The third version is bigger and better. I had taken so many pictures that they no longer fit into my five original categories, or the number of images was to overwhelming for one page. So you will notice sub categories with the usual nature, skyscapes, landscapes, wildlife, flowers, etc. Further additions include new categories like my adventures and links. Within those categories you will find not only new photos, but also more personal info like my resume links web rings , and photos from my summer archaeology adventure . You will also notice more personal info about me in general, most people I have talked to complain that they don't even know my name after visiting the site. Years after the fire, the damage becomes clear
By Alex Kirby
BBC News Online environment correspondent Fires in the Amazon forest are killing more trees than anyone had realised, according to UK scientists. They say the fires have a delayed effect, with trees often dying two or three years after they were damaged. This, they say, could double present estimates of the amount of vegetation lost and carbon dioxide released. This could become more important in the future if climatic patterns change significantly. Carbon emissions during severe El Nino events could be equivalent to 10-12.5% of annual global carbon emissions from fossil fuels
The UEA scientists
The scientists, from the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, UK, report their findings in Ecology Letters. They inspected all standing woody stems of 10 centimetres diameter or more in seven plots measuring 10 by 250 metres spread across 32 square kilometres of forest in the central Brazilian Amazon.

The impact of ozone needs further investigation
By BBC News Online's Jonathan Amos in Boston
Scientists have shown for the first time how fires in the Amazon are making temperatures fall across vast areas of the forest. The fires put masses of tiny particles into the atmosphere which reflect incoming sunlight back out into space. The loss of heating at ground level is leading to an average three Celsius drop in temperatures during the burning season that runs from August to October. But this is only part of the story; the particles are also "drying out" the clouds, reducing precipitation in some regions by as much as 30%. Sun shield Fires in the Amazon are confined to a relatively small area - about 15% has been burnt or cleared for pasture - but the effects of fire pollution can be felt over a much wider area. "The untouched, prime forest covers about 5.5 million square kilometres," Professor Paulo Artaxo, from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, told the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. "We think perhaps as much as a half of that could be being affected by secondary pollution."

Forest Fires
Forest fires can endanger homes and wildlife and take an immense human and financial toll to control. Yet, forest fires are natural and serve an important function in ecosystems. Most tree species evolved to take advantage of fire, and periodic fires contribute to forest health. In the absence of human settlement, fires often move through the forest burning lower branches and clearing dead wood from forest floor. Clearing the clutter from a forest floor, as one site puts it, "kick-starts regeneration by providing ideal growing conditions." It also improves the forest floor as habitat for many species that prefer relatively open spaces to a dense thicket of brush and dead branches. Further, forests in which fires are suppressed often burn much hotter and more dangerously when a serious fire finally breaks out. But it is understandable for people who live near forests and who own forest land to want their property, and their lives, protected from the ravages of fire so these are particularly difficult tradeoffs to make. All About Engineering Projects Forest Fires Types of Engineering involved: Forestry
In Canada, every summer, approximately 9000 fires flare up. They consume about 3 million hectares of trees and vegetation. Because many First Nations communities are in or near forested areas, fires and their control directly impact many Aboriginal people each year.
Wildfires are a part of the Earth's natural process of renewal. They help to recycle dead plant material into the soil; certain plants, especially fir trees, have seeds which are only easily released by the heat of fire. Natural wildfires are usually caused by lightning. In areas where there is large build up of dead vegetation, small contained fires are sometimes deliberately set to prevent larger more destructive fires. Unfortunately, many fires are also caused by human carelessness: campfires left unattended or cigarette butts flicked into the bush can easily and quickly ignite dried vegetation and even tree roots. It is these accidental fires which often cause the most damage.
By themselves wildfires do little damage and burn out quickly. In fact, only 200-300 fires each year will consume more than 200 hectares of forest and wildland. Unfortunately, this 2-3% of fires account for almost 97% of the annual area burned. These fires generally occur in places where a huge amount of dead plant material has built up over a long period of time and provides fuel for an out-of-control inferno.

Remote Sensing of Land/Forest Fires
Fire is traditionally used by the shifting cultivators and small-scale farmers as a tool for clearing land in the Southeast asian region. In recent years, fire has increasingly been used by large plantations to clear land and for conversion of forest into plantations and agricultural land. In time of drought, the fires may go out of control, resulting in severe damage to the forest and the surrounding region. The 1997/98 forest fire episode in Southeast Asia has attracted international attention. The fires which occurred primarily in the Sumatra and Borneo islands and aggravated by the drought due to the El Nino Southern Oscillation phenomenon, resulted in increased aerosol loading (smoke-haze) over the region. The economic damage resulting from the haze has been reported to be in the range of billions of dollars. Millions of hectares of land/forest have been burnt. The environmental impacts of the fires include the loss of biodiversity, loss of forests as carbon sinks and emission of greenhouse gases which may influence the global climatic systems. In response to this situation, daily fire monitoring operation of the region using full-resolution SPOT images has been carried out at CRISP, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Singapore. CRISP has also acquired many SPOT, ERS and RADARSAT images of the areas affected by fires.

Mount Everest Expedition The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), based in Bogor, Indonesia, estimated that the economic loss to Indonesia exceeded U.S. $9 billion and that carbon emissions were high enough to make the country one of the largest polluters in the world. Using remote sensing, satellite imagery, and ground and aerial surveys, a team of German and Indonesian researchers found that the bulk of the roughly 12 million acres (5 million hectares) consumed by fire occurred in timber concessions, plantations, and on land converted to agricultural use and then left fallow.

The facts
Every year, some 45,000 forest fires break out in Europe. Between 1989 and 1993, 2.6 million hectares of woodland were destroyed by fire in the Mediterranean alone. That amounts to an area equal to that of Belgium being struck off the map every five years.
Fires cause considerable damage in terms of loss of life and in environmental terms through the destruction of fauna and flora. They also have serious economic implications: destruction of habitats, forest damage, costs of fire-fighting, and so on.
Most of these fires are caused by man. However, there are many natural factors such as drought, wind speed and topography, which influence the spread of fires and govern their devastating effects.
Action
Fire-fighting is a complicated business. The aim of research is to understand the behaviour of fire and to give decision-makers, technicians, and firemen the tools to enable them to act with the necessary effectiveness and speed.
The European Commission is funding several pilot projects. They are designed to:

Pilot Projects on Forest Fires
Forest fires constitute a recurrent phenomenon in the Mediterranean region. In the past fires may have been a natural phenomenon. This is not the case nowadays. Most fires in the Mediterranean region are caused by human activities. Increasing population growth and population density has posed a heavy pressure on wildland. Other factors such as migration of population from the country to the cities and abandonment of lands have also helped to a more continuos fuel layer that facilitates fire spread. Despite the devastating effects of forest fires on the fragile Mediterranean landscapes, there is a lack of harmonized information on fire occurrence and fire damage at the European scale. This is due to many factors, among them the different definition of forests in Mediterranean countries, and the different methods used to collect information on fire events. SAI activities on forest fires are aimed at obtaining harmonized products for all the European countries. However, the initial focus of the activities is southern Europe, since this is the area most affected by fires in the European Union. Panoramic view of forest fires in Greece in the summer of 1998 Forest fire activities cover the entire fire cycle, examining the variables that may influence fire occurrence and/or spread before the fire, going through fire detection once the fire has started, and mapping the burnt areas and evaluating damages after the fires. Hence, the forest fire activities of the Natural Hazards project comprise three topics:

A semiautomatic method to map forest fires during large periods by means of remote sensing imagery has been developed. This methodology has been applied to the period 1975-1993 and results have been given as a forest fire map series and a fire history map of Catalonia (Northeast of Spain). These maps have been lately converted to vector layers and all results have been integrated into a GIS. The results have been contrasted to independent administration data and commission and omission errors have been evaluated. Fire frequencies and NDVI post-fire values have been used to retrieve valuable information on the fire regime and to evaluate plant regeneration rates in Mediterranean plant communities. GIS tools are being used for further landscape analysis. KEYWORDS: Remote Sensing, MSS, NDVI, fire scars mapping, plant regeneration, fire regimes.
