Buildings destroyed by the earthquake in Adana. In the aftermath of an earthquake and floods in Asia, and as the threat of un-controllable wildfires increases in Brazil, the Bank recently moved forward with a number of emergency projects. This week, the Bank approved two emergency projects to help countries grappling with the consequences of weather-related emergencies. (The Bank has offered assistance to Bangladesh and China in the wake of the devastating 1998 floods.) This past spring, the northwestern and eastern parts of Turkey were inundated by heavy rains that caused severe flooding and landslides. Twenty people died. Bridges, roads, houses, schools and other infrastructure suffered major damage. Access to hundreds of villages was entirely cut off or extremely difficult. The farm economy suffered a heavy blow as livestock died and crops and irrigation systems were destroyed. It was possibly the worst flooding in 500 years, and certainly in the last century.

  • Smoke alarms save lives. Install a smoke alarm outside each sleeping area and on each additional level of your home. If people sleep with doors closed, install smoke alarms inside sleeping areas, too. Use the test button to check each smoke alarm once a month. When necessary, replace batteries immediately. Replace all batteries at least once a year. Vacuum away cobwebs and dust from your smoke alarms monthly. Smoke alarms become less sensitive over time. Replace your smoke alarms every ten years. Consider having one or more working fire extinguishers in your home. Get training from the fire department in how to use them. Consider installing an automatic fire sprinkler system in your home.
Plan Your Escape Routes
  • Determine at least two ways to escape from every room of your home. Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second or third floor. Learn how to use them and store them near the window. Select a location outside your home where everyone would meet after escaping.

Fires and Forest Fires
Fires claim the lives of 4,500 people per year and decimate millions of acres of invaluable heritage land. Fires have also cost an average of $9 billion every year for the periods between 1990-2000. Fire problems vary from region to region in the United States. This is often the result of climate, poverty, education, demographics, and other causal factors. Human negligence or criminality is responsible for over half of the total surface wiped out by fire in North America. An estimated 75,000 incendiary or suspicious structure fires resulted in 505 civilian deaths and $1.3 billion in property damage. The other half is mostly due to lightings or other incidence.
Being prepared:
Government and local authorities have seriously responded to not only forest fire threats, but to the fire threat in general which is increasingly present due to global warming effects. One aspect of the government response has been strong prevention and educational campaigns on various web sites, television channels and on the radio. The main source of information on prevention can be found on the

Five Fire Disasters - The Final Reports
T he United States Forest Service and the American States report more than 100,000 fires every year. As you read this, there are probably several small wildfires burning somewhere in the country.
Possibly the largest wildfire occurred in October 1825, burning from Maine through New Brunswick, Canada. A group of loggers ignited a fire in a drought area that soon burned out of their control. The fire burned 3 million acres of forest and killed more than 160 people.
The most devastating fire in U.S history in terms of human lives and property lost was in Peshtigo, Wisconsin

Fire Prevention
Wildland fires usually start when loggers are cutting down trees and their chain saw makes a spark and it lands in a pile of brush and lights the brush. How to prevent fires is to stay away from electrical appliances, light in nonflammable container or concrete, remove all tree limbs around area, and build fires away from all trees, bushes and all other objects that can catch on fire. The way to put out a fire is to either cool it, take out the wood or other thing used as fuel, or use a ABC fire extinguisher. The A stands for pull ring on extinguisher. B is aim at base of fire. C is keep spraying until fire stops. The fire triangle which is what a fire is made of which is fuel, oxygen, and heat. The best way to get rid of what the fire is burning (fuel). How to get rid of a small fire in a pan or skillet is to put the lid on and that takes away the oxygen and puts out the fire. To get rid of the heat is to use cold water or in a pan 5 ice cubes will work for a small grease fire.

Abstract:

This book for earth science students uses dramatic descriptions of natural disasters to introduce eight units covering fires, floods, volcanoes, earthquakes, blizzards, tornadoes, hurricanes, and droughts. Each unit begins with an account of a famous disaster, followed by short, easy readings that provide information about the causes of such disasters and ways to predict, control, and prepare for them. Natural disasters described in the book include the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, hurricane Camille, the strongest ever to strike the United States, and the Good Friday Earthquake that occurred in 1964 in Anchorage, Alaska. The readings are followed by review sheets of factual recall, comprehension, and application questions. Also included are teacher sections with vocabulary lists, answer keys, and additional information pertaining to student readings. A glossary is provided at the end of each unit. NEWS For immediate use Dec.11, 2001 No. 637 Like storm clouds, natural disasters carry a silver lining, biologist says By DAVID WILLIAMSON UNC News Services CHAPEL HILL Humans usually think of forest fires, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes as unmitigated disasters, but such upheavals also do much good, even if most of the good is under-appreciated, a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill biologist says in his book "The Silver Lining." Subtitled "The Benefits of Natural Disasters," the new book details how storms, volcanoes, earthquakes, floods and other apparently catastrophic events renew life and boost diversity in ecosystems throughout the world, making them better for people and other species. "Optimists claim that every cloud has a silver lining," said Dr. Seth R. Reice, an associate professor of biology specializing in the plant and animal life of streams. "I go even further. Every tornado’s funnel cloud, every forest fire’s billowing cloud of smoke, indeed every disturbance, has tremendous benefits to the ecosystem it impacts. This is the real silver lining." Princeton University Press recently published the 240-page volume, which grew out of an article Reice wrote for American Scientist magazine. The biologist wrote it not for scholars, but "for ordinary people with an interest in nature."
