Ford Conservation Center houses a small exhibit that explores the birth and political history of the thirty-eighth president of the United States. On July 14, 1913, Gerald R. Ford, the only Nebraska native to become president of the United States, was born in the King mansion, which then stood at the corner of thirty-second street and Woolworth Avenue. In 1974 Omaha businessman James M. Paxson purchased the Ford birthsite and developed it as a park. Paxson's philanthropic efforts continued with the purchase of adjoining properties where the Ford Conservation Center was constructed. Gerald R. Ford lived in Omaha for only sixteen days after he was born to Leslie King, Sr. and Dorothy Gardner, in July of 1913. The marriage between his parents lasted only sixteen months. His mother fled the unsuccessful marriage and returned to her family home in Michigan. In December of 1913 she obtained a divorce, and her son's ties to the King familyand to Nebraskawere severed. She remarried and her second husband adopted her small son as Gerald Rudoph Ford, Jr. The exhibit on President Ford's life reestablishes those ties to the state where he was born. The displays of historical artifacts, photographs, video material, and memorabilia trace the highlights of his illustrious career:

President Gerald R. Ford Biography
Gerald Rudolph Ford , the 38th President of the United States, was born Leslie Lynch King, Jr., the son of Leslie Lynch King and Dorothy Gardner King, on July 14, 1913, in Omaha, Nebraska. After his parents' divorce and his mother's 1916 marriage to businessman Gerald R. Ford, he became known as Gerald R. Ford, Jr. Jerry Ford graduated from Grand Rapids (Michigan) South High School in 1931 as an honor student and star performer in football and basketball. He was also active in scouting, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in 1927. He earned spending money by working in the family paint business and at a local restaurant. He continued both his education and athletics at The University of Michigan where he played center on the Wolverine football team and was selected most valuable player by his teammates during his senior year. He received offers from two professional football teams, the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers, but chose instead to take a position as boxing coach and assistant varsity football coach at Yale University during law school. He received his law degree from Yale in 1941, graduating in the top third of his class. During World War II, Ford served in the Pacific as an operations officer aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Monterey. After the war, he returned to law practice in Grand Rapids, where his father was county Republican chairman. In 1948 he married Elizabeth Bloomer Warren, a fashion coordinator for a Grand Rapids department store. They would have four children: Michael Gerald, John Gardner, Steven Meigs, and Susan Elizabeth.

NOMINEE: Anwar Sadat NOMINATED BY: Gerald Ford, former President of the U.S. Anwar Sadat, Egypt's assassinated President, stands as a towering rebuke to anyone who questions whether a visionary leader can change history through the force of his own courage and character. Notwithstanding the huge risks involved, Sadat was dedicated to what he called the "sacred mission" of achieving peace in the Middle East. And by embracing his former enemies during his historic visit to Israel, this courageous Arab head of state transformed the course of events in the region and around the world. Like Gandhi, Sadat taught us that it is possible for human beings to put ideals above self-interest. Also, tragically, like the father of modern India, Sadat died for the cause that he ennobled. ... War Correspondent -ZELDA MORGAN Republican Presidential quotes from Richard M. Nixon to George W. Bush Gerald R. Ford 38th President 1974-1977 Here are some interesting and insightful quotes from Gerald Ford:
“Things are more like today than they have ever been before.” During the Carter-Ford debates, Ford committed a gaffe when he declared that "Eastern Europe was free." "I watch a lot of baseball on the radio." "There are no historic or legal precedents to which I can turn in this matter, none that precisely fit the circumstances of a private citizen who has resigned the presidency of the United States. . . . Many months and perhaps more years will have to pass before Richard Nixon could hope to obtain a fair trial by jury . . . But it is not the ultimate fate of Richard Nixon that most concerns me . . . but the immediate future of this great country . . . . Now, therefore, I, Gerald R. Ford, president of the United States . . . have granted and do grant a full, free and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he . . . has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974." "I am acutely aware that you have not elected me as your president by your ballots, so I ask you to confirm me with your prayers."

Ford was appointed vice-president in December 1973, at a time when Nixon's re-election campaign was already being investigated for dirty tricks, and became president the following August. Ford's visit to Vladivostok in 1974 resulted in agreement with the USSR on strategic arms limitation. He survived two assassination attempts in September 1975. He was defeated by Jimmy Carter in the 1976 election by a narrow margin. He is the only US president never to have been elected as vice-president or president. In August 1999 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

In 1970 he led an unsuccessful attempt to impeach the liberal Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. Ford favored increasing the defense budget, and he usually voted for civil rights legislation. The U-M Board of Regents approved the name change last fall. Engler , U-M President Lee C. Bollinger , U-M Provost Nancy E. Cantor , Ford School Dean Rebecca M. Blank , U-M Regent Rebecca McGowan and recent U-M graduate Omorotimi T. Lewis also are scheduled to speak at the event. Blank says that the name change is important for the School, which is working to expand its current programs and raise its visibility. "It helps us honor Gerald Ford and affirm our commitment to training students who are as committed to public service as he has been," she says. "It also raises the visibility of our School by associating it with one of the University's most prominent alumni and one of the state's most effective politicians." Ford, a 1935 U-M graduate in economics and political science, served as the 38th president of the United States from 1974 to 1977. In December 1973, President Richard Nixon appointed Ford to the vice presidency following the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew. Ford then became president when Nixon resigned in August 1974.

Address by President Gerald R. Ford, May 23, 2001 Introductory Remarks by Senator Trent Lott My colleagues, and our special guests, today we are delighted to have you all here for the our latest edition of the Leader's Lecture Series. We were delayed just a moment because I actually had prepared remarks and they were not here. I did not want to wing this one. Our guest today is someone we certainly all know and love and value so much. Senator Daschle and I were just visiting with him. Looking at his itinerary for just this week, he has been in Boston and New York and Washington; he is going to Palm Springs and Albuquerque. We were concerned he was thinking about another national campaign with a schedule such as that. (Laughter.) But it has been quite a week for our good friend, former President Gerald R. Ford. He received the very distinguished Profiles in Courage Award. Senator Kennedy and I spoke of that. (Applause.) Tonight he will give us some thoughts on his service in the Congress. Then he will go and attend his granddaughter's graduation. What a week. We are honored he would give us this time with him so we could benefit from his thoughts. I have so many memories of Gerald Ford. I hardly know where to begin.
