Content
The changes that have recently been experienced by the former USSR are impressive: even the very object of general geographic studies - the Soviet Union - ceased to exist on 1/1/1992, and its disintegration gave birth to at least 15 new independent states. Geography 384 aims to teach students to understand these recent economic and political transitions from a geographic perspective. ÒThe Post-Soviet StatesÓ is an introductory course on topics related to the main geographic features of the former Soviet Union in transition. The key issues are: physical geography, dynamics of population change, ethnic groups and relations, migrations, urbanization and rural landscapes, natural resources, industrial patterns, and political organization. A particular emphasis is on the changing concept of Russia and the former Soviet block in the world development, recent reforms and trends in economic and political spheres, ethnic conflicts, relations between republics, and urban problems. In such a dynamic situation any information becomes out-of-date very quickly. The practical part of this course will, therefore, provide students with techniques for accessing information systems and computer databases and retrieving current data about the republics of the former USSR.

    MAP AND AERIAL PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION
MAPS 1. INTRODUCTION Maps are collected because they provide information about relationships and distributions, particularly spatial relationships, of a very wide range of phenomena. They do this in a vivid graphic form difficult to convey in any other way. They can assist in the understanding of textual matter, and may even be an essential part of the text. Properly interpreted, maps provide a range of information for a wide and various range of users. A map is essentially a portrayal of place, in diagrammatic form, and is second only to the spoken and written word as a means of communicating what places are like. It is considered important that the Collection Development Policy for the map collection should be sufficiently flexible to adapt to changes in teaching programmes and the changing needs of users from various disciplines; should take into account the availability of certain kinds of maps; should take note of space and budget constraints; should allow for the acquisition of differing forms of cartographic materials (maps, charts, atlases, relief models, globes, remotely sensed images, computer produced maps, aerial photographs, etc.); and should allow for the acquisition of materials which will enhance the use of the collection (gazetteers, map indexes, etc.). The main responsibility for maintaining and expanding the map collection rests with the Geography and Geology Subject Librarians, who are responsible to the Group Manager, Science Information Services. The Subject Librarians need to be aware of changes in the information needs of map users and of the availability of new and different types of maps.
