Florida
Project Description: The state is now developing a comprehensive plan to sustain support for meeting the goals of Starting Points and to measure progress effectively. To deepen the understanding of business leaders, the media, and the general public of the importance of prevention programs, the Florida project team will undertake a statewide public education and social indicators project. The project will conduct surveys of public opinion on children's issues, train representatives of child advocacy organizations in media and communications skills, and convene seminars on child health, child care, and family support policies in areas of the state where young children's needs are greatest. A social indicators project based on an adaptation of the 1995 Kids Count Data Book will create benchmarks for meeting young children's needs and will disseminate information to policymakers and the news media on the state's progress toward these benchmarks. To assist the growing number of working parents who need high-quality child care, the project will sponsor a conference for leading employers to expand child care services and other family friendly policies, and expand parent involvement on child care programs statewide. The Center for Educational Enhancement and Development at Florida State University manages the initiative. Two other nationally recognized organizations, the Florida Center for Children and Youth and the Florida Children's Forum, will oversee the public education and child care work. Both internal and external communications about Florida's Starting Points initiatives will be enhanced through technology used to implement an e-mail and bulletin board capacity and multimedia presentation. Funds from the A. L. Mailman Family Foundation and state grants match Carnegie's support.

Governor Jeb Bush created the Governor's Family Literacy Initiative for Florida, providing literacy grants to public and private non-profit education and community organizations across the state. Verizon Communications is a partner in this initiative, providing financial support for the grant program.
"As Governor of this state, one of my top priorities has been to establish initiatives that will help Florida's most vulnerable citizens," Governor Bush said. "Helping parents improve their basic skills has a direct and measurable impact on both the education and quality of life for their children. These grants will help to strengthen the critical role of parents in their children's education."
The Family Literacy Initiative was launched in 1999 as a regional program, and in 2001 became available statewide. The program is a partnership among the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, the South Florida Annenberg Challenge, the Florida Literacy Coalition and Florida educators that will bring the benefits of literacy to families throughout the state. The initiative will award over $1 million in family literacy grants of up to $50,000 each, to public and private non-profit education and community organizations.

Caring For an Elder Who Are Caregivers?

A recent Department of Elder Affairs survey of caregivers found that about half of caregivers provide care for a spouse while the other half are children or other relatives caring for a parent or loved one. As our nation's population ages, more and more Americans face the challenges of providing care to loved ones who need help because of chronic illness or disability. Where Can Caregivers Go for Help?
While it is true that accepting the responsibility of caregiving requires perseverance, it is important for caregivers to find support in meeting the everyday challenges and stress of caregiving. Connecting with other caregivers can help prevent isolation and encourage good mental and physical health. The Department of Elder Affairs sponsors an excellent on-line resource for caregivers and their families. The Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Online (http://www.alzonline.net/) website provides specific resources and tools to help caregivers care for their loved ones. Together with our partners at the Area Agencies on Aging and local service providers, we are committed to providing the kind of support that allows families to care for their older loved ones while maintaining a healthy life for themselves. Our RELIEF, Senior Companion Program and AmeriCorps respite programs help caregivers get the time they need to away from their caregiving roles.
