word Amphibia is derived from the greek word "amphibios," which means "double life". Most frogs and toads have two stages in their life cycle, larvae (tadpole) and adult. There are approximately 80 species known in the United States; of these, 22 frog (and 4 additional subspecies), listed in Table 1 , and 5 toad species, listed in Table 2 , are native to Florida.
DESCRIPTION
Frogs look different than toads in several ways. Most toads, except the eastern narrowmouth toad, have dry, warty skin, whereas frogs have moist, smooth skin. Most toads also have a pair of parotid glands bulging out from behind their eyes. These glands produce a bufotoxin that protects them from being eaten by most animals. All toads have these glands, but most are too small to severely affect people and our pets. The one exception is the non-native marine toad , which is large enough (6-inch long body) to release toxin amounts that can make people seriously ill, cause skin irritations, and kill dogs and cats. Frogs do not possess these glands, and there are no poisonous frogs in Florida. marine toad.

Frogs and Toads of the Chicago Region by Ellin Beltz
The Chicago Region includes all counties within a 75-mile radius of downtown Chicago and covers parts of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Before 1800, the region was a highly diverse series of environments including prairie, oak savanna, sand areas, eastern forest, and marshes like those on the lake plain and near the Kankakee River.
Each habitat type supported particular groups of amphibians at different times in its formation. This "snapshot in time" is of approximately the early 1800s. A similar map could be made today, however, much of the area has been urbanized and developed. Understanding the relationship between frogs and their environment reveals a fascinating story of the changes in the Chicago Region over the past 10,000 years. By about 13,000 years before the present, glacial ice which formerly covered the region had retreated. The environment then was a wild place. Giant lakes and huge floods helped sculpt the features left behind by the glacier while plants and animals attempted to gain a toehold in the rapidly changing environment. When the first frog arrived in the region is not known, but we do know that they migrated northwards from unglaciated areas, called "refugia," in the southern and southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico.
