1920's Wedding Styles Cloche or Cap veils were de rigueur for the twenties, fitting over the entire head and then falling gracefully over the shoulders. Often made from net backed laces, they became more and more elaborate, some using the finest Lyon and Brussels lace. These were decorated with satin or velvet ribbon, metallic gimp and wax blossoms at the ears. The corners of this veil were rounded and as in the photo at left, made from unmistakable silk tulle as it fell straight to the floor with no body. This brides cap veil incorporated a large pouf at the back that was balanced by her simple daisy and crown trim. Her over the elbow opera gloves and her huge bouquet with traditional ribbon knots were cutting edge twenties style. Note the similarity between the following bride's silhouette, from the cut of her sleeve to her over the elbow gloves and single strand of pearls; the two brides are almost identical in style.
Headpieces in the roaring twenties became more and more elaborate in contrast to the simplistic appearance of the rather loose cut dresses of the period. The chemise dress appeared to go straight up and straight down and the focus of style went to their, er... heads. Veils became yards of dreamy silk tulle that was often photographed in a graceful gather at the Bride's feet. This bride's veil is rectangular cut, perfectly matching her lack of waistline typically associated with gowns of this decade.

Vintage News decades of fashion 1950s fashion The 1950s was the first new decade for a post war Britain, with new housing and new towns beginning to spring up around the country. Rationing ended in 1954 to the relief of the nation, after the heavily rationed late 1940s. With restrictions lifted it was sometime before the fashion industry was able to return to business as usual. Women were still wearing the utilitarian styled clothing hanging on from war torn Britain. However, in Paris the fashion house of Dior were lifting women's spirits and hopes with their ultra feminine haute couture designs, with hour glass silhouettes and designs using yards of rationed fabrics. These designs brought delight to western women and brought shouts of irresponsibility from governments 1950s The Look The look inspired by the Paris designs, soon filtered through to the high streets and the new shops catering for the feminine woman with this new silhouette to women nation wide. Everything about the new look was feminine and emphasised the figure.

1950 Fashion History In 1950 fashion history underwent something of a revolution. The austerity of the war years with rationing receded and utilitarian dress gave way to elegance. 1950 fashions affected lingerie greatly Dior dictated a slim trim silhouette and the world discovered longline girdles, corsets and corselettes - instant trimming of those lumps and bumps into a svelte figure ready for the tailored 1950 fashion look.
Full-Fashioned Stockings
The war years had seen the supply of nylon restricted to parachute making, so nylon in peacetime really made an impact. Every well-dressed woman would be hooking her corset suspender tabs to fine full-fashioned stockings. There were cuban heel stockings with the straight top to the stocking heel, and French or point heel stockings.

A Day in the Past
Freedom of the Flapper
The roaring '20s brings to mind Prohibition, The Crash of '29 and women in flapper dresses dancing the Charleston. Eighty years have made liquor legal, the stock market somewhat stable and the flapper dress an unwavering favorite for eveningwear. The spirit of the historic flapper dress is girlish and luxurious bedecked with sequins and beads. It's the perfect after-dark opportunity to show a little leg after hiding them under the pervasive floor length skirts of the season. To achieve the girl-woman form of the 1920's, a short loose corset was worn with brassieres. Of course the form was more achievable for slender women. There were still corsets, much lighter that the past ones, to help larger women achieve this. There is also the corset and bandeau that was popular during the jazz age. The two garments would produce a roll of fat, so suspenders were added to the bra to help pull down over the top of the corset belt. The next step was the corselette (an undergarment combining girdle and brassiere).

FASHION HISTORY IN TURKEY
Vural Gokcayli
Starting in his article as "I applaud the idealist ladies working at the Library of Works by Woman and the foundation of Information Center. Besides all kind of financial and moral difficulties, their war is an incredible event of civil organization; congratulations: I invite everybody to help." Vural Gokcayli is carrying out in detail the history of fashion in Turkey beginning from the period of Osman I. He says that "the Turkish people preserved until 1808 their costume in a conservative manner" and "Mahmut II and his mother Naksidil are the first to dress like Europeans" "When revolution took place in France, economics, politics and even costumes had changed with Napoleon. We also see its slight influence in the Ottoman Empire." He states that Mahmut II is the leader in this aspect and draws the attention on the development of the Law, the Constitution and Girl schools during this period: "with the opening of girl schools, the intellectual woman had met with Europe through reading." The development lasted during the periods of Ahmet III and Abdulmecit; it is stated in the article that women on excursion began to dress appropriate to fashion with trends starting at palaces together with the Tanzimat / Political Reforms securing some social and cultural rights to the Turkish woman. It is said that

Features Index San Francisco MetroActive Central Archives You've Come A Long Way, Baby! A century of fashion innovation, novelty and faux pas By Dara Colwell While fashion largely remains in the eye of the beholder, clothing has always served its purposebe it social, sexual, cultural or individual. Since man evolved from his naked-ape status (and because nudity is often perceived as a threat), he has cloaked himself in threads, accentuated this, minimized that, tucked those neatly away and managed to avoid sitting on cold surfaces unprepared. Now that we've arrived at the early 21st century, marked by a casual chic as disposable as our income, fashion will no doubt take new, unexpected turns. But one thing remains certain: Western fashion has gone through such rapid changes and bizarre extremes that looking back inevitably evokes morbid fascination. The 1920s was a decade notorious for scandalous changes in fashion, drinking habits and Mafia activity. It was the era of sheiks and shebas, smart debutantes smoking with abandon in public, and the streamlined, curveless figure. Skirts fell sordidly short, between the knee and mid-calf depending on the season, and formal clothes hardly differed from casual ones. Clothing was straight, hairstyles were tomboyishly short and fashion was much less restrictive, giving both sexes ample room to run when the cops crashed the local speakeasy. Or the Mafia. Or the FBI. You get the picture, right, doll? Let's skip to the bouncy and bubbly '50s (the previous two decades everyone dressed like their parents), a time when button-through cardigan twin-sets were all the rage. Full-length, shawl-collared coats and furs draped glamorously across the shoulders of starlets. Women waltzed into rooms, capturing male attention, in full, wide skirts layered in taffeta, while men, who surprisingly still dressed like their fathers, wore casual sweaters. It was the Cold War decade and the accompanying knitwear was seemingly appropriate: chunky wool sweaters, mohair sweaters and cable sweaters. Turtle and polo necks came later. Of course there were also the incredibly engineered bullet bras, which will likely cause us to mix metaphors, so we'll mention them only in passing.
