EDUCATIONAL STRATEGIES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME
Introduction
There are specific strategies to utilize in the education of individuals with Alcohol Related Birth Defects (ARBDs), including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), as well as other types of prenatal drug exposure. The strategies will need to be personalized and adapted over time for the best results for you and the children with whom you work who were prenatally exposed to drugs. The strategies presented can be utilized with children with FAS and other types of prenatal drug exposure. Often these children were not exposed to only one substance, but are multi-drug exposed. Working with these individuals requires TEAM WORK. There is no substitute for it. Bring all individuals who might be working with these children (teachers, administrators, secretaries, janitors, lunchroom and playground aides) into the discussions and trainings. Be sure to work closely with the family. These individuals are "high-maintenance" students. They require a great deal of time, effort, love, and understanding.
Working together as a team, with all members on the same page, will produce incredible results.

A Canadian victim assistance co-ordinator and a longtime foster parent offered the following insights into raising and educating children who suffer with fetal alcohol syndrome or fetal alcohol effects after reading the article FAS Victim Faces Murder Charges
The school year is rapidly drawing to a close. Teachers, parents and students are getting together to plan for next year and figure out how best to help Little Johnny and Little Suzie pull up their marks sufficiently to pass this one. Should be a simple process, right? Well, if you are parenting challenged children, it surely is not. "We don't like to label our kids." "Little Johnny could be doing so much better if only he'd apply himself." "Little Suzie keeps forgetting her books and course materials. I can't understand it. I told her so clearly what to bring." "What do you mean I need to re-teach Little Johnny these concepts? He himself told me just yesterday that he understood it quite well!"

    SYNOPSIS:
These documents will provide background information on FAS/FAE and the terminology used in describing this condition, but in layperson's language. This does not imply stupidity, but this is difficult to enough to understand, without having to decipher the difficult terms before you can begin to absorb the information. An illustration appears after the data on FAS. Some of the facial characteristics may be found on FAE children as well. Back to Directory SYNOPSIS:
    PERSONALITY AND LEARNING TRAITS
This document is a breakdown of the personality and learning traits of FAS/FAE children. Knowing what to expect in terms of how they learn and process information, as well as what other agendas may be in their brains can make a tremendous difference in the lesson that are planned. Not only that, but because of some of the traits , such as retreating and isolating themselves, teachers will be prepared and formulate a plan of action to address the issue. At first glance, most of these seem negative-it isn't so much negative as it is how they process what you say and how you say it. Remember, just because you know what you said, they might not.
