F rench Guiana mapped using ERS radar imagery
With near permanent cloud cover over most of the country, inaccessible terrain, and vast tracts of dense tropical forest, it has proved impossible to produce reliable topographic maps of central and southern French Guiana even at small scales, using either Spot satellite imagery or aerial photography as the main data source.Under conditions such as these - few existing maps, relatively uniform terrain, constant cloud cover - synthetic aperture radar (SAR) stands out as the ideal mapping tool. IGN, France's national survey organization, was thus asked to produce a complete coverage of French Guiana using SAR image maps acquired by ERS spacecraft.
Advantages of mapping using SAR imagery
Among the land-based applications of SAR imagery gathered by the European Space Agency's ERS spacecraft, topographic mapping remained one of the least significant until very recently indeed. With their natural penchant for uniform coverage and exhaustive data, professional cartographers felt that ERS SAR imagery left much to be desired. In particular, they felt it was less rich than Spot optical imagery for the extraction of such planimetric objects as roads, urban areas, land use, and so forth. Then, studies by IGN Espace found that an absolute location accuracy of 30 m (rms error) could be achieved, without local ground control points (GCPs), using physical modelling by block triangulation and precision orbit data. This result plus the conclusions reached by a pilot project encouraged a digital geography group (Cellule d'Étude en Géographie Numérique, CEGN) within the French Ministry of Defence to investigate further the mapping potential of ERS imagery. In particular, the CEGN asked IGN Espace to produce a complete coverage of French Guiana in the form of ten ERS satellite image maps at 1:200 000.

A large basin in the northern half of Brazil is drained by the world's second-longest river, the Amazon. Agriculture, mining, and forestry make up a large part of Brazil's economy. Although the economy has brought prosperity to many Brazilians, others continue to live in poverty. Brazil's people have a mixed heritage that includes Native Americans and Portuguese. The Portuguese were the first and largest European group to colonize Brazil. The Andes mountain ranges border Argentina on the west. The Patagonian Plateau, the plains of the pampas, and the forests of Gran Chaco provide the resources for farming and ranching. Argentina is also one of South America's most industrialized countries.

http://www.geocities.com/delboy234/
France made French Guiana into a prison colony in the mid 19th century in order to reduce prison costs at home. Its last penal colony was closed in 1953. The tropical paradise of French Guiana now take prisoners of another variety. It is one of South America's costliest destinations.
Modern French Guiana is a land of idiosyncrasies, where European Space Agency satellite launches rattle the market gardens of displaced Hmong farmers from Laos and thinly populated rainforests swallow nearly all but the country's coastline. Highly subsidized by Mother France, it boasts the highest standard of living of any 'country' in South America, but look beyond the capital city and you'll still find backwoods settlements of Maroons and Amerindians barely eking out a living. Traveling in French Guiana isn't easy, but it is part of the adventure. And if you have Francophile leanings, live in the Americas and enjoy roughing it in the rainforest, it's one place where you can have your canapé under the canopy without crossing the pond to Charles de Gaulle.
Language
Although french is the official language, almost everyone speaks the native creole, French Guianese. The decendants of escaped slaves who have established villages in the interior and Amerindians maintain their own religions and speak Arawak, Carib, Emerillon, Oyapi, Palicur and Wayana.

  • France, the largest country in Western Europe, covers an area of 551.000 km², including the 8.680 km² of the island of Corsica. Mainland France is often referred to as "L' Hexagone" on account of its shape. The coastline is varied; Brittany, in the north-west, has a rugged northern coast, whereas further south, the Bay of Biscay has low-lying, sandy shores. The Mediterranean shore is flat and sandy in the west, becoming higher and rougher towards the east.
