Me... My name is Kealalaina. I am now 31 years old and have had fibromyalgia for about 11 years. I have had my ups and downs with the disease...from being almost totally "couched" to being in what I call remission. Right now, I am in a "flare up". Wanna see what I look like on a good day? Go HERE I believe the best thing a person with any illness can do for themselves is to educate yourself. This page offers information and many links to help gather as much info as you can about fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain. The next best thing you can do is to talk to others with the same condition. Through doing this myself, I have found much comfort and alot of ideas that help to cope. You may chat with fellow FMer's here on my chat page or you will find a list of places to chat on the links page I hope this page will help patients and their families and friends find information and cope with these illnesses. Feel free to email me with ideas and suggestions for the page....or just to chat! Please do take the time to sign my guestbook . I would really appreciate it! Want to read about others who have visited my page who have FM?

familydoctor.org Home Health Topics Fibromyalgia and Exercise This handout is also available in Spanish. What is fibromyalgia? If I have fibromyalgia, what can I do to help myself feel better? What is fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia is a disorder that causes pain in your muscles and joints. It may also cause poor sleep, headaches, and stiffness or muscle aches. Stress or lack of sleep can make the symptoms of fibromyalgia worse. More women than men have fibromyalgia, but the disorder is commonit is seen in up to 5% of the population. However, it isn't life-threatening and it doesn't cause permanent damage. If I have fibromyalgia, what can I do to help myself feel better? One of the best things you can do if you have fibromyalgia is exercise. Begin with stretching exercises and gentle, low-impact activity, such as walking or bicycling. Start your exercise program slowly, because at the beginning, exercise may make your pain worse. Some muscle soreness is normal when you're starting to exercise, but sharp pain may be a sign that you have overworked your muscles. As you progress with exercise, it will become more comfortable for you. In order for exercise to help, you must do it regularly. The goal is to get started and keep going, to gain relief from pain and to improve sleep. Below are some exercises you might want to try:

Clinical surveys continue to indicate that routine orders for intramuscular injections of opioid "as needed" fail to relieve pain in about half of postoperative patients. Not all acute postoperative, procedural, or trauma-related pain can be eliminated, but several alternative approaches, when appropriately and attentively applied, prevent or relieve pain. The importance of effective pain management increases beyond patient satisfaction when additional benefits for the patient are realized, e.g. earlier mobilization, shortened hospital stay, and reduced costs. Patients have a right to treatment that includes prevention or adequate relief of pain.

THE HISTORY OF HOW IT HAPPENED
Back in 1840, dentists formed the American Society of Dental Surgeons. Their members were required to sign pledges that they would NOT use mercury in the fillings they placed. There were even cases in New York in 1848 where dentists were fined for malpractice for using mercury in their filling material. Mercury was referred to as "quicksilver" in North American and in Europe was called "quacksalver" Therefore a "quack" was someone who pretends to cure disease and "salve" was an application for wounds. The term "quack" was first applied to anyone using mercury to cure skin diseases, e.g. the skin lesions associated with tertiary syphilis. The skin rash would disappear, but the disease went deeper into the organs and the nervous system and the person died a very painful death. The term was then used against dentists using mercury for the same reason, - using a poisonous substance to "cure" or fix decay. Because of the internal feuds, a new dental organization was formed in 1859 – the American Dental Association (ADA). This body did NOT condemn the use of mercury, to the extreme now 140 years later; they try to crucify any dentist who tells his or her patients about the dangers of mercury! Many practitioners believe the ADA actually send undercover personnel into offices of practitioners who dare to speak the truth, to gather information against them and challenge their licenses.

    In Summary
    What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia syndrome is a common form of generalized muscular pain and fatigue. The name "fibromyalgia" means pain in the muscles and the fibrous connective tissues (the ligaments and tendons). This condition is referred to as a "syndrome" because it's a set of signs and symptoms that occur together. (A sign is what the physician finds on examination; a symptom is what a person reports to the doctor.) Fibromyalgia is especially confusing and often misunderstood because almost all it symptoms are also common in other conditions. In addition, it does not have a known cause. The name "fibromyalgia" has largely replaced the term "fibrositis," which was once used to describe this disorder. The "itis" means "inflammation" - a body process that can result in pain, swelling, warmth, redness, and stiffness. Early reports of this condition described inflammation in muscles. However, during the past 50 years investigators have proven that inflammation is not a significant part of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a form of "soft-tissue" or muscular rheumatism rather than "arthritis of a joint." The word "rheumatism" refers to pain and stiffness associated with arthritis and related disorders of the joints, muscles, and bones. Fibromyalgia mainly affects muscles and their attachments to bones. Therefore, although fibromyalgia may feel like a joint disease, it is not a true form of arthritis and does not cause deformities of the joints.

Is There A Cure For Fibromyalgia?
This topic is huge and requires the explanation of pain in virtually every body part and side effects thereof including fatigue and brain fog. For this reason this article will be a little longer than most to follow. I apologize for the fact that I will be very technical in some of my explanations, so that pain physicians may appreciate some of the material as well. I will also recommend that the readers look through the website to gain a general idea of some of the new pain theories. Some reference may be given to these topics.
    What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is not a new condition. There are many names for this condition given all around the world and over hundreds of years of medicine. There is a tremendous controversy over its existence, and even more over it’s criteria for diagnosis. I will be assuming its existence, and I will not be arguing the criteria for diagnosis in this forum. Fibromyalgia has been around as long as there have been animals and humans. It can affect any person on the planet and is associated with many "Injury Factors" .The complete condition is more common in women, but it is also common in men, and I have seen it even in children and young people. At a basic level, most people with fibromyalgia are suffering from diffuse muscle and tendon shortening, driven in part by multiple nerve compressions throughout the spine and limbs. Spinal origins from the neck, mid back and low back figure prominently in it’s source of pain. It seems deep spinal muscles cause deep nerve compressions and traction that cause further muscle problems in the spine, limbs and head. Pain can be directly from the muscles crushing a joint, or from pain referring into the joint from the spine. Typically both exist at the same time. Headaches can exist from referred pain from the neck but also from local muscle problems around the head.
