" President Gerald Ford On Lessons From Sport "
February 15, 2000 Kim Elliott, CLP

City of Roswell Sometimes our presidents do have good things to say! Take for example former President Gerald Ford who said, "Of all the lessons we must learn, few are more important than those we learn from exercise and sport. They teach us and protect our health: to respect our own capabilities and those of others; and to accept excellence as our standard of performance." Let us take a closer look at what President Ford meant. President Ford said that exercise and sport are educational in nature. We can learn from them as we do any other academic subject. He first of all says that we must learn the lessons they provide and specifically talks about lessons pertaining to health, self-esteem and our relationship with others. Do we need to learn how to get along with people? How many times do we see workshops and seminars being offered on this topic? There must be a problem in society in this area because so many people seem to have problems in getting along with others! Or, at the very least, that is our perception.

Gerald Ford Sworn-In
On the very day Nixon became the first president to resign the office, Vice-President Ford became the first un-elected president when he was sworn in by Chief Justice Burger in a private ceremony at the White House. After the ceremony, Ford delivered the first speech of his presidency. The speech is mostly remembered today for the line "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over." According to Shadow , a 1999 book by Bob Woodward, Gerald Ford objected to this now famous line. Ford was told that was the one line he had to say and the only part that would be remembered. Right on both accounts.
President Ford's Speech
Mr. Chief Justice, my dear friends, my fellow Americans The oath that I have taken is the same oath that was taken by George Washington and by every President under the Constitution. But I assume the Presidency under extraordinary circumstances never before experienced by Americans. This is an hour of history that troubles our minds and hurts our hearts.

Center for the Study of Intelligence
GERALD R. FORD
(Portrait) Gerald Ford became President after Richard Nixon resigned in August 1974. Ford's experience as a member of the intelligence subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee gave him a deep appreciation of the value of intelligence. Fundamental changes in the way CIA operated occurred during the Ford administration. Congressional oversight of CIA and its operations tightened as a result of the Church Committee hearings in 1975, which investigated alleged CIA misconduct.
"IN THE WORLD IN WHICH WE live, beset by continuing threats to our national security, it is vital that we maintain an effective intelligence and counterintelligence capability. This capability is fundamental in providing the safeguards that protect our national interests and help avert armed conflict. The Central Intelligence Agency has had a notable record of many successes in this field, but by the nature of its operations, such successes and achievements cannot be divulged publicly. "It is essential in this republic that we meet our security requirements and at the same time avoid impairing our democratic institutions and fundamental freedoms. Intelligence activities must be conducted consistently with both objectives."

Gerald R. Ford, 38th U. S. President Gerald Ford's story is an amazing series of events. He was born in Omaha Nebraska, 14 July 1913. He attended the University of Michigan, and later studied law at Yale. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1948 and served there until 1973, 25 years. From 1965 to 1973, he was the House Minority Leader. During this time he had earned a reputation for Integrity. He became the first Vice President to be "chosen" under the provisions of the 25th Amendment. When Nixon resigned as President, Gerald Ford became the 1st unelected President of the United States. It was a strange time. Ford had to administer a government and a country that had just been through the Watergate scandal. In 1976 he was nominated by the Republican Convention for the Presidency, but lost the election to the Democratic challenger, Jimmie Carter from Georgia. Ford's linage is presented here with a simple descent chart that has links to other notable families. Enjoy! Table of Contents Chapter 15 Mail

JIM LEHRER: Mr. President, welcome. PRESIDENT GERALD FORD: Thank you. It's nice to be here... JIM LEHRER: Thank you. We want to go through your experiences with the presidential debates, your own experiences, and then get some comments about the whole debate process generally. You had three debates with Jimmy Carter in 1976, and it was your decision to have these debates. You were the incumbent president. Take me through your decision to do this. JIM LEHRER: Were you comfortable with your abilities as a debater? Did you feel like you were a good debate? PRESIDENT GERALD FORD: I certainly would not categorize myself as an outstanding debater. But I felt with my experience in the Congress of 25+ years, plus my experience in the White House, I had enough background, enough factual information on the issues, that I could handle whatever the questions were and would do, on a comparative basis, well against Governor Carter. JIM LEHRER: How did you prepare for these three debates?
