" Requests These characters are to be checked in logs for numerous reasons, the first being that these characters are used to append data to files. Example 1: #echo "your hax0red h0 h0" >> /etc/motd (This shows a request to write the information into this file.) An attacker may simply use a request like this to deface your website. The famous RDS exploit by rain.forest.puppy was often used by attackers to echo information into the websites main page. Check attrition.org and search for hacked websites with plain white pages with no formatting for an example. Example 2: http://host/something.php= Hi%20mom%20I'm%20Bold! This request shows a cross site server scripting attack example. You will notice the html tags use the " " characters. While this type of attack won't grant an attacker system access, it could be used to fool people into thinking that certain information on a website is valid. (Of course they would need to visit the link the attacker wants them to. The request may be masked by encoding the characters in hex so as not to be so obvious.) "!" Requests This character is often used in SSI(Server Side Include) attacks. These attacks may allow an attacker to have similar results as cross site scripting exploitation does if the attacker fools a user into clicking on a link. Below is an example. http://host1/something.php= This is an example of what an attacker may do. This is basically including a file from host2 and making it appear to be coming from host1. (Of course they would need to visit the link the attacker wants them to. The request may be masked by encoding the characters in hex so as not to be so obvious) It also may allow him to execute commands on your system with the privileges of your web server user. Below is an example. http://host/something.php=

http://www.forensic-evidence.com/site/Behv_Evid/BeE00005_1.html
Updated July 2, 2000 Assumption: A person who has committed a crime has the details of that crime stored in his memory. What if there were to be discovered a method whereby the details stored in the brain could be retrieved....But can this be done?
Dr. Lawrence A. Farwell, along with several other researchers, founded a human brain research laboratory after Dr. Farwell postulated that, indeed, information stored in the brain can be revealed "with extremely high accuracy" by Farwell's brain-wave response measurement using a multifaceted electroencephalographic response. If we find the "guilty knowledge" stored in a person's brain, what do we have? Is this an Orwellian crime fighting tool? Perhaps all we have to do is drag suspects in, put them on the EEG machine and read their memory? Dr. Farwell suggests use of the term "Orwellian" is misplaced since Orwell's 1984 described a society in which innocent people were constantly in fear of an extremely controlling government that did not value the truth. His "brain fingerprinting" helps to eliminate this kind of fear and oppression, he suggests. Also, one cannot "drag suspects in" to test them because it is physically impossible to test someone who resists the test. According to Dr. Farwell, brain-wave data can be obtained only if a person sits reasonably still and looks at the computer screen. Is it "science"? Is this just another polygraph? We do not have the answers. However, with permission of its inventor, Dr. Lawrence A. Farwell, we are printing a

Abstract:
This paper presents an online system that provides reliable search results using modest resources and scales up to data sets of the order of a million documents. Our system provides a practical compromise between storage requirements, immunity to noise introduced by document conversion and security needs for plagiarism applications. We present both quantitative analysis and empirical results to argue that our design is feasible and effective. A web-based prototype system is accessible via the URL http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/user/nch/www/koala.html

http://www.eti-geochemistry.com/
Exploration Technologies, Inc. (ETI) provides innovative geochemical services that are applicable to both the exploration and environmental industries. ETI's geochemical techniques are employed in the petroleum industry to reduce exploration risk and utilized in environmental assessments for accurate and cost-effective site characterizations. EXPLORATION GEOCHEMISTRY
Petroleum exploration surface geochemical surveys can be used to map the light hydrocarbons expressed through microseeps from active petroleum and natural gas reservoirs at depth. The maps, developed from the survey, serve as a guide to identifying prospective areas in both frontier and mature basins. The light hydrocarbons, when surveyed, analyzed and mapped, using ETI's proven techniques and technology, produce a graphic, geochemical picture of the source rock below. This picture shows whether or not a given area contains petroleum source rocks; whether the area is more oil or gas prone; and finally, whether or not the gas is over cooked and non-productive, or the oil too heavy to produce by drilling alone.
Such studies can greatly reduce the area to be searched; helping to focus more expensive exploration techniques, such as 3D geophysical surveys, on those portions of the basin most likely to contain petroleum accumulations and potential reservoirs.

fingerprinting. Grades 4—8. Even with sophisticated DNA testing and other identificationtechniques, fingerprinting remains an intriguing and reliable method.
http://www.lhsgems.org/GEM180.html
Fingerprinting Written by Jeremy John Ahouse and Jacqueline Barber We've all got 'em, and yet they distinguish us from one another so that fingerprints were sometimes all that kept Joe out of prison for the theft Tom committed. Even with sophisticated DNA testing and other identification techniques, fingerprinting remains an intriguing and reliable method. Students love the ideaand that's the inspiration for this guide.
In these "fingers-on" activities, students explore the similarities and variations of fingerprints. They take their own fingerprints (using pencil and transparent tape), devise their own classification categories, and apply their classification skills to solve a crime. The mystery scenario, Who Robbed the Safe?, includes plot and character sketches; we also encourage teachers to create characters and plots to develop their own mysteries. Makes a good "partner in crime" to Crime Lab Chemistry and an excellent preparatory activity for Mystery Festival

56. AFLP Studies In Avian Population Genetic Structure

All models are wrong; some are simply less wrong than others.
Welcome!
T his site is dedicated to the advancement of fine-scale population-level genetic analyses in natural populations, especially birds. My primary research interests concern the development of new molecular (especially AFLP) and analytical techniques to characterize genetic variation in spatially structured populations of lekking Neotropical birds. Although I am most interested in how dispersal barriers affect the genetic composition of White-bearded Manakins (family Pipridae) and various hummingbirds (family Trochilidae), I share some time investigating genetic processes in Combtooth Blennies (family Blenniidae) and Drosophila melanogaster . My motivation in creating this site was to provide a resource that would make available many of the protocols and tools I developed for my dissertation research. Although most of the information contained herein is referenced primarily to birds, I hope that other investigators will find this information useful in their own research. UPDATE!

I very much agree. The test determines (to an unknown degree of
reliability) that the displayed item is "recognized" or "familiar". But
much depends on the way in which it is applied or interpreted. And
the show did specify that a witness to a crime would likely have the
same recognition to specific details as the perpetrator. lt is also

Biometrics Breaks Into Prisons

03:00 AM Aug. 21, 1999 PT Guards in Florida's Sarasota County Jail can tell which inmates should be released just by the look in their eyes. Since last year, the jail has used a high-tech system that scans people's retinas to determine their identity. The system, made by Iriscan Inc. , has already caught two cons trying to escape by posing as other prisoners up for release; it has also proved that three people brought in on warrants who insisted the cops had the wrong guy really were the wanted men.

Biometric technologies use body parts or behaviors, from voice prints to hand geometry, to identify individuals. In use for over a decade at top-security government institutions, biometrics are spilling rapidly into other markets, driven by falling prices and growing public acceptance.
