Infant Allergies Once babies are ready to eat solid foods, parents often become concerned about food allergies. A food allergy is an allergic reaction to a particular food. In addition to food allergies, your baby may also experience food intolerance. Food intolerance is not an allergic reaction, but it is any other undesirable effect experienced as a result of eating a particular food. Allergies may manifest from something in the air, something that touches the skin, or from a certain kind of food i Common questions asked by parents such as, what symptoms will my baby show if he/she has food allergies, what precautionary measures should be taken and how can I track down food allergies, will be addressed in the section below. The following is a list of signs and symptoms often caused by food allergies or intolerance:
Runny nose (with clear secretions), watery eyes, seasonal sneezing and wheezing Chronic cough Circles under eyes Frequent colds and/or ear infections Frequent skin rashes, such as eczema or hives Night coughs and a stuffy nose in the morning Diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating

About Food Allergies
While an estimated 40 to 50 million Americans have allergies, only one to two percent of all adults are allergic to foods or food additives. Eight percent of children under age six have adverse reactions to ingested foods; only two to five percent have confirmed food allergies. The following information addresses commonly asked questions regarding food allergy. What are symptoms of food allergy?
Allergic reactions to foods typically begin within minutes to a few hours after eating the offending food. The frequency and severity of symptoms vary widely from one person to another. Mildly allergic persons may only suffer a runny nose with sneezing, while highly allergic persons may experience severe and life-threatening reactions, such as asthma or swelling of the tongue, lips or throat. The most common symptoms of food allergy involve the skin and intestines. Skin rashes include hives and eczema. Intestinal symptoms typically include vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, indigestion and diarrhea. Other symptoms can be asthma, with cough or wheezing; rhinitis, often including itchy, stuffy, runny nose and sneezing; and rarely, anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that may be life threatening. Because these symptoms can be caused by a number of different diseases other than food allergy, your allergist-immunologist may want to examine you to rule them out as the source of your problem.

NAMASTE AND WELCOME TO THIS MONTH'S WAY UP NEWSLETTER And it's going to be a long one, for there is no other way to even begin to tackle the topic of food allergies. Though generally not life threatening, food reactions are among the most consistent factors I have seen interfering with the quality of life for the majority of my patients over 32 years of medical practice. FOOD ALLERGY/SENSITIVITY SYMPTOMS Allergy/hypersensivity reactions can mimic numerous other conditions as well. There are many predisposing factors for allergy, such as a family history of allergies, untoward exposure to chemicals triggering a hyperimmune response, chronic yeast overgrowth or other infections, mercury or other toxic metal overload, digestive malfunction of many varieties, prematurity at birth, auto-immune disorders, to name only a few. by Milly Miller Bobby was born on November 28, 1980. We named Bobby - King Robert Revere. He is an absolute joy. At 16 ½ years old he is in extremely good health and the vet says he is a perfect example of a dog who is loved very well. That tells it all. We have treated him and cared for him as if he were a child in this family. When he was about 6 we started having terrible problems with his skin, he had weeping sores, he was loosing hair and he chewed and scratched himself constantly. We found a vet who specialized in allergies and he began treating him for a flea allergy. Here in Florida we do have a serious flea population. Well the cortisone injections would help for a little while then he would get a secondary infection and he would be on antibiotics and then he would start itching again. It was a vicious cycle and his health was really failing, rapidly. It is fortunate that Maltese is a smaller breed because I had to cook for Bobby. I prepared chicken, potatoes and green beans for him. That is another story completely. It took awhile to get the proportions down to the point that he was getting a good nutrition level and not too much protein but we did it and his health and his skin and finally his coat began to show improvement. This photo was taken when he was 14 yrs old. Today he looks pretty much the same but I keep his hair short now to cause him less stress with the maintenance of it. Oh, by the way, that allergy test cost $155.00.

A hedgehog may develop certain environmental allergies, including sensitivities to chemicals or even food allergies. Shown at left is Knarla Pog , a hedgehog with possible food allergies. Symptoms of food allergies include:
  • Red, puffy, flaky, and/or scabby patches on the face and/or feet Excessive itching Patches appear and disappear frequently
Knarla's vet suspects that she may have a condition called eosinophilic granuloma, which is most commonly seen in cats. The food allergies do not necessarily occur after a change of diet; rather, they are a result of continued exposure to a food substance. Meat proteins, corn, soy, milk proteins and wheat are frequent culprits, but not the exclusive ones. In Knarla's case, the culprit could be crickets or waxworms!

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Food allergies or food intolerances affect nearly everyone at some point. People often have an unpleasant reaction to something they ate and wonder if they have a food allergy. One out of three people either say that they have a food allergy or that they modify the family diet because a family member is suspected of having a food allergy. But only about three percent of children have clinically proven allergic reactions to foods. In adults, the prevalence of food allergy drops to about one percent of the total population.
This difference between the clinically proven prevalence of food allergy and the public perception of the problem is in part due to reactions called "food intolerances" rather than food allergies. A food allergy, or hypersensitivity, is an abnormal response to a food that is triggered by the immune system. The immune system is not responsible for the symptoms of a food intolerance, even though these symptoms can resemble those of a food allergy.
It is extremely important for people who have true food allergies to identify them and prevent allergic reactions to food because these reactions can cause devastating illness and, in some cases, be fatal.

Allergies (Food)
Hello, I am wondering which foods, if any, contain antihistamine. I am allergic to ragweed pollen. Sniff!! Sniff!!
The foods we consume do not contain antihistamine. FYI, Antihistamines are prescriptions you can take to interrupt your body's production of histamines in response to allergens in the environment. However, diet can still play an important role in controlling allergic reactions. A healthy, balanced diet that follows the recommendations of the Food Guide Pyramid is the first key to defending your body against allergic reactions. A healthy body is more resistant to attack, whereas stress, poor diet, insufficient sleep, emotional trauma, and infection can predispose your body to allergic reactions. More specifically, vitamin C and vitamin E can help protect your body. Vitamin C will boost your immune system and is found in citrus foods such as oranges, grapefruit, orange juice, grapefruit juice, green peppers and many beverages. Vitamin C acts similar to an antihistamine. Vitamin E is found in plant oils and green, leafy vegetables. With allergies in mind, the best diet to follow is one with plenty of carbohydrates and fresh fruits and vegetables. Hopefully the next frost will bring you relief from your allergies!

THE ELIMINATION DIET
The Elimination Diet is an important diagnostic TOOL for finding food allergies. In many cases today, allergic symptoms such as postnasal drip, sinus problems, frequent ear infections and allergic rhinitis may be the result of a person's allergic response to foods, just as readily as the environmental allergens. An allergy-free diet has two important components: 1 - identify the specific food allergen(s) in the diet, and 2 - attempt to monitor and maintain minimal allergic symptoms on a day-by-day basis. To begin the diet: Eliminate one food group at a time (usually starting with dairy).
  • Before starting the elimination diet be physically and psychologically prepared. It may not be easy to complete the two weeks necessary determine food sensitivities.
  • Follow the diet for at least two to three weeks to become symptom-free. Why? Because foods that we eat today may still be in our system one week from now, but not necessarily two weeks. Two weeks is usually sufficient time to "get out" the possible allergic food from our body. Allergies are very non specific and we are not sure if a little or a lot of a certain food can produce symptoms. Getting the food totally out of the body is the best means of detecting the allergen.

He scratches and chews at his skin. Someone recommended that we add vegetable oil to his food to rule out dry skin. We did that and he scratched himself raw, so we know that he is definitely allergic to soy (oil). Food allergies in dogs are very common and very frustrating to diagnose and treat. As of now, there are no reliable tests for food allergies in dogs. We can successfully test for inhalant or environmental allergies, such as dust mites or pollens, with blood tests or patch tests similar to those done for humans. We can only test for food allergies by doing dietary trials and eliminating a suspected food source from the pet's diet. Dogs can be allergic to more than one food source; commonly 2-3 food sources are to blame. The most common sources for causing food-related dermatitis are beef and soy. Usually dogs that have food allergies are also allergic to other things such as fleas, molds, or grasses. If you see that Copper is allergic to 10 things and two of those are in his diet, you may actually help stop his scratching by eliminating just those two even if the other eight allergens remain in his environment.

    1. What happens in the body during a food-allergic reaction?
The immune system mistakenly believes that a harmless substance, in this case a food item, is harmful. In its attempt to protect the body, it creates specific IgE antibodies to that food. The next time the individual eats that food, the immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals and histamines in order to protect the body. These chemicals trigger a cascade of allergic symptoms that can affect the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, or cardiovascular system.
    2. What are the common symptoms of a reaction?
Symptoms range from a tingling sensation in the mouth, swelling of the tongue and the throat, difficulty breathing, hives, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, drop in blood pressure, loss of consciousness, to death. Symptoms typically appear within minutes to two hours after the person has eaten the food to which he or she is allergic.

A food allergy is an abnormal hypersensitive reaction that occurs after eating a normal amount of a certain food. The reaction is repeated every time the food in question is eaten.
Although food allergies are rare, they most commonly occur in children under the age of four.

After that, you can look to see if your health improves. Keep a diary recording what you eat and how you feel. Try a rare foods diet to test if you are allergic to some of the foods that you regularly eat. This means eating only foods that you eat less than once a week. The theory is you are most likely to develop allergies to foods you eat all the time and you are probably not allergic to foods you only eat once in awhile. For two weeks you must give up all foods you regularly eat. To identify these foods you have to identify every ingredient of all foods in your normal diet.

People with food intolerances can sometimes consume small portions of the problematic food. For instance, those with lactose intolerance can usually drink one or two glasses of milk a day. Milk is easier to digest with a meal. In addition, some high-calcium dairy foods, such as hard cheeses and yogurt, seem to cause fewer symptoms of lactose intolerance. People with food allergies are usually advised to avoid the food completely. This is particularly important for people with severe allergic reactions. These people can develop a severe reaction after ingesting even a tiny amount of the offending food. For instance, 1/44,000 of a peanut may trigger a reaction in severely allergic people. Additional Strategies for Parents of Children with Food Allergies Tips for Avoiding Problem Foods
    • Find out exactly what you need to avoid. People who are allergic to shrimp often are allergic to other types of shellfish, such as crab and lobster. In contrast, people with peanut allergies can usually consume peanut oil safely. That's because the protein in peanuts that typically causes allergies gets removed when peanut oil is made.
    • Ask your doctor for a complete list of ingredients that you need to avoid. If you need to avoid eggs, you should also avoid foods listing albumin, or egg white, in their ingredients. If milk makes you sick, watch out for products that contain casein, sodium caseinate, lactoglobulin, and nougat.
