Mevagissey Gig Rowing Club, originally named as Mevagissey Rowing Club, was formed in 1988. Although the sport of gig racing has been competitively raced in Newquay and the Isles of Scilly since the early 1960's, it was not until the early 1980's that it started becoming popular around Cornwall. In the year of 1985, a man called David Foard from Mevagissey was inspired by this fast-growing sport and had a revolutionary idea to form a gig club in Mevagissey. A small group was formed to carry out a feasibility study into the interest and practicality of a gig for Mevagissey......After the feasibility study was carried out, a decision was taken that it would be of benefit and advantage to Mevagissey for a gig club to be formed. Mevagissey Gig Club was officially formed on 12th August 1987 with the officials comprising as:-
  • Chairman - David Foard Secretary - Sue Lakeman Treasurer - Geoff Hocking Committee - 11 other members
With the help of a grant and a loan from the National Sports Council, Mevagissey's first gig was ordered to be constructed by local boat builders Tom Dudley and Peter Foard, supporting the local boat building economy. Named "Endeavour", she was launched from Mevagissey harbour on the evening of Saturday 16th April 1988 by former Cornwall and England International Rugby player, Richard Sharp of the National Sports Council.

The first known mention of the faroe islands in Bahá'í history is from texts writtenin 1916/17 by Abdu'lBahá and known as Tablets of the Divine Plan .

NEW!
The Faroe Islands, in the North Atlantic, are the home of a small Nordic nation which has a very distinctive and heart warming culture. Made up of eighteen islands, sixteen of which are inhabited, the Faroes lie midway between the northernmost Scottish Islands and Iceland. The population of 47 thousand people are spread among about 100 villages and small towns. The main language is Faroese (close to the original old Viking language). The people are also able to speak Danish and many of them other languages too, including English. Faroese was not written down until the last century and the language, together with the history, has been passed down through the centuries in a remarkable oral tradition in which the sagas are chanted in ring dances - a tradition that is still alive and well today. The first known mention of the Faroe Islands in Bahá'í history is from texts written in 1916/17 by Abdu'l-Bahá and known as "Tablets of the Divine Plan". The first Bahá'í to live in Faroes was Eskil Ljungberg from Sweden. He arrived in 1953 and stayed for the rest of his life. He died in Tórshavn (the capital of Faroes) in 1985 at the age of 98.
Eskil Ljungberg
on his 98th birthday The Faroe Islands are very rugged and beautiful and are a haven for innumerable sea birds. The islands jut out of the North Atlantic defying the elements and, although this is where the first Baha'i conference of the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Europe took place (in 1974), the climate is surprisingly mild due to the gulf stream. The land is very green and the houses very colourful (no skyscrapers). There are few trees, lots of sheep, modern shopping centres, excellent sports facilities, plenty of fresh unpolluted air, peace and tranquillity. For those who like to experience nature in all its moods, the clear air and sunshine is interspersed with intermittent rain, fog and the occasional storm :) . The people are kindhearted and friendly.

Introduction [top]
Greenland has an area of around 2.2 million km , making it the largest island in the world. The inland ice, which covers approximately 1.8 million km , is the second largest ice cap in the world. In some places, the ice is up to 3.5 km thick. The northernmost point of the island, Cape Morris Jesup, is the northernmost land area in the world and is situated c. 730 km from the North Pole. The southern point, Cape Farewell, is located at the same latitude as the Nordic capitals Oslo and Helsinki. Greenland and the Faroes are part of the kingdom of Denmark, but are largely self-governing. Legislation formally comes under the Danish Folketing which includes two representatives from Greenland, but in practical terms the Greenland Landsting The majority of the population in Greenland were born on the island. Those who are not local mostly come from Denmark, but the Danish share of the population has been reduced since the end of the 1980s. In 1960, approximately 42% of the population lived in settlements. Many have since moved to the towns, however, leaving only 19% in the settlements in 1997. More than 2/3 of the population live on the west coast in the Disco Bay area and the central region; with close to 13,000 inhabitants, the capital Nuuk is by far the largest town in Greenland.
