Southern France
An Oxford Archaeological Guide HENRY CLEERE
This new addition to the Oxford Archaeological Guides series introduces the reader to The Midi, from the Massif Central to the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees. World expert Henry Cleere concentrates on the rich archaeological heritage of this region, from the cave art of the Paleolithic period, when our ancestors were decorating caves and rock shelters with dramatic depictions of hunting and ritual, through the end of Roman Gaul, visiting such tourist centers as Carcassonne, Arles, Avignon, Provence, and Nice. After being annexed by Rome in the 2nd century BC, the prosperous new province was endowed with many fine public buildings, such as the amphitheaters and theaters at Arles, Nimes, and Orange, the network of roads, and massive town walls. In addition, these areas offer a wealth of information about everyday life, such as the water mill at Barbegal, the potteries of La Graufesenque, and the houses of the town dwellers at Vaison-la-Romaine. Complete with maps, listings of museums, suggestions for further reading, and extensive coverage of sites, Southern France is the perfect guide for tourists and lovers of archaeology alike. Henry Cleere has been a consultant to the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in Paris since 1992, coordinating its work as advisor on cultural heritage to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. He is also Visiting Professor in Archaeological Heritage Management at the Institute of Archaeology, University College, London.

Mark Ledbury
Research Profile
Mark Ledbury has specialised in the relationships between literature and the visual arts in France. After a first degree in Modern Languages (French and German) at Robinson College, Cambridge, he went on to complete a PhD under the supervision of Professor Thomas Crow at the University of Sussex. His thesis, which closely compared the work of Jean-Baptiste Greuze and Michel-Jean Sedaine against the background of the evolution of genre theory in both art and drama in eighteenth-century France, is now published as Sedaine Greuze and The Boundaries of Genre (Oxford, Voltaire Foundation, 2000). During the course of that research, he discovered new material relating to the neglected playwright Michel-Jean Sedaine, including a lost manuscript play and correspondence revealing the links between Sedaine and Jacques-Louis David. He has also published (with David Charlton) Michel Jean Sedaine 1719-1797: Theatre, Opera and Art

Summer Session 2003
Field Study in the Architecture of Medieval France
June 18-July 31, 2003 (6 weeks)
Open to both advanced undergraduate and graduate students from any major or discipline, the program will emphasize the architecture, history, culture, economics, and technology of the Middle Ages, applying archival research, architectural conservation, archaeology, photography, videography, and digital media techniques. Students will live at the Château de Bostz located in Besson, near the city of Moulins. This private estate includes the remains of medieval castles once occupied by the ducs de Bourbon and still held by their descendants. The Bourbonnais, which is to the north of Auvergne and west of Burgundy in central France, flourished in the eleventh and twelfth centuries immediately prior to the dramatic turn of history when France became France.
Courses
Summer Field Study S4460. Architecture of medieval France: castle, cathedral, city, and cloister [in France].
4 points
Combines an introduction to the architectural monuments of the Middle Ages with fieldwork that encourages students to engage and document the evidence of the buildings in their urban or rural contexts. A collection of readings and resources will complement weekly site visits and research in local libraries and archives. Will concentrate on a remarkable group of over four hundred Romanesque churches. Students work in teams—each responsible for a particular aspect of architectural practice, including the overall plan of the church; the sculptured capitals; the techniques of masonry construction including walls, buttresses, and vaults; as well as liturgical furniture and devotional objects.

Southeast Asian Archaeology We offer classroom training at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Southeast Asian and Asian archaeology, and research opportunities in Southeast Asian archaeology and physical anthropology. Students have opportunities to gain analytical experience with our archaeological and skeletal collections from Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Ongoing fieldwork in southern Cambodia, through the Lower Mekong Archaeological Project (project co-director Miriam Stark), provide one of many fieldwork possibilities for the interested student. We also work actively with our colleagues from Southeast Asia and elsewhere to facilitate fieldwork opportunities for our students. A website to facilitate scholarly exchange in the field of Southeast Asian archaeology and anthropology has been created by Christopher King, University of Hawai`i, in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania Museum, Ban Chiang Project. The website came online July 9, 2001 and begins with a searchable bibliography with an initial database of over 3500 references. Users can search for references in various ways, mark the ones they need, then automatically display them in one of a dozen different journal styles pertinent to archaeologists and physical anthropologists. Users can also export the references into their personal bibliography database programs. The URL is
