Jose M. Montano, Jr.
May 4, 2002
By Andrew Li-ren Wang
Montano As executive director of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA), Jose Montano encourages the civic and political empowerment of Filipino Americans, while convincing the political establishment of the importance and relevance of Filipino American issues.
Mr. Montano was born in 1968 during his father's tenure as a White House steward in the later years of the Johnson administration. As a child, he moved with his family to Norfolk, Virginia, the center of a sizable Filipino American population. After high school, Mr. Montano took a non-traditional path in earning a degree in political science from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., working along the way to fund his education. After graduation in 2000, he was instrumental to the success of a NaFFAA voter registration drive aimed at registering Filipino Americans in the D.C. metropolitan area. In December 2000, he became the national executive director at NaFFAA's Washington office, taking over for Jon Melegrito.
Mr. Montano describes NaFFAA as both a clearinghouse for information and news regarding the Filipino American community and as an advocacy group for Filipinos and Filipino Americans. NaFFAA's goals include the following: promoting civic and political participation of Filipino Americans; increasing awareness of the economic, social, and cultural contributions of Filipino Americans to the United States; ensuring social justice, fair treatment, and equal rights for Filipino Americans; strengthening Filipino American communities; and eliminating prejudices, stereotypes, and discrimination against Filipino Americans.

    Asian Americans
Figure 5-1 shows the percent distribution of the Asian American and Pacific Islander population by ethnic subgroup, based on Census 2000 data. Data are given for Chinese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Pacific Islander ethnic groups. For Pacific Islanders, data are broken out for individuals of Native Hawaiian, Samoan, and Guamanian/Chamorro ethnicity. Pacific Islanders Unlike Asian Americans, most Pacific Islanders are not immigrants, but are descendants of the original inhabitants of land claimed by the United States. Thus, Pacific Islanders share the history of American Indians and Alaska Natives, whose lives dramatically changed upon contact with various European explorers. In the late 1760s, for example, Captain James Cook and his crew arrived in Hawaii and brought with them formerly unknown diseases that devastated much of the indigenous population. By the late 1840s, after colonists had taken and redistributed the land in Hawaii, American missionaries and businessmen controlled most of the land and trade of these islands. A similar fate befell the Tongans. When Cook discovered the Tonga islands in 1773, English missionaries followed. Tonga became a British protectorate in 1900 and gained its independence in 1970.

Asian Americans enjoy an evening of food and fun
STEPHANIE STEENBOCK Collegian Asian American students, faculty, alumni and guests gathered Saturday night for an evening of food, fun and friendship. Asian cultural night was sponsored by the Asian American Students for Cultural Awareness as a part of Asian American Awareness Month. The evening began with a potluck dinner, which was a potpourri of Asian and American dishes. Betty Low, senior in management information systems and president of Asian American Students for Cultural Awareness, said she wanted to have the night to celebrate all of the backgrounds represented in Asian American culture. Vandy Paul, sophomore in computer science, said she organized the night because she thinks Asian Americans lose a lot of their background. "I think they lose touch with their culture," Paul said. The first performance of the night was by Namfone Lumdubwong, graduate student in food science, who performed two piano pieces from Taiwan. Ashley Souther, sophomore in political science and international studies, said he enjoyed watching the next part of the program, the fashion show with native Asian clothing. "It was cool to see the beautiful fabrics because it is so different from what we (Americans) wear," Souther said.

Young Asian-Americans flock to vocations rally in the Bronx By MAX PIZARRO Sister Kieunga Luong, F.M.M., grew up in Vietnam. One of nine children living in a war zone, she never heard anyone in her family say "I love you." But now, as a Franciscan Missionary of Mary, "I hear those words a lot," Sister Kieunga told a group of young people attending Sunday's Asian-American Vocation Rally at Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx. "I'm very happy to be with the sisters, and I want to share the joyfulness." Stories like Sister Kieunga's and others drove the spirit of the rally, attended by some 200 young Asian-Americans from cities as geographically diverse as New York, Boston and Denver. Chinese, Filipino and Korean Catholics made up the bulk of people in attendance, but there were also Indian, Indonesian and Vietnamese representatives and one person from Malaysia. Youth from four of New York's boroughs were there, and the onstage choir was made up of members of the archdiocesan Filipino Youth Apostolate. "It was really fun and I enjoyed it," said 17-year-old Elizabeth Chamakala, a parishioner of St. Catharine's in Pelham whose parents are from the south of India. "The rally showed me more options. I liked in particular the sharing of different experiences."

Jailing of scientist Lee is unfair, they claim; unity sought at rally
    June 7, 2000 BY MEI-LING HOPGOOD
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER Local Asian-American activists plan to grab picket signs Thursday and accuse the government of scapegoating Chinese American Dr. Wen Ho Lee. They have joined a national movement condemning the jailing of the scientist six months ago. Lee, a former Los Alamos scientist born in Taiwan and a U.S. citizen since 1974, has pleaded not guilty to charges he improperly transferred classified files in New Mexico from a secure computer to one that was not secure. Local activists also say they hope the noon protest at the McNamara Federal Building in Detroit might get them noticed in a city where civil rights issues are often portrayed as black or white It might even help to mobilize a somewhat fragmented Asian-American community. "It's not that we don't want to get together, it's that we don't know each other," said Marie Weng, 62, president of the Association of Chinese Americans, which has about 600 members. The Asian-American population in metro Detroit has grown 40-55 percent from 1989 to about 104,057 people two years ago, according to 1998 Census Bureau estimates, the last figures available.
