Fossils in Death Valley National Park
This site forms an extensive guide to the fossils of the Death Valley National Park, California and Nevada, US. Numerous internal and external links illustrate the fossils and geologic records of the park, which preserves a record from the primordial Precambrian Era (over a billion years ago) to the Pleistocene Epoch. These sections are supported by images, descriptions, a discussion board, and a number of "virtual" field trips to fossil sites in the park. Paleontology; Fossils/Collection and preservation; Death Valley National Park (Calif. and Nev.) ; Fossils of Kentucky This colourful site provides an easy-to-use guide to fossils found in Kentucky for enthusiasts and anyone interested in fossil collection and identification in the area. It includes photographs, drawings and text descriptions together with an identification key and other fossil hunting information. As a whole, the site provides a clear and simple tutorial for beginners and a reference tool for more experienced collectors. Paleontology; Fossils;

Compiled by Dr Michael Rasser, a palaeontologist at Geologische Bundesanstalt, Vienna, this site aims to "present and support the work of geologists and paleontologists studying the Alpine Jurassic". The site includes a searchable literature database (currently containing 1134 records), descriptions of ongoing projects, a directory of people in the field and related links. Paleoecology; Paleontology/Jurassic; Fossiles This site forms a guide to the fossils of Belgium and northern France, compiled by Denis Hsiung, a Belgian amateur palaeontologist. Topic coverage includes palaeoecology, paleogeography, microfossils, invertebrates, vertebrates and plants with links to related resources and a bibliography. Highlights include a selection of high quality fossil images and associated text with taxonomic and classification details. A site specific search facility is available. This resource is only presented in French and would be of interest to students of all ages and levels. http://ology.amnh.org/paleontology/paleodefinition.html
Paleontology is packed with mysteries about living things such as plants and animals that lived thousands, millions, and billions of years before the first modern humans. To solve these mysteries, paleontologists use fossils. Fossils are the remains or traces of ancient life that are usually buried in rocks. Examples include bones, teeth, shells, leaf impressions, nests, and footprints. This evidence reveals what our planet was like long ago. Fossils also show how animals changed over time and how they are related to one another.
While fossils reveal what ancient living things looked like, they keep us guessing about their color, sounds, and most of their behavior.
Most ancient living things never became fossils. When they died, scavengers ate them, they decayed, or they were worn away by wind and water until they disappeared. Some were destroyed by Earth's heat and pressure. Luckily for us, some living things were preserved as fossils.
Most of the fossils of living things will never be found. They may be buried too deep, or they may be in the parts of the world where no one is digging. Many species probably left no fossils at all. Still, plenty of fossils have been found, and new ones are being discovered all the time. Each year, paleontologists continue to piece together the stories of the past.

How do you know how old a particular fossil is?

What is a fossil?
Fossils are the remains and/or traces of prehistoric life. The critical factor is age. Fossils have to be older than 10,000 years, the generally accepted temporal boundary marking the end of the last Pleistocene glacial event. Fossil remains include bones, teeth, shells, and wood. Fossil traces include footprints, burrows, impressions, molds, casts, and coprolites. How deep do you have to dig to find fossils?
Fossils are found in the sedimentary rock layers in which they were originally buried. So, the question really is, where do these layers occur? The sea cliffs at Torrey Pines State Reserve provide excellent exposures of 48-50 million year old fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks. The fossils in these rocks occur right at the surface because erosion has done the "digging" for us. Other FAQs: Birds Fossils Insects Mammals ... A Fragile Resource
Archaeological, historical and paleontological sites are fragile and a non-renewable resource. They are a legacy of the past which benefit and enrich us all. The conservation and protection of Saskatchewan's heritage is everyone's responsibility. "No person shall excavate, collect or remove objects from, or otherwise alter, damage or destroy a heritage property without a proper ministerial permit." Remember, leave nothing behind in the ravine and take nothing but pictures and memories with you. That way everyone can enjoy their visit as much as you!
Fabulous Fossils
Many well preserved fossils have been found in the Herschel area. The oldest include Nautiloid, a type of long shellfish, that dates to the Ordovician period 505-438 million years ago. More common are fossils of clams and snails dating to the Cretaceous age 144-65 million years ago.
Ancient exposed bones lie on the surface of the ground
During the Cretaceous age a shallow inland sea covered most of what is now Saskatchewan. It was home to marine creatures such as plesiosaurs which were enormous reptiles related to dinosaurs. These giants measured anywhere from 1.8 to 9 metres (10-50 feet) in length. In 1990 and again in 1997, paleontologists conducted excavations, and removed two plesiosaur skeletons estimated to be about 65 million years old. A third skeleton was reburied to protect it. At the Interpretive Centre you can see vertebrae from a plesiosaur and pictures of the excavations, along with other Cretaceous-age fossils.

The first 3 dinosaur fossils led to the recognition of a new group of animals, the dinosaurs.
The first nearly-complete dinosaur skeleton in New Jersey spurs modern paleontology.

People have been finding dinosaur fossils for hundreds of years, probably even thousands of years. The Greeks and Romans may have found fossils, giving rise to their many ogre and griffin legends. There are references to "dragon" bones found in Wucheng, Sichuan, China (written by Chang Qu) over 2,000 years ago; these were probably dinosaur fossils.
Much later, in 1676, a huge thigh bone (femur) was found in England by Reverend Plot. It was thought that the bone belonged to a "giant," but was probably from a dinosaur. A report of this find was published by R. Brookes in 1763. The First Dinosaur Fossil Scientifically Described The first dinosaur to be described scientifically was Megalosaurus . This genus was named in 1824, by William Buckland;

An outstanding and extensive resource. Fossils, Rocks, and Time Presented by the U.S. Geological Survey, this is a complete online edition of the book by Lucy E. Edwards and John Pojeta Jr. It is a superior educational site for younger readers, and helps to put geologic time in perspective. Their illustrated geologic time scale is beautiful (look closely). Other features: explanation and origin of geologic terms; discussions about evolution and the Law of Fossil Succession; diagrams, charts, and photographs; numeric versus relative time scale, and much more. Many adults will find this excellent site useful too. Highly recommended.
