Gerald R. Ford (1913- ), 38th President of the United States, the only President elected neither to the presidency, nor to the vice-presidency. During his brief two and a half year term, he attempted to restore confidence in a government tarnished by the Watergate scandal. Gerald Rudolph Ford was born on July 14, 1913, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was named Leslie Lynch King, Jr. His father, Leslie Lynch King, Sr., and his mother, Dorothy Gardner King, were divorced about two years after his birth. His mother took him to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she met and married Gerald R. Ford, owner of a small paint company. Ford adopted the boy and gave him his name. The child, known as "Jerry", grew up with three younger half brothers. The depression years caused a hardship for the family, and almost wiped out the elder Ford's business. Jerry waited on tables and washed dishes at a local restaurant. A strong boy who excelled in sports, he was named to the all-state team in his senior year of high school. At the University of Michigan, he played center on the undefeated Michigan football teams of 1932 and 1933. In 1935, the year of his graduation, he was selected as a College All-Star. He went on to coach football and boxing at Yale University for five years. In 1938 he began taking law courses, and was in the top third of his class when he received his degree from Yale Law School in 1941. That year he was admitted to the bar and practiced law for a short time before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1942. He saw action in the South Pacific, and on his discharge in 1946 had risen to rank of lieutenant commander.

    Biography
Quote Gerald R. Ford Junior was born in Omaha on 14 July 1913 by the name of Leslie Lynch King. His mother left his father when he was two years old. They moved to Michigan where his mother married Gerald R. Ford Sr., and he adopted his stepfather's name. Ford studied liberal arts in Ann Arbor under an athletic scholarship of football at the University if Michigan. Ford was a very successful football player, but he did not carry the sport any further, because he saw no future in the sport. In the fall of 1935 Ford accepted a position at Yale University as assistant coach, where he later decided to study law. In 1938 he was accepted as a part-time law student on a trial basis, and in 1939 he had the school's permission to study full time. In 1941 he received his law degree as top third of his class. Ford opened a law firm in Grand Rapids with his college buddy Buchen. This firm existed for less than a year, because of the start of the Second World War. In 1942 Gerald Ford enlisted in the army where he had a short military career, and in December 1945 he was discharged as a lieutenant. He returned home where his political career started to take off.

    Speaks Out for Equality
Compiled by GayToday President Ford: Supports gay rights legislation Detroit, Michigan-
Former President Gerald Ford, in an exclusive telephone interview with Deb Price of the Detroit News, http://www.detroitnews.com/ said he'd support federal legislation outlawing job discrimination against gay men and lesbians. Ms. Price's interview was published Monday. Ford, 88, also said he believed the U.S. Government should treat same-sex couples in like manner as it treats opposite-gender couples. Tax and social security benefits, he said, should be the same for either heterosexual or homosexual unions. President Ford was the last Republican head of state to support the Equal Rights Amendment. He comes from a generation of moderate Republicans whose ranks have dwindled dramatically since the Reagan era. "It is heartening to know that Gerald Ford supports equality under federal law for gay and lesbian Americans," said Chad Johnson, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director. "Let's hope that President Bush will follow his wise advice, and stop pandering to the radical right. Instead of taking a few token and quiet actions on gay issues, he should boldly follow the Democratic example to support ENDA and other lgbt rights measures," said Johnson.
