HISTORY History of The School of Renewable Natural Resources Formation of the Department of Watershed Management (Continued from previous newsletter, 1996, Issue I)
In 1957, using the nucleus of forestry courses taught in the range management program, a pre-forestry program was initiated in the College of Agriculture in cooperation with the Departments of Horticulture, Agronomy and Range Management. Also in 1957, the range and forestry staff prepared a proposal for the formation of a separate Department of Range and Forestry. This was submitted to the Dean of Agriculture, Dr. Harold Myers, who submitted it to the President of the University, Dr. Richard A. Harvill. The proposal was rejected.
The range faculty then solicited the support of Mr. Arthur Newton Pack, president of the Charles Lathrop Pack forestry Foundation, in setting up a Wildlands management program at the University of Arizona which would include the range and pre-forestry programs in the College of Liberal Arts. Mr. Pack was receptive to the idea and approached agriculture Dean Harold E. Myers directly with the proposal. As a result of his contact with Dean Myers, Mr. Pack granted the University $120,000 to assist in the formation of a Department of Watershed Management, $100,000 to go toward the establishment of the Department and $20,000 for Pack Fellowships to support plant physiology and root studies in cooperation with the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. The Department of Watershed Management was then established in 1958 from the existing Range Management and the pre-forestry programs in the College of Agriculture. The Wildlife Management program in Biological Sciences, however, was not transferred to the new department at this time.

Preparing for the Forestry Major
Freshman
Michigan State University recommends that high school students undertake a college preparatory program with substantial training in writing. Specifically for regular admission, you are required to complete:
  • four years of English, including instruction and practice in writing
  • three years of mathematics, including completion of intermediate algebra
  • three years of social science with at least one year of history and one year of social science in an area such as sociology, anthropology, economics, geography, government, political science and psychology
  • two years of college preparatory science from the disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science
A student who may not have completed all of the above requirements may still be considered for admission since review is made of the full academic background. Other factors considered in the review of admission applications are:
  • results of American College Test (ACT) or Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
  • high school counselor's or principal's descriptive comments
  • extracurricular activities and honors
  • As an admitted freshman to MSU, you may choose a major preference in either Department of Forestry program of study:

The Forestry Program The common characteristic of foresters is the developed skill in managing forest resources for long-range needs. Wood is a valuable and renewable basic natural resource in America, supporting a forest-products industry that directly and indirectly accounts for nearly eight percent of America's economic activity. Today's increasing social concern for environmental values has given foresters the additional task of managing land to protect and enhance forest wildlife, forest beauty, and water quality. Professional forestry courses include instruction on the identification, geography, and characteristics of tree species (dendrology) and the nutrition, reproduction, growth requirements, and yields of forests (silviculture). Students apply sampling and measuring techniques during the summer camp session at the end of their sophomore year. In addition, courses provide necessary background on the formation and fertility of soils, the management of fish and wildlife, and the regulation of water yields and soil stability. Study of the economic aspects of producing timber, the administration and planning involved in logging and wood use, and the control of forest insect and disease problems round out the basic forestry curriculum.

For Distance learning packages for forestry there is a link below which will be developed in the near future.. The Global Association of Online Foresters (G.A.O.F.) see this approach as the future for much of the training requirements for foresters. This particularly applies to foresters working in remote areas. The GAOF provides this service to help you find out about training courses which can be carried out on-line or as distance learning programmes. It does not at this time provide any guidance on the best providers of this type of training and would hope to get some feedback from you Some courses are even free!!

UAM holds the distinction of having the only school of forestry in the state; our program ranks among the nation's leaders. Our location in southern Arkansas, at the heart of the st ates forestry activity, allows students to rub elbows with professional foresters and land managers and learn first hand what you can't get in any classroom. We are accredited by the Society of American Foresters. Through our B.S. program we'll prepare you to assume positions in both public and private forestry, and to succeed in graduate school.
The forestry major prepares you for a broad range of career opportunities involving the management, utilization or study of forest resources. Unlike coal, iron, oil and gas, forests hold a unique distinction as a renewable resource. Forests and the forest environment provide a diversity of valuable resources, including timber, water, wildlife, range, forage, recreation and wilderness. However, the management and protection of forests for a variety of products and services on a sustained basis require professional foresters who understand the complex ecological, economic and social issues facing natural resource management.
Professional foresters are responsible for growing and harvesting trees while protecting forests against wildfires, insects, diseases, erosion and extremes of weather. Enhancement and protection of wildlife habitat and aesthetic values have become increasingly important in management strategies. Forest managers may be employed with private forestry consulting firms, state or federal agencies such as the Arkansas Forestry Commission and U.S. Forest Service, forest products companies, or other companies (such as oil, gas, and electric utilities) that own large tracts of forest land. Students receiving a degree in forestry also have the option of taking additional courses in biology and wildlife management to provide the expertise they would need for employment with wildlife management agencies.

Associate Dean About Education in the School of Forestry Education in forestry at The University of Montana began in 1913 with the founding of the School of Forestry. Since then, the School has added programs in outdoor recreation, wildlife, and conservation and it has established a national reputation for strong educational programs based on both technical competence and social responsibility. B. S., M. S., M.E.M. and PhD degrees are offered and there are minors in selected areas such as nature and democracy, wilderness studies, and wildlife biology. Present day land management challenges range from intensive resource utilization to organism and ecosystem preservation. Resource professionals need a broad range of talents and perspectives to solve present day problems and quickly adapt to address an even more complex future. Our instructional programs graduate both specialists and broadly trained generalists, all of whom understand the complex interrelationships between resource use and quality of the human environment. All instructional programs emphasize interaction with practicing professionals and opportunities to observe and participate in current field resource management situations. Field trips are offered in many courses. In addition, students obtain intensive field experience through on site course offerings in a camp setting at the Lubrecht Experimental Forest and in other courses.
