    Marine Life
    1. What is bioluminescence?
Fireflies sparking on a summer's evening; jellyfish glowing in night waters. These are examples of bioluminescence: light produced by living plants and animals from a biochemical reaction to oxygen. The majority of bioluminescent marine creatures are planktonic organisms found in huge groups that will glow in the wake of swimming fish or passing ships. Phosphorescent Bay in Puerto Rico has an extremely heavy concentration of these bioluminescent organisms. Bioluminescence was once confused with phosphorescence because it was believed the light was caused by the element phosphorus.
    2. How many different species of ocean fish exist?
The total number of species of ocean fish ranges from 15,000 to 40,000 with the figure of 25,000 most often cited. There are several reasons for the discrepancy. Some fish species have not yet been named while others are often named more than once because of inadequate descriptions and variations in geographical distribution.

Is life found at all depths in the ocean?
The question was settled in 1960, when Piccard and Walsh reported a swimming animal, resembling a sole or other flatfish about a foot long, at 35,800 feet deep, observed from a porthole of the bathyscapne Trieste. Some scientists believed, as recently as 1860, that marine life could not exist below 1,800 feet. That view was altered when a telegraph cable laid in the ocean bottom at 6,000 feet deep was retrieved and found covered with many forms of marine life.

Which is the oldest fish, as a class?
The most primitive fish-like animals are those with sucking mouths, such as lampreys and hagfishes , whose evolution stopped short of the development of biting jaws. Mainly bottom-dwellers, these animals are of great interest to zoologists, for many parts of their bodies show forms and functions that help to explain some of the evolutionary steps leading from low to advanced life forms.

Life in the Southern Ocean Factfile Life in the Southern Ocean
    Fish
A further area of sea-life that exists in the Southern Ocean is the fish. There are over 80 species, virtually all living at the bottom of the Ocean. Antarctic cod, which is found in the deep water and can be eaten by humans, is one of the most common.
The fish have cleverly adapted to survive in the cold environment. They have a protein in their blood and body tissues that acts like an anti-freeze. This chemical is like an antibody to any ice crystals. As they try to form, it wraps them up, preventing them from growing. By stopping the growth of ice crystals, the blood and tissues are prevented from freezing in the cold temperature.
The Antarctic Ice Fish has adapted in this way, but is also special in that its blood is almost translucent. The missing red blood cells usually carry the haemoglobin, which transports oxygen around the body. Without them, the thickness of the blood is reduced and the energy used up circulating the blood is lower. The Ice Fish can therefore conserve more of its energy. Also, despite a lack of red blood cells, the Ice Fish survives well, probably due to the fact that cold water has more oxygen dissolved in it than warmer waters.
Other types of fish present in the Southern Ocean include the Patagonian toothfish, which can grow a to a couple of metres in length.

It replaces our 1998 edition of the Audubon Guide to Seafood published in Audubon magazine. We continuously evaluate fisheries and update our seafood rankings as needed. The Flow Below
Diversity of Fishes in the Deep Blue
In celebration of Year of the Ocean, in the next few Flow Belows we will explore the dazzling diversity of form, function, and adaptation among the wild creatures that call the oceans their home. Think of the world's hotspots of biological diversity. Do the open oceans come to mind? Probably not. Most likely you're thinking about tropical rainforests, maybe coral reefs. Few have suggested that the open oceans, considered the birthplace of life on Earth, rival terra firma for species diversity. Until recently. Current exploration of the deep sea floor is uncovering so many new creatures that scientists have had to readjust their biodiversity tally sheets. They now estimate that there may be more than 10 million, and perhaps up to 100 million, species inhabiting the seas. Maybe this should not be so surprising given how long evolution has had to paint the canvas of ocean life and the fact that the oceans cover 71percent of Earth's surface. We landlubbers are just beginning to overcome our terrestrial bias as we gain the technological ability to plumb the depths of the seas and record the amazing wealth of life that they harbor. How do you spell evolutionary success? F-I-S-H! As a result of their 470-million-year evolution, the fishes account for more than half of all living vertebrates. That means there are more fish species on Earth than all mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians combined. Over 24,000 fish have been named, and about 60 percent of these live in the salty seas.

What Lives at the Bottom of the Ocean. . .?
As long as people have inhabited earth, they have relied on the ocean for food, industry, and recreation. Many years ago, humans were satisfied with the sea life and resources that lived near the shore and were readily accessible to humans. But, as times have changed and technology has evolved, people have become very curious about what types of creatures live at the bottom of the ocean. This unknown frontier presents a new challenge to scientists and oceanographers.
    The Task
You are an oceanographer who is interested in uncovering the mysteries that lie at the bottom of the ocean. In order to do so, you decide to travel to these deep depths and search for yourself. However, upon resurfacing, many scientists and the press what to know the following about your journey:
    • How much pressure is at the bottom of the ocean?
    • What are the depths at which people and various fish can survive?
    • What strange sea life did you encounter? Did they have any unique/strange features?
    • What types of food did all the fish eat?

A Fangtooth - scientists still aren't exactly sure why so many bony fishes of the deep have such enlarged, daggerlike teeth.
These are the creepy crawlies and monsters of the deep you've been waiting to see. Starting with the first really deep ocean zone - the Mesopelagic Life in the Deep Many species of deep ocean fish have special adaptations to living in extremely high pressure, low light conditions. Viper fish (Mesopelagic - found at 80-1600 meters - about a mile down) are some of the most wicked looking fish dredged up from the depths. These fish have adapted to take advantage of the sparse food supply of the deep in some amazing ways. Some of them are black as night all over to blend in with the constant darkness - a form of camouflage. They also have light organs (called photophores ) in strategic places on their bodies, including one on a long dorsal fin that serves as a lure for the fish it preys upon. These light organs create lights by using a chemical process called
