    San Francisco School Board, l905
In response to the challenge of changing demographics more than a century ago, the San Francisco School Board established a segregated Chinese Primary School for Chinese children to attend, including those who were American-born. By the turn-of-the century after Japanese immigrants had settled in the wake of Chinese exclusion, the School Board also applied the Chinese segregation policy to Japanese students. School superintendent, Aaron Altmann, advised the city's principals: "Any child that may apply for enrollment or at present attends your school who may be designated under the head of 'Mongolian' must be excluded, and in furtherance of this please direct them to apply at the Chinese School for enrollment." Throughout their history, Asian Americans have confronted a long legacy of exclusion and inequity in relation to school policies and practices, particularly during periods of changing demographics, economic recession, or war. In spite of historic, linguistic differences, distinct Asian nationalities have been grouped together and treated similarly in schools and in the larger society. The grouping of Asian Americans together, then, makes sense in light of historic links from the past to the present.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and Tobacco
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are persons of Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry whose origins are from China and Mongolia to the north, Indonesia to the south, the Indian subcontinent to the west, and the U.S.-related Pacific Islands to the east. The six largest subgroups of Asian Americans are from China, the Philippines, Japan, Asian India, Korea, and Vietnam. Hawaiians, Samoans, and Guamanians are the three largest Pacific Islander subgroups. Although Asian Americans reside across the country, approximately 66% live in California, Hawaii, Illinois, New York, and Texas. Approximately 75% of the Pacific Islanders population live in just two states – California and Hawaii. Asian American population nearly doubled in size from an estimated 3.5 million in 1980 to almost 7 million in 1990, while Pacific Islanders population grew by 41% between 1980 (259,566) and 1990 (365,024).

Asian Americans constitute over 6% of the total population of New Jersey, according to Census 2000 results. The new release contains population counts for detailed race groups, including 16 Asian American groups, as well as housing, age, and family characteristics for race groups from the Census 2000 short form. The Asian American Federation, a Census Bureau-designated Census Information Center based in New York City, analyzed the detailed Asian group data. The largest Asian American groups in New Jersey are Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, and Vietnamese Americans, respectively. Following the national trend, the Indian and Vietnamese American communities grew the fastest in New Jersey between 1990 and 2000, at rates over 100 percent each. Chinese, Korean, and Filipino Americans ranked third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in growth rate. Federation CIC analysis also discovered growing Pakistani and Taiwanese American communities in some areas of New Jersey, as well as small emerging pockets of Bangladeshi, Indonesian, Sri Lankan, and Thai Americans in various New Jersey cities.

"Bonus draws on contemporary insights of cultural studies while grounding its tendency toward idealism in a very material sense of power. His subjects are actors, not victims of narratives. He does an effective and sometimes elegant job of capturing their adjustment and resistance to being neither and both Filipino and American."
John Horton , Professor Emeritus of Sociology, UCLA The Filipino American population in the U.S. is expected to reach more than two million by the next century. Yet many Filipino Americans contend that years of formal and covert exclusion from mainstream political, social, and economic institutuions of the basis of their race have perpetuated racist stereotypes about them, ignored their colonial and immigration history, and prevented them from becoming fully recognized citizens of the nation. Locating Filipino Americans shows how Filipino Americans counter exclusion by actively engaging in alternative practices of community building.

The Diversity Factor
Filipino Americans are now the second largest group of Asian Americans as well as the second largest immigrant group in the United States. As reflected in this collection, their lives represent the diversity of the immigrant experience and their narratives are a way to understand ethnic identity and Filipino American history. Men and women, old and young, middle and working class, first and second generation, all openly discuss their changing sense of identity, the effects of generational and cultural differences on their families, and the role of community involvement in their lives. Pre- and post-1965 immigrants share their experiences, from the working students who came before WWII, to the manongs in the field, to the stewards and officers in the U.S. Navy, to the "brain drain" professionals, to the Filipinos born and raised in the United States.
