Blowfish Wild Things - Puffer Fish: Delicacy Worth Dying For?
Some puffer fish look a little bit like a beagle dog without the ears. Don't let looks fool you. Their four large teeth - two on top, two on the bottom - are sharp enough to sever a finger. Several species also have spikes sticking out of their skin. When it becomes alarmed, a puffer fish puffs itself up with water or air and makes a squeaky noise. There are about 120 species of puffer fish or blowfish, globefish and fugu as they are also called. They grow up to 50 cm (20 in) long. They can puff themselves up because they have elastic skin and no ribs. Puffer fish live in the tropical and subtropical parts of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. They blend in with coral and prefer to stay near the bottom of the ocean where they can feed on molluscs and crustaceans. Sharks tend to eat puffer fish and so do humans. Eating fish isn't unusual except Angry Puffer Fish puffer fish are fatally poisonous. In Japan they are a delicacy after the poison has been removed but eating them can still be fatal. About 100 diners die each year after eating puffer fish. On April 23, 1996 a 23 year-old man ate a piece of puffer fish about the size of a quarter. Ten to 15 minutes later he felt tingling in his mouth and lips, followed by dizziness, fatigue, headache, difficulty speaking, tightness in his upper chest, shaking, nausea and vomiting. He collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.

TNHC - Texas Freshwater Fishes Index
Images, Maps and Information
This is a taxonomically structured index to TNHC Fish WWW images, distribution maps, and general information on freshwater fishes of Texas. For K-12 educational tools, see the Fishes of Texas page. This list is comprised of the entire list of North American Freshwater Fishes of Mayden, R.L. et al. (with footnotes plus additional taxa listed by Williams, J.E. et al. . Our thanks to the primary authors of each for allowing us to use these lists as the basis for this index. Scientific and common names follow Mayden et al. , except for some (mostly subspecies) found only in Williams et al . Only native North American freshwater species are included here. Species described subsequent to Mayden et al. 1992 will be added as we obtain images or other information. For information on exotics see the NBS Nonindigenous Fish Database Links lead to fish photographs (P) distribution maps (M) abstracts of biology/systematics/ecology (A) , and assorted other textual information (OTX) held by BOTH TNHC and Desert Fishes Council , and files on other servers (lower case links - e.g. xtx). Anatomy Black Bass Catfish Gar Name/Photo List Non-Native Fish Other Panfish Pickerels Stripers Suckers Threatened Florida has 3 million acres of freshwater lakes and 12,000 miles of streams and rivers. From those waters over 250 different species of freshwater fishes have been collected. This includes several rather rare native fishes and 73 species of non-native fishes (fish that come from outside of the United States and would not have been found in Florida if it were not for man's intervention). The fish species that most people tend to think about are the larger fish that are used for recreation or food. Of those, the 33 most popular are part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) "Big Catch" program and most are described in detail in this section of our web site (click the group you want to learn about in the table above, or i f you aren't certain of the group in which to find a fish you can pick it from the common names list) . There is also a poster (small pdf version available for download) that illustrates these fishes and is available for schools and fishing-related businesses that will publicly display it. A separate brochure is available to identify some of Florida's common exotic fishes (

Freshwater Drum Facts:
Scientific name: Aplodinotus grunniens Habitat: Deep pools of rivers and in Lake Erie with clear water and clean bottoms. Adult body weight: 1 - 17 lbs.; 36 lbs., maximum Adult body length: 12 - 30 inches Spawning period: April - May Young per year: 100,000 - 500,000 eggs Life expectancy: Unknown; a drum in Minnesota was documented in 1949 as being 71 years old Typical foods: Snails, mollusks, crayfish, aquatic insects and small fishes. Range: Notes: The freshwater drum is a silver-gray color on the sides with a white stomach. It has large eyes, a very high back, with a long dorsal fin with 24 - 32 rays and a rounded caudal fin. It is sometimes confused with the carp , however the carp has barbels and a deeply forked tail. A unique skeletal feature of the drum are the ear bones, known as otoliths. These are large and round with an "L" on one of the flattened sides. People collect them on the water's edge and consider them as "lucky stones." These otoliths have been found at prehistoric Indian sites used perhaps for good luck charms or as decorations to prevent sickness.

Brief lesson on types of mussels found in rivers, lakes and streams, and their life cycle.
    http://www.menunkatuck.org/pages/mussels.html
Freshwater Mussels - Hitchhikers on Fish
Most of us are familiar with the edible blue mussels that cling to rocks in the ocean's intertidal zone, and also, perhaps, with the ribbed horse mussel imbedded in the mud of salt marsh estuaries. But, what about fresh water? Are mussels found in rivers, streams and lakes as well? They certainly are! About 300 species of freshwater mussels are found in North America - the greatest diversity of any continent. Twelve native species occur in Connecticut, six of which are listed as endangered, threatened or special concern in the state. Contrary to general perceptions that mussels are about as interesting as dead stones, these animals are truly fascinating. Belonging to the Phylum Mollusca, they are related to marine octopus and squid, but only mussels, their bivalve clam cousins, and snails (Gastropoda) possess freshwater species. Mussels are filter feeders, pumping up to 40 liters of water per hour through their bodies in their quest for oxygen and food. Mussels may live from a decade to over a century, depending on species and habitat conditions. Most fascinating is the fact that fish play a critical role in a mussel's life cycle. Life begins when sperm, expelled by male mussels, is siphoned into a female and fertilizes her eggs. After two to ten months of brooding in her gills, the eggs develop into tiny (0.05 to 0.50mm diameter, smaller than a period on this page), strange-looking larvae called glochidia (glah-KID-ee-ah). When mature, hundreds of thousands of glochidia are released into the water, where a few will find their way to the correct host fish and attach themselves to its gills, fins or body. The glochidia soon become grown over, or encased, by fish tissues, forming a cyst.

    Here Come The Fish
The Fish are coming! The Fish are coming!
Fish aren't just for your aquarium anymore, they are making a splash on the internet. Fish are elbowing out hamsters (ie: hamsterdance.com) and other critters for their fair share of the internet traffic. If you need a little entertainment, or are looking for more visual information then you get in those dry old text books, look no further.. it's right here. Honkworm
The best of the fish funnies has to be the extremely well done animations by Honkworm International. These Real audio clips are guaranteed to make you laugh. Someone not only has a wicked sense of humor, but is very talented artistically as well. The offerings range from a talk show interview (aka:Larry King) to a pair of fish shooting the breeze at a bar, to the queen mum fish herself talking to a fireman. There are nearly a dozen clips available, and more come out regularly. You'll need RealPlayer and at least a 28.8Kbps Internet connection to view them (the links for the clips are at the end of this feature). Honkworm has become so popular that they are even spawning fan clubs in their honor (sounds fishy to me!).
