"I came to college to study for an SNC in Forestry, and continued on to pass an HND in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry. By taking advantage of the flexible learning programme I was able to do additional units, which allowed me to go on to gain a BSc in Forestry and Conservation. The decision to go back to full-time education was not an easy one for me, as I am severely dyslexic. But with the understanding and help of the well-trained staff at Inverness College I was able to show my full potential. I even managed to pick up a couple of awards on the way." HUGH WILSON

Realising Ash's Potential (RAP) Project
Why Forestry?
Ireland's landscape has changed much over time with a dramatic reduction in our forest cover. Despite a concerted afforestation programme over the past seventy years Ireland continues to be one of the least forested countries in Europe. With farming under increasing pressure from EU and world marketplace reforms and environmental demands, forestry offers a real and sustainable option. During the past decade over 12,000 farmers had planted a total of 250,000 hectares of forestry. Planting by farmers now accounts for 90% of total afforestation compared to less than 10% in the early 1980's. As it is the farming community that are now primarily responsible for new planting so the profile of the forests being planted is changing. In general, farm forests are smaller holdings of 8-10 hectares (20acs - 25acs) and are often fragmented. More significantly, more and more agricultural lowland is being planted which means more fertile soils, wider species choice and the presence of more hedgerows and old scrub/woodland. This profile presents the opportunity for existing and future farm forestry owners to benefit from a range of practical, economical
