Food Allergies
You can order a comprehensive food and spice allergy profile from Great Smokies. It is a simple blood test and measures food antibodies. Along with the report you will get a rotation diet with a list of the foods you can eat along with recipes. Dr. Cranton discusses the association of food allergies with CFS on his web site. He recommends a book: Detecting Your Hidden Allergies by William G. Crook, M.D. Professional Books, Inc. $10.95. I ordered the food allergy test from Great Smokies, and it turned up a long list of things I was allergic to. Then I read the above book pp.73 to 90 and it listed practically the same list of forbidden and non-forbidden food s. That was very revealing though. It is up to you whether you get tested for food allergies. But if you have CFS you should read Dr. Cranton's web site

Food Allergies and Sensitivities
By Vicki Koenig, MS, RD, CDN What is a Food Allergy?
Most food allergies produce immediate reactions, occurring within an hour or sometimes minutes of eating the trigger food. These can include hives, muscle cramps, runny nose, sinusitis, earache, watery eyes, eczema or shortness of breath. An allergic reaction can sometimes be life threatening. For example, the swelling can occur in the throat, closing the airway and making it difficult or impossible to breathe. Adults usually do not lose their allergies, but children can sometimes outgrow them. Children are more likely to outgrow their allergies to milk or soy, but usually not their allergies to peanuts, shrimp or fish. And, it is possible to develop new food allergies in your adult years. Diagnosis of food allergies is fairly easy and certain. A blood test called a RAST or ELIZA can detect the presence of a specific IgE and identify the allergic food(s). It cannot however, pick up the presence of other immunoglobulins, like Immunoglobulin G (IgG), which is associated with delayed allergic reactions. A Delayed Allergic Reaction or Food Sensitivity

Food Allergies could explain your symptoms
90% of food allergies are due to gluten and dairy products. It is well worth everyone cutting these out of your diet for a week. Failing that, keep a diary of when you consume them and notice if any problems consistently occur in the next 6 hours. Not all allergies have obvious effects. I have a long-running back problem which improved tenfold when I stopped eating gluten. Nor are allergies necessarily permanent. I managed to cure my own gluten allergy using timeline therapy (crazy huh?). There is also an NLP Allergy Cure which works somewhat like the Fast Phobia Cure Minor allergies can become much worse if our immune system is weakened. Allergy testing can be quite expensive and I'm not sure if anyone has tested its validity. Donna Eden's book, Energy Medicine, describes energy testing, where you would eat, or simply smell various foods, and after each, somebody would attempt to pull your arm away from your side. The more easily this happens, the worse a food is for you. Please rate this page, 10 being best

Gina:
Carol, what's the relationship of the allergies to rheumatoid arthritis?
Dr. Henderson:
Allergies and food sensitivities or intolerances sometimes get pulled together and oftentimes an elimination diet is something that can be implemented in order to pare out what might be causing these allergies or food sensitivities. Now, I wanted to go on to explain exactly what that means an elimination diet and to underscore the fact that it's important to have a trained healthcare professional a physician, a dietitian to oversee this elimination diet. To begin, an elimination diet typically takes several months to do appropriately. It's conducted by eliminating or pulling out the diet foods that are thought to cause food allergy or intolerance and then over the course of time once you've seen an outcome in terms of if it improves disease symptoms or whatever, then they would reintroduce that and see if the symptoms return. So, it's done in a very systematic, scientific way in a fairly controlled manner, and so it's important if you want to implement this type of an elimination process to pare out what foods might be giving one problems, to do it in a very specific way and not just by happenstance in order to really be able to determine the outcome and be able to interpret those results.

Allergies: Quackbusters Chronicle Volume 2 No 4
NOTICE: The Quackbusters Chronicle Volume One e-book i s now available! This contains all of the first year's chronicles and more. Myth: Allergies and food intolerances cannot be controlled or managed through diet. Fact: An allergy or intolerance is a hypersensitive reaction of our body to an otherwise harmless substance that triggers an inappropriate response of our immune system. When our immune system is challenged it can either take the immune pathway where it will destroy the invader, or take the allergic pathway, which is a bit like involving the whole neighbourhood in a petty household squabble. The most common allergens are chiefly the pollens; pet fur; dust mites; house moulds; stinging insects; medicines; and some foods, particularly those laced with food colourings and the like. Allergens can behave in much the same way as pirates invading a ship. Some of the additives found in processed foods, especially artificial colourings, will take this primary allergic response a step further by triggering an asthma attack in susceptible people. Our susceptibility to particular allergens is determined largely by hereditary factors. If the allergic response to a bee sting is enough to kill us if we don't get a quick shot of anti-histamine, we needn't be surprised to find our kids in the same plight if they are stung by an irate bee. The first sting can sensitise; the second can overwhelm.

Does your dog have Food Allergies?
If you knew the ingredients in commercial dog food you wouldn’t feed it to a dog, let alone your best friend. West Highland White Terriers are known for having food allergies. I know most of the Westies on the block (it’s a big block) and most of them have some kind of stomach problem or skin allergies. I have two West Highland White Terriers. Spooky and Elle. Elle is one year old, strong and naturally healthy but Spooky has had problems since he was a small puppy. With vomiting, diarrhea and blood in his stools I visited different vets every few months.
Food Allergies? After $1200.00 dollars in examination, x-rays and drugs, they all told me that it was probably a food allergy because they couldn’t find anything wrong in the blood work or examination. They sent me home with a special diet of “Duck and potatoes”, “Venison and potatoes” and finally “Salmon and potatoes”. Nothing worked so they switched me to a hypoallergenic dog food at an exorbitant price. Still my Spooky-boy would loose his appetite, refuse to eat and vomit bile. I was frantic so I finally went to see a vet in San Mateo who told me Spooky had Colitis along with food allergies. We kept him on the anti-allergy formula but added bran to his diet. He improved and started eating more, gained weight and looked happier. Westies with food allergies like these are all too common. We hope we can give you some hints on how to keep your Westie or any other dog with food allergies in tip top form.

FOOD ALLERGIES
RARE BUT RISKY
Do you start itching whenever you eat peanuts? Does seafood cause your stomach to churn? Symptoms like these cause millions of Americans to suspect they have a food allergy. But true food allergies affect a relatively small percentage of people: Experts estimate that only 2 percent of adults, and from 2 to 8 percent of children, are truly allergic to certain foods. Food allergy is different from food intolerance, and the term is sometimes used in a vague, all-encompassing way, muddying the waters for people who want to understand what a real food allergy is. "Many people who have a complaint, an illness, or some discomfort attribute it to something they have eaten. Because in this country we eat almost all the time, people tend to draw false associations between food and illness," says Dean Metcalfe, M.D., head of the Mast Cell and Physiology Section at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
ALLERGY AND INTOLERANCEDIFFERENT PROBLEMS
The difference between an allergy and an intolerance is how the body handles the offending food. In a true food allergy, the body's immune system recognizes a reaction-provoking substance, or allergen, in the foodusually a proteinas foreign and produces antibodies to halt the "invasion." As the battle rages, symptoms appear throughout the body. The most common sites are the mouth (swelling of the lips), digestive tract (stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea), skin (hives, rashes or eczema), and the airways (wheezing or breathing problems). People with allergies must avoid the offending foods altogether.

Diet for gluten intolerance

Gluten intolerance also goes by the name of coeliac disease. There are various definitions of what gluten intolerance is, but the average definition describes it as a malabsorption syndrome precipitated by the ingestion of the gluten protein found in wheat products, known as "gliadin". Cow's milk allergy
"Cow's milk protein" allergy is an allergic reaction to proteins commonly found in cow's milk. It is one of the most common food allergies in children, perhaps because it is usually the first foreign protein encountered by infants.

Food Allergy and Intolerance
One man's meat is another man's poison is an old saying that could not be truer than from a nutritionist's point of view. Most people can make wheat products their staple diet. But some rare individuals end up with vomiting or diarrhoea when they consume wheat. Such adverse reactions are produced either by the immune system (causing allergic reactions) or by the gastrointestinal system (leading to intolerance).
Food Allergy describes the adverse effects brought about by immunological reactions in people sensitive to certain food components (allergens) which are usually proteins. This is also known as Food Sensitivity and is not to be confused with food intolerance where the mechanism is non-immunological.
Everybody absorbs some large molecules like proteins, whole. The body's immune system removes these foreign substances (antigens) by producing antibodies that form antigen/antibody complexes. These are metabolised by the liver and in most people cause no reactions.
In some, however, they cause allergic reactions either immediate or delayed, through the allergen antibody complex, leading to a release of histamine from mast cells. (An allergen is an antigen that causes allergic reactions). Symptoms may be gastrointestinal - vomiting or diarrhoea. For example, this could be a reaction to the gluten in wheat. Symptoms could also be general - eczema, edema, urticaria, and asthma. For example, this could be caused by a reaction to eggs, strawberries, shellfish. This could also cause rheumatoid arthritis. Classical antigens include egg, fish, shellfish, wheat, nuts, and cow's milk (one percent of infants could be allergic to this).

http://www.holistic-online.com/Remedies/Sleep/sleep_narc_diet_restriction.htm
Home Alternative Medicine Stress Management Conditions/ Treatments ... Media Sleep Narcolepsy Diet Restriction Narcolepsy may be the result of food intolerances. There have been some documented cases in which persons who suffered from narcolepsy were cured by eliminating allergenic foods from the diet. One person, for instance, was found to have an allergy to potatoes. When he removed potatoes from his diet, he no longer experienced the symptoms. To determine if your are allergic to any food and if that is causing narcolepsy, start restricting your diet to single foods. If that prevents the reoccurrence of narcolepsy, then one can reasonably conclude that the particular food item is "safe to use." Now add another food. Ultimately you will discover the offending food and that should be avoided. The most common foods that people are sensitive to are dairy products, wheat, corn, and chocolate. Does Your Dog Have An Allergy?
There's more to it than just lamb and rice! Does my dog have a food allergy?
The most common sign of a food allergy in dogs is itchy skin. Assuming you've checked your dog for fleas as soon as she started scratching, you might also want to look for a rash. If you see a severe rash—or you suspect the scratching has been going on for some time—you might want to schedule a trip to the vet.
Will my vet tell me to switch dog food brands?
Well, it's not quite that simple. If your dog's condition is caused by a food allergy, the offending food "allergen" is usually a protein and may be present in many commercial diets. Your vet is most likely to prescribe a plan that is designed to help identify the offending ingredient.
The plan works like this:
Feed food that consists of at most two ingredients (probably a therapeutic "hypoallergenic" diet). Internal Links
