You can fall back on these resources when "hard times" hit when you are unsure about a provision of the notary law when you have an unusual request for notary services when you just need to refresh your memory about your powers, responsibilities, duties, and limitations as a notary public. The general public can also make withdrawals from our bank when they are curious about the functions of a notary public. You may be wondering why the State of Florida has two offices which are involved with the appointment of notaries public. The functions of these two offices are totally different. The Governor's Notary Section was established in July 1992 after the Legislature appropriated funds to educate and assist notaries public. Because notaries are public officers appointed and commissioned by the Governor, the Notary Section is part of the Executive Office of the Governor, Legal Affairs. The main function of the Notary Section to educate and assist notaries is accomplished in several ways: by publishing and distributing educational materials, particularly the notary laws, a semi-annual newsletter called

Education chief proposes audit of school safety A spokesman for the state's school board says many districts are already taking steps included in the bill. Tallahassee - March 13, 2001 - Education Commissioner Charlie Crist wants lawmakers to require all school districts to undergo safety and security audits. The $4 million cost for the audits would be a small price to pay to ensure the safety of children and teachers, Crist said Monday. "This legislation is an effort to make sure that all of Florida's children and teachers are safe," Crist said. The measure, still being drafted, calls for safety audits by independent examiners under contract with the state. The audits would look at programs that promote safety and incidents of school violence and would include parental input. There were more than 180,000 reports of crime and violence in Florida schools during the 1999-2000 school year, according to the state Department of Education.

All undergraduate students (except those transferring to UF with an AA from a Florida public community college or an AA from a Florida public state university) are required to complete the 36-hour General Education requirement to graduate. Common collective knowledge about the world enables us to communicate, to make informed decisions about many aspects of our lives, to understand and to participate fully as informed citizens in local, national and global matters. By attaining competency in composition, the humanities, physical and biological sciences, mathematics and social and behavioral sciences, we can better understand ourselves, our neighbors, other cultures and times, and the principles governing the natural world and the universe. In general education courses, students gain fresh perspectives, methods and tools for understanding the traditional and the newly discovered. The general education program requires courses in the following areas: Area Credits Composition (C) Mathematical Sciences (M) * Humanities (H) Social and Behavioral Sciences (S) Physical (P) and Biological (B) Sciences International /Diversity Focus (I)- 6 credits taken in conjunction with H, S, P or B

General Education Requirements at UF- www.cba.ufl.edu/publications/gened/gened.htm
Do you have all the proper general education credits assigned to you? UF requires those listed below, but your individual college's major will often require more credits in addition to UF's gen ed requirements. Check with your college to make sure you meet their requirements! Here are the minimum credit hours that UF requires:
    3 Composition (C); 6 Mathematics (M); 9 Humanities (H); 9 Social and Behavioral Sciences (S); 9 Physical and Biological (P or B); 6 International Diversity (I)
It is important that you follow up with your computer-assigned credits after the semester, as mistakes sometimes do occur! Your best bet to make sure there was no mistake with your case is to check on your tracking audit on ISIS for up-to-date gen ed credits assigned.
Many Honors classes may offer more than one general education credit (the same class may count as a "C" or an "H," for example). A student may then CHOOSE which ONE credit they want their class to count for. One class may not count for multiple gen ed credits, except for "I" credits, which may be combined with one other credit. For example, a student may earn a "C, I" or an "H, I" for a class, but not a "C, H."

    • Florida’s adult general education programs are operated by school districts and community colleges. Both community colleges and school districts improved their performance in terms of the number of literacy completion points earned by students between 1998-99 and 1999-00. Yet, school district placement rates are low for adult basic and English for Speakers of Other Languages programs. School districts and community colleges have acted to improve their adult general education programs, including strengthening student retention efforts. Some of the apparent performance improvement could reflect better record keeping in tracking student progress. Although the state’s performance funding initiative is a key aspect of improving student outcomes, department guidelines for assessing student progress leading to outcomes are not being consistently applied by the institutions.
