Nmap ("Network Mapper") is an open source utility for network exploration or security auditing. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, although it works fine against single hosts. Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (ports) they are offering, what operating system (and OS version) they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. Nmap runs on most types of computers, and both console and graphical versions are available. Nmap is free software, available with full source code under the terms of the GNU GPL. Nmap is ...
  • Flexible : Supports dozens of advanced techniques for mapping out networks filled with IP filters, firewalls, routers, and other obstacles. This includes many port scanning OS detection , pings sweeps, and more. See the documentation page
  • Powerful : Nmap has been used to scan huge networks of literally hundreds of thousands of machines.

from the truth-or-dare dept. artointc pointed us to 'Brai n fingerprints' as Defense? , an article about a high-tech polygraph used recently in a murder trial. Here's an excerpt: It's the first time someone has tried to enter into evidence the results of a test created by an Iowa psychiatrist, Dr. Lawrence Farwell. Farwell, who calls his technology "brain fingerprinting," claims that it can detect memories stored in the human brain even if the subject doesn't want to recall them. A hearing this week at the Pottawattamie County Courthouse in Council Bluffs, Iowa, will be the first legal test for the technology. Prosecutors are fighting the attempt to enter new evidence in a 1978 murder conviction, including the results of a brain fingerprinting test. (This item was actually submitted back on November 16, but I've fallen a bit behind on reviewing submissions due to the Thanksgiving holiday, among other things. Hopefully we'll be caught up soon!)

Fingerprinting - an Emerging Technology
by Debbie Salter dsalter@nmsu.edu Engineering Technology 357 New Mexico State University Over the past few years, as society has grown, the crime rate has also increased. Politicians, law enforcement personnel, criminal justice experts, and numerous other people have not only tried to explain the cause for this increase but also have tried to find ways to combat this problem. One way that experts have begun to combat this problem is through automated fingerprint identification technology. BACKGROUND In the United States, the first systematic and official use of fingerprints for personal identification was adopted by the New York City Civil Service Commission in 1901. The method was used for classification of civil service applications. In 1924, the fingerprint records of the Bureau of Investigation and Leavenworth Prision were merged to form the nucleus of the identification records of the new Federal Bureau of Investigation. Presently, the FBI has the largest collection of fingerprints in the world. [1] FINGERPRINT IDENTIFICATION IS BASED ON THREE KEY PRINCIPLES: A fingerprint is an individual characteristic;

DNA Fingerprints, RFLPs, Slot Blots these are all variants of the poweful new technology that has revolutionized forensic science: DNA testing. From identifying the remains of American soldiers, to deciding paternity cases, to elminating and often convicting criminal suspects, DNA testing has become a powerful new weapon in the lawyer's arsenal. First developed in England in 1985, DNA testing takes advantage of the fact that, with the exception of identical twins, the genetic material DNA of each person is unique. When the National Research Council said in a 1992 study that DNA testing was a reliable method to identify criminal suspects, the technology rapidly entered the mainstream court system. Today, it is hard to pick up a daily paper and not find an article reporting on the use of DNA testing in a civil or criminal court case. The two animated tutorials below review the science and applications of DNA testing. To view each, simply click on the tutorial's link, and a new window will open on your screen.

Last Modified: 04 March, 2002 One of the challenges of network security is learning about the bad guys. To understand your threats and better protect against them, you have to Know Your Enemy . Passive Fingerprinting is a method to learn more about the enemy, without them knowing it. Specifically, you can determine the operating system and other characteristics of the remote host using nothing more then sniffer traces. Though not 100% accurate, you can get surprisingly good results. The subterrain crew has developed siphon , a passive network and system mapping and OS fingerprinting tool. Also, Michael Zalewski (Poland's finest) and Bill Stearns are maintaining . Both of these tools demonstrate the functionality we are about to discuss. Fingerprinting
Traditionally, Operating System fingerprinting has been done using active tools, such as queso or nmap. These tools operate on the principle that every operating system's IP stack has its own idiosyncrasies. Specifically, each operating system responds differently to a variety of malformed packets. All one has to do is build a database on how different operating systems respond to different packets. Then, to determine the operating system of a remote host, send it a variety of malformed packets, determine how it responds, then compare these responses to a database. Fyodor's nmap is tool of choice when using this methodology. He has also written a

Genetic fingerprinting technique helps identify E. coli bacteria
October 5, 1998
Web posted at: 10:49 p.m. EDT (0249 GMT) ATLANTA (CNN) Scientists have developed a genetic fingerprinting process that helps public officials detect different strains of the potentially deadly E. coli bacteria. E. coli is a bacteria normally found in all humans, but certain strains, such as 0157:H7, carry a toxin. The cutting edge technology is called Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE), which relies on genetic fingerprinting to determine if different samples of E. coli are related. E. coli bacteria from victims of an outbreak are cultured to increase their numbers. The bacteria's DNA is chemically cut into small pieces, which are separated according to size. A fluorescent dye illuminates the DNA under ultraviolet light, allowing scientists to compare different samples.

How Reliable Is Ballistic Fingerprinting? Friday, October 18, 2002
By Steven Milloy
The sniper spree in the Washington, D.C., area has spawned calls for "ballistic fingerprinting" of firearms.
OAS_AD('Middle'); Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., announced he would introduce legislation for a national program. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence told The Washington Post that ballistic fingerprinting would have "solved this crime after the first shooting." Maryland and New York already require ballistic fingerprinting. So far it hasn't helped convict a single criminal in Maryland despite "fingerprinting" 17,000 guns sold since January 2000. New York hasn't had success either. And there isn't likely to be success any time soon, according to the study. The report included the test firing of more than 2,000 rounds from 790 pistols. When cartridges from the same manufacturer were test-fired and compared, computer matching failed 38 percent of the time. With cartridges from different manufacturers, computer matching failed 62 percent of the time. "Automated computer matching systems do not provide conclusive results" requiring that "potential candidates be manually reviewed," said the experts.

I) Molecular Microbiology of Candida albicans
The yeast C. albicans is present on most humans as a harmless commensal organism. Thousands of yeast cells can be present in an individal, mostly in the gastrointestinal tract, without any ill effect. However C. albicans is also also the major fungal pathogen of humans. Infections can be localised, such as vaginal infections and oral infections, which cause a considerable degree of discomfort. In some patient groups, whose defence system is severely compromised (prematurely born infants, leukemics and burn patients), the yeast can turn into a deadly pathogen causing systemic infections- up to 50% of the patients infected die as a result. The incidence of such infections is increasing rapidly, especially in hospitalised patients. In New Zealand, such infections are now eight times more frequent than they were 9 years ago.Our reservoir of anti- Candida drugs is very limited, and these agents can have severe side effects. Development of new strategies for the prevention and treatment of candidiasis is therefore probably the most important challenge to be faced by medical mycology today.One of the prerequisites to developing such strategies is the knowledge of how

In response, state officials created the Lone Star System, which requires applicants to provide fingerprints to receive benefits. The system was designed to prevent people from signing up for food stamps or the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program more than once, officials said. "Once we build this database, if someone were to try to obtain duplicate benefits or bilk the system, they'd be discovered," said Human Services spokesman Michael Mahoney.
