True History of the Kelly Gang
In a spectacular feat of literary ventriloquism, Peter Carey invites the outlaw Ned Kelly to tell his story. He summons the rollicking, unschooled, hugely colorful voice of Australia's best-known underdog for a bravura book-length performance. Selected Non-Fictions He is most widely read for his fiction, but this intelligently selected and magically translated collection of Borges' nonfiction demonstrates, among other things, the closeness of his two worlds, reality and invention. The Biographer's Tale British novelist A.S. Byatt is entranced with the idea of the literary scholar as detective.

Licks of Love : Short Stories and a Sequel, Rabbit Remembered
It is easy enough to grow blasé about John Updike. A serious mistake, of course, but understandable. After all, the beak-nosed virtuoso of American letters has been producing a substantial volume or two each year for more than four decades, alternating highly original fiction with super-sized collections of essays and occasional bursts of adroit and clever poetry. Undue Influence Claire Pitt, the extremely unreliable narrator of this novel, is a familiar Brook-ner heroine: an orphan who spends her free time on lonely walks through the streets of London, a hard-working woman whose job in a dusty secondhand bookshop buttresses her against ennui. Above all, she is unattached. Claire bleakly summarises: "I was free because nothing was required of me. I was therefore superfluous."

AOTW: Describe your editing process. Do you write and then go back to edit later, or do you revise a page until it is right, then proceed to the next page, and so on?
AOTW: Who is your "first reader" or "readers" when you finish your work? For those of you writing biographies, are there legal issues you have to deal with prior to publication?
