Be prepared to be amazed by the unique world of FRACTAL MUSIC! What is Fractal Music? Why are Fractals cool? Find out more about Fractal Music! What is Fractal Music? Before we can understand fractal music, we must first find out what a fractal is. To obtain a fractal , we start with an equation. One example would be the Julia set: f(t)=t^2 + c Now we pick values for t and c, and away we go! Once we get an answer to the equation, we use the answer as the new value to plug in for t (keep c the same) and continue this process by plugging the answer back into the equation. This is called iteration What happens with all these numbers? Well, you could stare at them until you got dizzy, but that would not be any fun. Why not make a picture from the numbers? You can create fractal images (like the ones I have on this page) by using pixel coordinates and assigning colors to certain numbers. (It's sort of complicated to explain, and I think the images are cool, but the main point of this page is fractal music anyway.) About Fractals What are Fractals? Fractal Art...Fractal Music? Here goes my best explanation: Fractals are the representations of complex mathematical formulae which exhibit certain characteristics, namely self-similarity across many scales repeating patterns, similar, yet...slightly different. The images below are of the Mandelbrot set at increasing levels of magnification, right to left, top to bottom. Note how similar structures appear in all the images. Though called Chaos Theory, there is indeed order within this "Chaos" What you are seeing is the graphical representation of the Fractal Equation Z' = Z ^2 + C being iterated (looped) over and over hundreds of times at each coordinate. The result of the previous iteration is fed back into the equation and the result becomes the next Z' When Z' reaches a certain threshold or "escape" value the loop is exited... and the pixel is painted a certain color depending on how many times it looped before that value was reached. Z is a complex variable, meaning it is of the form a + bi, where i is the square root of negative one The a part represents the x axis (horizontal) as real numbers the bi part represents the imaginary plane (vertical) and C is a constant complex variable.

Chaos start page Heather Elko Chaos and the Logistic Map February 2001 Full Report (MS Word document) Chaotic Music Fractals are applications of chaos theory. They are derived by entering an equation into a computer. The picture that results, while seemingly chaotic, actually repeats over and over within itself. Thus, chaos theory emerges, which shows that seemingly chaotic systems actually do have order. These fractals are important because they are found over and over throughout nature. Coastlines have been described as chaotic, as they can be analyzed on many different levels producing different results. A coastline can be analyzed on the astronomic, topographic, or even microscopic level, each producing very different results. Fractals can also be seen in plants such as the fern, which is found to repeat itself over and over. Michael Barnsley was able to create a fractal that looked extremely similar to a fern. But one of the most interesting uses of fractals that I have discovered is that they are being used to create music. Music from chaos. Music from an algorithm. It's extremely compelling. There are many different types of fractals, and thus many different ways to transfer them to music. One example is the Julia set, below.
