POSTED JULY 1996. To an increasing number of homeowners, wildfires are a threat to life and limb. But to an increasing number of scientists and land managers, they're a part of nature that can be postponed but not denied. This edition of The Why Files examines the role of fire in natural systems, and the role of science in understanding wildfires. They fought the fires at Yellowstone National Park in 1988, but it didn't do much good. What happened next (Here's a logical starting place.) So what's being done to save them? by David Johnson Of all nature's disasters, forest fires are often considered the most frightening. Moving at lightning speed, giant walls of flames can burn acres of land in just a few minutes. And although technology, including the use of fire-retardant chemicals, has greatly aided the fight against forest fires, they still take an enormous toll. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, 24,421 fires burned 442,575 acres of wild lands from January to the beginning of May 2002. In addition, a severe drought has devastated much of the Great Plains, leaving the area susceptible to forest fires. In 2001, 84,079 separate fires destroyed 3,570,911 acres of land and 731 structures. It cost $542 million to fight these fires.

Despite emergency, forest fires continue in Southeast Asia
    September 26, 1997
Web posted at: 7:05 p.m. EDT (2305 GMT) PEKANBARU, Indonesia (CNN) Far away in the cities, children are told to stay indoors because of the haze. But on the outskirts of this provincial capital, workmen are setting yet more fires to clear rain forest. A L S O :
    Map of the affected area
The fires have sent a deadly haze over large tracts of Southeast Asia, and decimated between 1.2 million and 1.5 million acres in Malaysia and Indonesia. Indonesia declared a state of national emergency on Thursday, after two deaths were blamed on the haze. About 10,000 firefighters from the two nations were combating the fires. Both the German and French governments have offered material assistance, and Canadian firefighting experts brought state-of-the-art firefighting equipment to their Malaysian counterparts. The smog has blanketed parts of Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia, and its haze has extended as far north as the Philippines and Thailand. But even as firefighters rush to the region, some local farmers were still setting fires to clear land for cultivating. Experts say the slash-and-burn farming technique is to blame for the large-scale fires.

More than one million acres were burning today in 11 Western states, the most land on fire at any time in the United States since 1910. Federal officials said today that they were growing increasingly concerned that the situation in Montana, the state hardest hit, might turn more catastrophic, with separate fires beginning to merge.

When the weather is hot, dry or windy, or when thunderstorms occur, there is the danger of forest fire. Forestry fire fighters have developed a system to calculate and distribute fire danger information and provide daily weather reports from more than 1,000 fire danger weather stations throughout the country.
Additionally, the firefighters working with Smokey have expanded the tools they use to reduce and prevent forest fires that can occur under such dangerous conditions. They are using their old 'enemy' fire wisely and under selected conditions to clear forests of debris. These 'friendly' fires not only reduce undergrowth but help many plants reproduce and increase food for wild animals. But, most importantly, planned fires can lessen the possibility of an unplanned wildfire caused by lightning or human carelessness raging out of control.
There are thousands of brave men and women who fight forest fires. They can use water or they can remove the fuel from the fire by cutting down trees or setting small fires to create a fire break. Firefighters' tools are necessarily limited.
