Asian-American Candidates Asian-American Issues Key Contests ... San Jose Mercury News : "Extending rights won by Wen Ho Lee,"
Cecilia Lee Chang, founder of WenHoLee.org, has formed Justice for New Americans. The Fremont human relations commissioner is taking
her experience fighting for the rights of Wen Ho Lee, the wrongly accused scientist, to the people. The new group plans to educate the public about how and why new Americans can easily be targeted as scapegoats under the guise of national security. And it plans to take some cases to court.
This struggle for equal justice is a battle that Chinese-Americans have fought since the 19th century.
In earlier times, discrimination against Chinese-Americans was direct
and ugly. They could not own land. They could not attend public schools.
They could not testify against whites in court. They could not run for public office.
The documentary ``Ancestors in the Americas,'' by independent
filmmaker Loni Ding, tells the story of the early Chinese-Americans' legal struggles.
``It was natural for them to ante up a portion of their earnings to fight these discriminatory laws,'' the documentary says. ``They hired seasoned lawyers and challenged almost every law or court case enacted against them, sometimes with great success.

GOLDSEA ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES Is Seattle a Haven for Asian Americans? he Seattle-Bellevue-Everett area is only 11th largest in the size of its Asian American population (285,000, or about 11.4% of the area's 2.5 million), but it claims one of the oldest and richest slices of Asian American history. Its Chinatown was home to America's first Asian-owned manufacturing business, the Wa Chong Co. The company produced, among other things, a very fine grade of opium, some of which was probably exported to China with the U.S. government's blessings.
Best city for AA?
Since its birth in 1910 Seattle's atmospheric International District was settled by generations of Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and Vietnamese immigrants. In the late 70s the aging District began enjoying a rebirth into its modern incarnation thanks to Asian American activism in seeking to preserve it as a historical and cultural site. More recently an influx of trendy young AA professionals, entrepreneurs and artists has helped transform it into a vibrant part of downtown Seattle's cultural and night life. The District hosts the Northwest Asian American Theater Company and the Wing Luke Asian American Museum, named after a Chinese American elected to the Seattle City Council in 1965.
On the far end of the Seattle area's cultural spectrum is lush, ultra-modern Bellevue, one of the nation's most affluent communities. Asians make up 20.3% of the students of the Bellevue School District, thrice the 7.3% concentration in the general population of Washington state. This points up the fact that Seattle hosts one of the nation's best established Asian populations. Unlike some urban areas dominated by one or two Asian nationalities, Seattle's AA population is highly diversified, comprising the nations 7th largest Japanese (31,000), the 8th largest Vietnamese (44,000), 9th largest Corean (38,000), and the 11th largest Chinese (58,000) and Filipino (53,000) communities.

FACT 2002: ReDefining the Image of the Filipino American by Kamillah Ong The weekend of November 8, 9, and 10 marked the tenth anniversary of the Filipino Americans Coming Together Conference (FACT) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. For three days, UIUC provided an open forum and gathering place for Filipino American students and representatives of the greater Filipino American community from across the country. Each year, FACT strives to help Filipino Americans gain a better understanding of their history and culture while encouraging them to take confident steps into the future. The conference featured workshops focusing on important Filipino American issues today, a variety show, and an afterset. DePaul University’s Asian Cultural Exchange and Delta Phi Lambda, an Asian-Interest Sorority each sent delegates to the conference. UIUC’s Philippine Student Association sponsored the conference. Representatives from UIC’s Filipinos in Alliance attended the conference as well as many other Filipino American organizations from around the Midwest, including Ohio State University, Purdue University, University of Chicago, Illinois State University, and Northwestern University. This year, the FACT Conference theme was “ReDefine.” The theme encouraged Filipino and Asian Americans alike to acknowledge both their distant and recent pasts while incorporating this history into the present to emerge as a strong unified culture. Delegates at the conference kept this theme in mind throughout the weekend. First year Information Systems major Sean Lunjas said, “I attended FACT because I wanted to learn more about my heritage and learn more about myself as a person.”
